Technically perfect. This is the way I was taught to execute oi tsuki and the way I practiced it for many years. But I have come round to the conclusion that it is wrong. You cannot pull of this version of oi tsuki in freeplay. In fact, many shotokan practitioners abandoned oi tsuki in the 70s because it is too slow when done as depicted here, and they would get clocked coming in. There are basically two things that have to be changed. First, the fist must hit the target before the stepping foot hits the ground. Look at old videos of Joe Lewis and Frank Brennan doing oi tsuki this way and getting good hits. Second, you should extend the shoulders with the punch rather than keeping it square. This gives added power to the blow. It is rather hard to execute oi tsuki as I have described it to the air, but try it on a heavy bag. You'll see then. It is a very powerful and fast blow. I would like to say that I figured this stuff out for myself. But I was taught the more practical method of executing oi tsuki by Sensei Jack Morris who learned it from Joe Lewis.

Yes! Your observations are spot on. Your first point properly describes oizuki as a one motion attack, the essence of any effective technique. Per your second point, when power extends freely through opponent in oizuki, final position is hanmi, not square. Final positions for oizuki and gyakuzuki are not the same.

When I started in 1972 .I was in awe of the high grade belts getting that sound in blocks and punches.around 1974 I saved up and bought a 15oz Tokaido Gi. I think it was £50 when a starter Gi was about £10. I soon developed that crack .I trained for 8 years and injury forced me to give it up .Yet at age 82 I can still generate that crack wearing a jacket .😊PS. I still have that Gi.But it no longer fits me.I still have and use my floor standing makiwara post. Just in case I get mugged .I need to keep my ( freight train punch ) Graded by Keinosuke Enoeda .R.I.P

Hip vibration on oi-zuki is so often done incorrectly. The problem is that when you are punching thin air, it's incredibly difficult to receive the correct feedback. If your punching side hip is moving backward at the moment you make contact with your punch, this is very ineffective. Notice that although Team KI demonstrates oi-zuki with hip vibration in the solo practice, the timing of the hip and the punch is not correct. Lead hip is going backwards on impact. They do not do it this way when demonstrating on the pads however. In fact, there is a general lack of hip vibration when striking a real target.

Anyone who is looking this: In this video it looks like their hand go to full extension (hand straight elbow locked). Now, Im not sure if they hit in full extension but all of you DONT EVER hit full extension. This will destroy your elbow and end you martail art career, or at least you are in pain. What ever martial arts you do none of them when done properly dont include full (locked) elbow extension. There are no exception, no discussion, thats just the way we are built. If you hit with locked elbow long enough its 100% quarantee you are on your way to destroy your elbow. Dont get me wrong, you can go close, very close to full extension but never lock your elbow. You will feel when its locked, dont hit like that.

@ThisIsKetchu3 жыл бұрын
I have a question, you support your punch with your hip rotation at the start of the punch, but at the end of the punch you rotate your hip back to neutral position so your shoulder moves backwards while your punch moves forward, does it not cut power of the punch? I've never seen this anywhere else, but this karate style and I would really like to know.

@haffoc I completely agree with you. Only thing I would like to emphasize is that the video teaches/shows kihon. I don't think as kihon it's "wrong". The way you describe is, in my view, the next level. Better suited for free fight and as you mention both powerful (in terms of both impact and penetration) and fast. But if you teach it this way to beginners they tend to punch too early. Anyway, I was searching for other opinions on just this, so thanks, made my day to know I'm not imagining things.

Awesome channel sensei's. Oss. I too have a question, I would like to see or know. A good way to help with balance (Other then repetition of the kata). Balance is a huge thing when it comes to competition and I'm interested to know if there are any specific methods to improve balance. Thank you, and congratulations on your channel. It's amazing.!
@KenSato-IljaSmorguner7 жыл бұрын
Dear Jesus Sanchez, do you mean for example how to Train Balance to stand on one foot like in KATA GANGAKU or Balance after turns in KATA?
@jggsan18717 жыл бұрын
TEAM KI yes, correct, how to train balance when transitioning from one stance to the other. I know it's a lot of repetition and all, but, how do you strengthen the muscles or how do you train to make your balance better. I know it's one of the biggest problems when it comes to competition. One small loss of balance and you lose... which is why I'd like to know how to train or how to help with balance for transitions. Thank you very much for replying.

Man, what about the elbow? Doesn't hurt?
@thanatophore01303 жыл бұрын
Do we have to extend the elbow entirely ? I feel sometime a little pain (closer to a discomfort than a true pain) when I do it (to extend it entirely and to do it whithout any paos or opponent). Just two points : I'm a beginner in traditional karate (shorin-ryu) and my english may be weird as I'm french.
@williamperkins42792 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't lock the elbow if shoulders are gently squared off and one doesn't rely on rotation and twisting of shoulders to much, gaining force from hips and core while striking towards center line, elbows don't flare up instead staying near to the body, if done right a natural slight bend in the elbows will occurs as the punch extends torward its target like the point of a triangle. This also allows for other transitions such as blocks etc. to be quicker to transition into.
@peterander5817 жыл бұрын
Doesn't it cost power to turn back your hip before you ended the punch?
@zukakog6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it seems like the hip is rotating back too early in the first demonstrations. It doesn't seem to be when they're punching the pad though. Maybe it has something to do with contacting at 80% of your punch for max effect. It's just harder to see the imaginary contact in the air. Or I could be completely wrong, and would love to be corrected by someone who's not just guessing like me! :-)

I always learned to NOT move my fist from the hip directly forward. This way, the punch will make an upward movement as your fist goes forward. Always move your fist towards your arm pit and then punch. When seen from the side, the fist describes a path that looks like a curve, not a straight line. The difference in force when you hit an object, is considerable. When your fist is too low, you can only use your front shoulder muscles (anterior deltoid) to accelerate your fist. If you first bring your fist up, you can al so use your pecs (musculus pectoralis major) , which are far stronger - and faster - muscles. 0:30 ... He is holding his fist quite high and thus his fist moves in a straighter line. He is doing it right. The Japanese man is not......... 0:43 ... He is even flicks his fist DOWN before he strikes. Weird. And a totally wrong technique.
