Back during the days of carravargio pigments were often extremely expensive, hard to obtain or outright rare so the technique of glazing I imagine came from necessity to make supplies last longer.

I believe you gave the recipe of the master(s) and if one were to just listen to the words that you said and those you did not and then combine that information with a significant amount of time and patience, one could easily achieve a true masterpiece. I believe the key is time and patience. These are 2 things that we all seem to lack in modern times. As you said..what's the hurry? This is the best lecture I have ever heard, TY.

Thank you for this great lecture. For so long I thought I was the only one chasing drying acrylic paints on the canvas like an idiot. I sincerely admire anyone who can even come close to the effect of oil paints with acrylics. One thing I have noticed is that painting with acrylics is so unforgiving that returning to oil paints is like a warm, relaxing long bath. it allows you to appreciate them even more. I understand Stefan's slant on oils. Many years ago, I had never painted in anything but oil and acrylics were typically being bashed by die hard oil painters. Somewhere along the line I ended up in a group of acrylic painters (I was taking art classes as often as possible). I tried them. I have to say that acrylics do not have the smell and 'feel' that you get with oils but I fell in love with being able to do fast painting with them. They certainly are a painting medium of direct expression. That said, I miss when painting in acrylic, the smell of turpentine, linseed oil, etc., that one grows very accustomed to when painting with oils. I call the oils a very sensual experience, for sure. Acrylics are my second love. I can always smell the oil paintings and head in their direction when in a museum.

Acrylic paint are that oddity inbetween Oils and Watercolor that could never truly achieve either's effects. I painted Acrylic in College, and i would mix Satin Varnish into all my paints to glaze with just to make it look like an Oil painting. It will never be as pretty as Oil, but at least my paintings were always finished on deadline.

That was an exceptional session on glazing - I loved the history you brought into the subject which I rarely see. I was applying a glaze earlier and, novice that I am, used WHITE and Liquin to try and push back my saturation...ugh! At least I know I have 50 more glazes to correct the situation. nope, as you pause in between the things you are saying it gives just the right amount of time for my brain to process what you have said, and that is invaluable! so many instructors/lecturers go so fast and from one subject to the next without taking a breath that you miss half of what they are NOW saying while still trying to process what they have just said! i could listen to these lectures all day without getting bored or "falling asleep!" your content is amazing, and as a fairly new to oils painter, i thank you for taking the time to post these lessons, I'm in the UK and would never get to see this sort of quality instruction/information otherwise. thanks again Dan

The clearest explanation of the two periods of art I have heard from the perspective of the artist and the viewer. I was lucky to get some training from a Hungarian professor of art from the Royal Academy who escaped the aftermath of WWI and WWII. There were some language barriers, but like a zen teacher she just pate us things until we “got” it.

I'm a big fan of artist/Illustrator Terry Redlin. I was able to go visit his museum in Watertown S.D last month and see over 150 of his original paintings. Talk about the use of color. He painted using only the three primaries and his paintings glow with light Just amazing.

After listening to many of your videos in the last couple of weeks (quarantine has helped to find this time)...I now have a better understanding of oils. No-one I ever consulted or tried to learn from ever taught me one of these single things you talk about...no wonder I was so frustrated and had given up on learning and thought oils was the last medium I ever wanted to try. In fact, I have tried others, including acrylics, (which I really hate for all the same reasons you give). You are a marvelous teacher and while I am working on an oil painting in these quarantine weeks, I am now no longer enthused because it has none of the knowledge you have given me over these You Tube videos, but at the same time, I can never approach another oil painting without trying out the knowledge you have so generously passed on. Learning to paint in oils at 61 is a challenge...but I like challenges...and experimenting. Thank-you so much. (From a Canadian that has a been living in Italy-Sicily- for the last 40 years and cannot find a decent art teacher in my vicinity)

Thank you from Toronto-Robert Bateman's birthplace! He is now 86 and lives with his wife (artist) on the west coast, B.C. P.S.- The only gift Canada gave to Prince Charles & Princess Diana for their wedding was one of his paintings. His foundation estimates there are approx. 1 million Bateman prints in circulation in the marketplace, plus more than 1 million copies of his coffee-table books.

Glazing sans color Stefan, after getting totally addicted to your videos and learning more than I ever dreamed I would, I decided to do exactly what you said about glazing. Experiment. I noticed that glazing with a bit of complimentary color did change of overall color and I did not want to do that for I was happy with what I had. But I needed more snap, so I glazed with painting with my medium mix alone, recalling what you said about linseed oil getting hard on the garage floor. Wow! what a difference, everything came alive jumping off the canvass after only one coat. I am sure it will dry and I will need to do it multiple times, but so far I am loving the result. Thank you for you insight.

glazing is such a slow process compared to how I want to paint! It really takes vision and self-discipline to glaze a single color, let it dry (for days), varnish it, glaze again, ect. I just blast the sucker with alkyds, I don't have the patience....

I had enjoyed seeing Parrish paintings as illustrations in books. In the mid 90s there was a fantastic exhibition at the American Precision Museum, (NH, I think) My mother had collected his prints years ago, and her house has them hanging everywhere. It's easy to get lost in wonder with them.

Hi here, for glazing so many layers with oil for dilution, how can we maintain Fat over Lean rule? Adding more and more oils in later layer? Too much oil may form a film so smooth that no more paint accepted on top. Also we usually have opaque highlight on final top, which is lean compared with bottom glazed.

Many years back I did 2 years in college for an access into art and design course. I ended up blocked rather than inspired at the end of it, and didn't make art for years after. I cant help but ponder how differently I would have felt if stefan had of been my teacher/mentor. I'm going to make it a rule to watch these every day. I get something out of every one I've listened to so far. My plan is to set up as a self employed artist, which I'm currently studying the ins and outs of in terms of the business aspect. I'm so grateful to find this wonderful artist and to feel so incredibly inspired everytime I hear him speak so passionately about the great masters and the joy of being able to Express ourselves by way of our art. Strange at the end you mention Bateman, I used to represent him a while back. But my friend mentor as connection to him was David Jean of Toronto.actually I used to finish if his bread & butter paintings for him. Gosh I miss them so much, worked for a publishing company too, believe it or not, as a scout, in US too. But as said earlier, David used alot of the old Masters technique, I am now to pick up painting again for myself, instead of finding money for them. I learned alot, but waited too long as now have eye issues. Still shy tho and so much competition it's scary. Age has caught up. So will just focus and learning alot more from your videos thanks a mill.

I love all your videos and your enthusiasm for art. Your knowledge is extensive and so helpful. But I have a comment on your criticism of artists who use acrylic paint. I used to be an oil painter, and I found that even if I used gambol and odorless turpinoids I got migraines from painting with oils. In addition to that, the space in my house that I have to paint in and to store, my paintings, doesn’t allow me to let oil paintings sit for the length of time they need to dry. Therefore, I paint in acrylics. I’m not trying to make my acrylic paintings look like oils but instead I use the medium to create paintings that I love And that dry quickly so they can be stored easily. If I had a large studio and lots of space for oil paintings to sit around and drive for six months without the cat or the dog or the children rubbing up against them and I might go back to oil painting that is if it didn’t give me migraines, lol! Thanks again for all your wonderful videos. I do enjoy them.

This was a very insightful and useful video for me, thanks 😊 I am an acrylic painter and while I do agree with what others have said about your pure disregard to the value of acrylics, I do find myself frustrated and bored with some of the mediums limitations. I began experimenting with glazing and scumbling, building layers upon layers but still feel like an element is missing. Currently I'm introducing oils into my paintings. And watching this particular video gave me a couple tricks to implement into my paintings. The biggest problem I have with oils though is cleanup and the turps. Old habits die hard you know.
