This is a QUICK overview of oil painting, including some background, SUGGESTED SUPPLIES for getting started, and STUDIO SAFTEY. This is the first video in my series for Beginner Oil Painters. Suitable for the absolute beginner, to the artist looking for a most basic refresher.
Let me know if the comments what other Beginner topics or questions you would like to see me cover in this series. I ANSWER EVERY ART QUESTION I GET so feel free to ask away in the comments.
CORRECTION-- Oxidation is the correct spelling- Apparently I was using the French spelling- It looks prettier that way so maybe all is forgiven?

Is it hard to get those crisp lines with such a slow cure or do they not blend or bleed together unless you work it? Love your video editing and doodles❤

Thanks ❤️🥰 the paint will stay put as it dries unless it was too thin. So really while the paint is wet I try to get it just how I want it and it should stay the same. There are some effects that only work once the layer below is already dry so it takes some planning ahead for when to keep things wet and when to let things dry.

I realize this is debatable to how much it matters, but i would love it, if you would discuss archival quiality in substrates (type of material you choose to paint on) and the lightfastness of certain paints. That is something i always worry about. Also about whether linen cloth or a regular canvas from a store is better to use. or how to create a "process" for creating your art. All things i think would be helpful to hear about.

Thanks so much for the great questions! Those are all topics I’ll make sure are on my list. I can sum up a few things for you. I use archival materials as much as I can. I realize that for the vast majority of my work it’s probably really not necessary that it lasts forever. I expect what my family keeps and passed down may be wanted the longest. But I also want to provide my collectors with heirloom quality pieces. I could use cheaper materials for practice, and I often times do when it comes to my support/substrate choices. I generally stick to the same paints whatever I’m doing so that I keep my practice consistent. I love the how to create a process for your art question. I’ll work on a video for that soon- I’m preparing an in person workshop this fall centered on that exact question.

@@crystal.despain-art You are most welcome. I like that, about the paints because i would imagine i would do the same thing. I tend to be obsessed with things lasting and i sorta stopped making stuff when i realized i had no idea what i was doing lol because i had no idea about materials. It is true that once you sell a work or gift a work it takes on a life of its own. Do you ever feel nervous about your paintings going into the world? Thank you! I cannot wait to see that video. I think that is probably the most important thing that also happens to rarely be talked about. But that is what i am struggling with is creating a process and showing up and having actual determination and accountability for actually trying to create my world. So I indeed look forward to that video. Thank you also in your response for the glimpse into your process.

@devernepersonal3636 I absolutely get nervous putting my work out. All kinds of work too- paintings in shows and commissions especially. But also videos and teaching. Process really is everything. I’m glad you realize it’s importance. People always focus on developing a style but what they should really be focused on is creating a personal process that your style will develop from naturally.

@@crystal.despain-art Thank you. I certainly do, and it is because i have a strong lack of it and that causes me to just not be remotely motivated. i do what i call over-glorified sketches in my sketchbook and thats about it. You are so right about style. it doesn't matter what genre of painting you do, what subjects you paint, what movement you like to emulate or if you are realistic or abstract, your style is independent of all of that. At least that is what it seems like. But it has no place to blossom if the process does not have a good ecosystem.

The toxic colors scare me because I dont like wearing gloves.. but do the hues look and work just as well? I wonder if they mix the same or if they’re not as true of a color?
@crystal.despain-art
@crystal.despain-art 3 ай бұрын
Understandable 😊 I would say it depends on the hue. Hues are often times lower quality- which can equate to quick fading. Hues contain more than one pigment that is meant to come as close to the original pigment as possible, but it may have different characteristics when thinned, tinted (+white), or mixed with other colors. What are the toxic hues you are hoping to replace?

Another idea for you, look into skin barrier cream. I’m not sure how effective it is compared to gloves, but I’m curious.

@crystal.despain-art I use cad red light and cad yellow light.. and the mixing with other colors being inconsistent was my worry.. have you had good luck with the hues of those? Skin barrier cream- thank you I’ll look into it

@MrEllenstone I don’t think that there is a really close non toxic alternative. I’m Curious though- pyrrole red isn’t as as opaque and it’s brighter, but that may work. I use it on my palette along with my other reds Vermillion (toxic), and Alizarin Claret. For the yellow Naples yellow? Actually, windsor Newton makes a cad free version of red and yellow. You could look into those.
