Oil Burner

9 жыл бұрын

Waste oil burner doing a massive output of 600Kw of free Heat on waste oil. Don't forget to check out my channel for lots of How to's and burner demonstrations.
In order to reach my goal of making a 600Kw waste oil burner I had to increase the fuel supply and also get more air into the waste oil burner. On this vid it ran a mix of Used engine oil and waste Vegetable oil.
I pressurized the oil Tank to help push the oil out quickly and consistently. By increasing the outlet size of the burner I reduced the back pressure so more waste oil could be burnt and heat created.
The burner handled the heat output of 600Kw easily but I maxed out the fuel supply. I have increased the fuel line diameter to half inch and my next trial of them used vegetable oil Burner will e to attempt to go to 750Kw heating power.
I do not think the burner will handle much more than this if it even gets there but I plan on making a burner to attempt to get a full 1000 KW output.

I love it! I use a pressured tank for my foundry burner. Instead of using a tank to pump pressure into another container, I use an old LP grill bottle that is filled with oil and has a siphon tube into the bottom. Then I hook a compressed air regulator onto another port and set it to about 2 psi (14kpa). Plug an air compressor into the regulator and woila, you have a pressurized oil delivery vessel that you can crank up to high pressure if you need it. You, sir, have proven once again you are not among the sissies or winges. Keep em coming!

armorer1984 That sounds like a good setup. A mate did something similar and it worked well. I have thought of this but for the minute I can't find a tank big enough that would give me a decent run time at these outputs. Going north of 1L a min is a bit thirsty and doesn't give much run time either. For normal people who aren't obsessed like myself, I think the sort of setup you are talking about would be an excellent way of supplying the fuel at a constant rate. The ideas I get from people are great and really helpful to myself and others. There are a lot of ways of doing things and having lots of input gives us a variety of options of doing things that suit our individual needs and capabilities best.

Timothy Scott They are not hard to build and I have tutorials on my channel. It's amazing the things you can use them for. This is my most powerful burner yet but It seems I eclipsed it yesterday. The output I got from one of the smaller burners was too much for me really to believe even though I measured it. I'll do another run to check and satisfy myself the numbers are right. I'm going to try for a bigger run with this one soon. I thought I had enough fuel flow but I maxed it out and the thing was still not running rich. I'm hoping to get 750KW out of it but based on what the other one seems to have done yesterday, There may be more potential still.

hey. another idea for pressurising the oil-tank. find a compressor of a refridgerator and combine this with a pressure-sensor from a washing machine. at least here in Germany things like that can be found often for free. usually this pressure sensor is a round sort of capsule, about 10cm maximium in diameter with one or two small hoses leading from or to it. theres a rubber membrane inside that drives a switch. and this switch could shut down the compressor if its connected to the "normally closed" switch. when the pressure is reached. Dunno what pressure it takes exactly to switch it, but U can blow into it pretty easily to "inflate" the membrane and then U hear it clicking inside.

A fuel tank made from 2 propane tanks with a valve between would let you shut the top tank off to refill as the lower tank keeps feeding the burner. Would take a good size valve between them and a cap for the top tank that can hold the pressure you need. Other option is a small barrel inside a 55 gallon barrel in case it pops so the oil is contained.

Can you estimate the how clean/dirty are the exhaust gasses when using vegetable vs used engine oil?
@glumpy10
@glumpy10 8 жыл бұрын
+Henkka G Vegetable oil is renewable and the Co2 released when the oil is burnt is the same as what the plants absorbed when the plant was growing. Used engine oil, like everything, is no where near as bad as the green safety nazis make out. ALL engines burn oil. Some new cars can burn their sump capacity before the required mileage Changes. Some BMW's are one I know of. Either fuel burns as soot free as you set the mixture.

Oil is close enough to 10 Kwh per liter in energy. Multiply consumption per hour and you get KW output. Ie, 5 L hr = 50 Kw, 30L hr = 300kw 600KW = 1L per MINUTE.

Awesome stuff... Gotta love playing with controlled combustion and fire like this! Could you use a large turbocharger in this process? Using the combustion to drive the hot side of the turbo and the compressor side feeding the inferno the same as your electric pump is doing... I guess then you would have more complexities with oiling the turbo, so that would suck, but still it would sound awesome, lol..
@glumpy10
@glumpy10 8 жыл бұрын
+ArchimedeanEye I have thought of that and seen people do it. It requires a lot of extra engineering and support equipment like you say with oil pumps etc . It's interesting but a lot of complication and expense just to make fire. Having a turbine engine would be the ultimate in back yard engine collections though and to me add to the wow factor if it was home made. I have a turbo I would like to set up like this but I need to advance my " technology" skill to the point I could hook it up to a generator or something to do work. I also need to make sure I can build a combustor that produces gas, not just a flame like I am used to that would demolish a turbo in no time.

Hi, How about putting you burner into a large gas bottle with the out pipe going through the gas bottle wall and the inlet just a short pipe, you could have two blowers pumping air into the bottle but the air going into the burner would be very hot, the oil could be fed through the gas bottle wall in a steel pipe into the burner intake pipe
@glumpy10
@glumpy10 9 жыл бұрын
Barrie Holding Yep! That would be another way of doing it and I imagine increase the efficiency a lot by preheating the combustion air. It would be a great way to get more BTU out of a litre of oil if you were doing a heater setup. It may be free fuel but you have to have a go at doing it the best you can. :0)

I'm thinking of trying to run some injectors with an arduino for a small burner like a stove. I have been thinking about measuring flow for a 1500Kw burner which would be doing around 2.5L per min. I'm thinking the best way for this would be to have solenoids on the oil tanks. Set the burn rate with secondary valves ( I'm anticipating 2 Lines for sufficient flow) and then just shut the solenoids. When sanity has returned and all the emergency services have left, I can just put the feed lines in a measuring vessel and run the pumps for say 30 sec and measure the oil flow and multiply it out. The other thing is just to get a flow meter as they will measure the outputs this would take pretty well and I could then see that the consumption was on the fly.

I notice you are using a smaller tank on this one. Does using a tank the size of the average bbq grill propane tank (or a beer keg) vs something this size change the output significantly, or is the size of the combustion chamber not a big factor? Also, how often do you burn out a tank? I commonly find those portable air tanks...the ones you fill and stick in your car to fill tires when you are not near a power source, might be too thin of metal to sustain much more than a few hours of operation before the seams fail. In line with murphy's law, I'm sure I've scrapped dozens of compatible items over the past 3 years, now that I want one...there seem to be none to be found.
@glumpy10
@glumpy10 8 жыл бұрын
+TheStarforce2 Mate I hear you! I have learned over the years to pick up what you can when you can because you can see stuff around everywhere right up to the point you want it then there is nothing to be found for months! The tank has a minor influence on output, more to do with the amount of airflow you can get through it which is really only relevant at the impractical inputs I do with things like this. For other applications such as metal melting and heating. the pipe size of the inlet and outlet has far more influence. I haven't burned out a tank yet. I keep them outside in the weather and they rust up but I have probably put something like 100 hours on this burner now and its still the same as when i built it. I'm surprised at this myself actually, the metal isn't that thick but perhaps a combo of the heat, oil and rust make for some weird preservation mechanism? I have test burnt units for over 12 hours at a time and the long running doesn't seem to effect them either. Maybe extinguishers and gas bottles are made of better metal?

I found a friend on the CB radio who works at a place with empty refrigerant bottles, he also has some exhaust pipe, so my problems might have just been solved. I pointed him your vids. I am planning to build 2, one with size mounted pipe and one on top with the iron pipe like for the 55 gal drum. That one will get used for the big stuff, like what you do with whole mower engines and such. I got the bottom of a boat motor and the prop (damn steel in it) where as the other with the side pipe will be fitted to a decent sized electric pottery kiln that went bad (got it for free). It's too bad I had to smash the larger one, I could have set 2 propane tank sized pots in that one at the same time. I just need to figure out the mechanism over opening the lid when it's hot, and I got a furnace for hotter shit (copper, brass) and smaller breakage. It'd be really cool if I could come up with 2 blowers and run them both at the same time. Going to check thrift stores for old blowers and garage sales and we have the local "ax man" where you can find anything, for some heavy duty dimmer switches to throttle the fans. Another dude at my work is going to give me 16 pounds of copper tube so I think I have my fuel line...depending on diameter. you should look up valveless pulse jets and see if you can get one to run on veg oil lol.

weathermon Thanks. If I heated the oil I'd also soften the plastic drum which I'm a bit wary of anyway. You can use the top of the bottle to hook a pipe and blow heat to the base of the bottle to vaporize the fuel and get a bigger burning.
@glumpy10
@glumpy10 8 жыл бұрын
+Dom Degood The rate of vaporisation isn't the problem. On this run even with pressurized oil, I still couldn't get it in there fast enough to max out the air flow. I think this burner is capable of 1000+Kw if set up right. I am presently working on another design that will be very simple to construct and I believe will be capable of outputs the will be as high as the amount of air and fuel you can pump into them at any rate due to the thing effectively having a double heat application to vaporize the fuel which is much like you are saying here.

@@israrali9318 for 300Kw you Need 30litres of Oil per hour. The blower is kinda random but i use 3 0.4 Kw Blowers. There is no nozzle size as Long as you get that 30litres per hour in.

+Moronicsmurf Surprisingly, no. I only realised the other night I have a vid of one burner from 8 years ago and I have put hundreds of liters of oil through that thing over the years. They also stay outside in the rain and don't seem to rust much either. I did notice the nozzle on this one is a bit flaked with not too many hours run time on it but then again, at this output, is it any wonder? A friend uses one of these burners he made for commercial casting. He said his is showing signs of deterioration but has said his has run well over 100 hours. He is going to make a nozzle out of cast-able ceramic for his. That ought to last forever.

well with your temperatures you could prob. create quartz glass, by melting pure quartz sand and pour it into a form, that thing oughta get hot enough anyway.. I was just to my local car shop and raided them for fittings.. gonna make a go at the T cross section with a fiddly home made nozzle instead of the siphon one i got.. 10mm throughput in a half inch t-cross connector should make both air and oil, have plenty of room and oporunity to pass thru.. With my large compressor and all.. ;)

+Oil Burner Maybe a bit of stainless steel tubing would make the nozzle last longer, if you care. If the burner case is not oxidizing, that says that you don't have excess oxygen - it's all being used up by combusting oil, none left to oxidize the metal.

erlendse As it turns out, a gear pump was exactly what I was thinking of. I do happen to have a spare one I built as a pickup pump as can be seen on my vids. There is a very early and a later vid of them. I was thinking of plumbing it up so I shut down the by pass giving the pressure then using another smaller valve for precise fuel regulation. Even on 12V, the 24V motor will drive the things to 50L MIN easily so I would have something like 30,000 Kw Fuel flow available. Should be adequate. If it's not I could always spin the pump to full speed and get 48,000 Kw potential. ;0) Going to need a bloody big blower though! I would doubt washer pumps would do a thing. Tried some long ago and the oil is way too heavy for them. They basically hardly make a dribble. Gear pumps are cheap to modify for old car parts yourself. :0)

how to BBQ an Elephant in 2 minutes :D what sort of oil ist it exactly, used motor oil? and mixed with some Diesel? 5% Diesel or so? all this gives me the idea of burning plastic garbage. but no halogenic stuff, just Polystyrene, Polypropylene or PE if the burner could be feeded in a practcal way. ever thought of that? btw how do u calculate the power of the set?
@glumpy10
@glumpy10 9 жыл бұрын
BitGridTV This was a mix of used engine oil and waste veggie oil. I run them straight. Diesel costs money, waste oils don't. Plastic will work fine you could feed it in if shredded with an auger system, I was planning to do a demonstration vid showing plastic. Power is calculated through fuel consumption. 1L hr burnt is basically 10Kw hr. 1l min therefore is 600Kw. I haven't looked up the BTU for plastic but just from experiments I expect it to be a high energy density fuel.

why dont you reuse the heat comming off the canister with your air feed pipe rapped around the canister. The incoming air would be heated at least 1,000f. Just like a blast furnice for melting steel. Your desine could be so mutch more efisent. Look into howe a blast furnice works. Your used oil could burn at temps over 3,500f.
@glumpy10
@glumpy10 4 жыл бұрын
Please describe with precision and detail how a person with an average home workshop would wrap the 2.5" diameter pipe around that canister? The air would not have any chance of being heated near 1000oF given the fact the contact area with the chamber would be minuscule being round pipe and the airflow would not allow sufficient heat transfer to warm it more than about 20o if that? As steel melts at 2500of, having the oil burn at 3500 would cause the burner itself to fail and spray molten steel around. That and the fact there is already 600KW of heat coming out this thing is the reason I don't go to the useless trouble of wrapping the air feed pipe around. Please take the time to understand what the hell you are talking about before posting impractical and poorly written Comments.

I got in a bad acdent head injury I had to lern to walk and talk agan. It left me not being able to spell. Yes I receated your burner on a mutch smaller scale. I used a 3 gallon air compreser tank I have a manual pipe bender for up to 1" steel pipe. I raped the tank in 1" pipe only about 10' and it was conpletly coiled from top to ,bottom. Steel melts at 2,500 Fehrenheit or 1,370 Celsus. Iron melts at 2,750 f or 1,510 c. When i was running my experment the phone rang i was gone fore 2 mins ran back out in the grage my cannister had holes burned through it. I almost burned down my grerage. The godzilla super efficient only burns at 2,400 f thats 1,315.6 c. The point I was trying to make is you can make used oil burn at vary high temps. My second experment I am using refactory naterial that can take over 5,000 c What i am trying to do is get the oil to burn compleatly clean with no carbon residue to clean up after. When I ran my experment I was using strait synthetic oil excpt to light it I used a littel gas. So under the right conditions synthetic oil can deffenit burn. Using refactory material I beleve I can beat the record for highest heat. The hotter you can make the oil burn the more efficient it will be. Thats what i am going for. Not the highest Kw out put you already have the highest one.

P.S. I only see the same stupid desines over and over look in to blast furnace. A blast furnace can take a fule like coal and get 5,000f out of it. Your air in pipe needs to rap around your canister like a tight twist insulate the out side of the hole thing to get your inlet air as hot as posible. This is a simple desine based on the blast furnace. Think outside the box.

Calling my design stupid when you cannot even spell simple words really is quite laughable. These are basic and easy to produce burners capable of producing more than sufficient heat for anything a backyard hobbyist would want to do including melting steel. Given steel melts at 2500o, it would be impossible to get this to 5000o without the burner itself melting down long before it got to that temp and idiotic to try. Best you understand what you are talking about before making impractical suggestions.
