I’ve been painting for a few years now. I’m in a wheelchair, and had a stroke. I’ve literally had to form tips like these to work for me. "Standing" 6’ away? Not going to happen lol. But, I do only paint for 15/30 minutes, and then roll back to look at the entire picture. Drink some water. Long handle brushes are a must. Anything less , and you’ll tire your arms out. It’s not a pencil. Don’t hold it as such. Long handles usually allow one’s elbow to rest on the arm rest. When choosing an easel make sure you get one that your wheelchair can fit under. Another option is a tabletop easel if you have a shelf/desk you can roll under. I also wanted to point out that I’ve been a subscriber since I started painting in late 2019, and you had yet to break 10k subscriptions. Congratulations on the success with your Patreon, Subscriptions, Facebook page, training videos, and painting in general. 👊

It is my personal preference. To paint smooth applying thin layers no brush Strokes no Globs of paint. It is my preference to have as much detail as needed. For close up observations❤❤❤❤❤ it is my personal preference to end up with the landscape are still alive but it's not so loose that you can recognize what it's supposed to be. Without the mind adding for instance as the work of Vermeer, Caravaggio . You're right it's your personal preference of how you want your work to B❤❤❤❤ thank you so much I love your videos I love your teaching knowledge that's why I subscribed. The best to you and great success❤❤❤❤❤❤

Good advice. I started drawing with a pencil on the canvas, moved on to charcoal, then to brush drawing. Also if a painting is taking a long time you don't see the imbalances, faults etc. You see the trees not the forest even when you stand back. Every now and then look at it via a mirror for a fresh perspective.

I've only been painting in oils since 2001 (strictly watercolours before that; self-taught in both) and always thought "fat over lean" and "thick over thin" meant the same thing, especially since I rarely ever use any medium. Thanks for clearing that one up, Chris!

12:17 I just had an idea. I'm not sure what the contraption is called but let's call it a compass. If you extend the legs on the other side to be longer and you have a bolt and a wingnut you can adjust the connection point you can pretty easily enlarge a photo or something small with better precision, right? You use the extended legs on the other side of the wingnut on the painting to get some crucial points at the right places and Bob is your aunt's husband. Am I the last to know or is it a good idea? :D

I just started oil painting. No thinners. I don't have money for it so I'm doing straight paint. However, my first painting is turning out beautiful. I'm doing a portrait of my cat in the sink. She is a dilute calico. She looks so realistic and my family wants to frame it. I have really no experience in paint but subconsciously I've been following ur tips. I've been doing the painting nonstop while it's wet. Doing sections at a time and I thought it would be hard and get muddled, but I've managed to keep the colors separate and blend well also. I'm really excited. I've been drawing for years. Anime, realistic, nature, ect. My grandmother's both are painters. I just thought on trying something new

I wish to practice on smaller paintings and that pad seems like a economical way to start. Did you gesso it first? Thank you

(Background Im 30 yo and had oil painting classes at 6yo and that's it, then stopped with oils but recently bought my first quality set and already had my easel and had continued painting but with watercolors) I see a lot of KZbinrs painting a small part of their painting, say an entire eye with details and all... Until finishing and them moving on and that reallyyyy confused me and made me think I was just wrong on using oil paints the way you are , layers and big areas and blocking out. So thanks for showing me this is ok too!!! Also, I'm glad I only make 3 out of this 10 mistakes hehehe , will work on that! Gracias maestrooo.

I have osteoarthritis, so standing while painting is a big no no for me. My spine compresses and I end up in pain. It's a necessity to sit down. However, I often stand back, turn the canvas around, rest my eyes, etc. It sucked during art school because we were made to stand for hours and I'd get terrible back and shoulder pain and didn't know why. I didn't even know I was developing arthritis, I was only 19! It's a big bummer for sure...
@Iloveflowers2024 Жыл бұрын
Arthritis is horrible. You have my empathy. I have it myself in many joints, many areas. Started with RA then also developed the OA which is now the cause of most my problems. I started at a young age, early 20's. Have a couple of joint replacements. I can relate to what you shared about not being able to stand and paint for long. I have to sit too. I get up and stretch, walk around and take breaks. But yes, have to mostly sit to do my art work. I also have shoulder pain due to arthritis and so I can't hold my arm up for very long at all. I also do miniature work so I have to sit for that. I haven't painted in a long while but will get back to it. I'm doing graphite drawing at the moment. I have a table top easel and I just bought a chair on casters so I will be able to roll back and forth. So I am getting ready to paint soon. We can only do the best we can with the abilities we have. Those of us with chronic pain and limited mobility have to adapt, modify things and do what works for us individually. A lot of people who don't deal with these issues are not able to relate or understand. Keep on creating art and enjoying and doing whatever works for you to cause you the least amount of discomfort. All the best to you.

I have very weak limbs due to spinal problems and nerve issues, so just thinking of using a standing easel makes me ache lol, but I suppose it's a chance to use it as physical therapy. Would it be reasonable yo meet in the middle by working on a piece that's tilted, something between standing and flat on a table? I'm used to watercolor and haven't experimented with oils much because I'm afraid of wasting money and impatient with daytime, but I'm still curious and know that I can learn a lot as an artist by experimenting with different mediums.
@lyndelldean2 жыл бұрын
I have a similar situation and use a mirror behind me and one in front of me (mounted on opposite walls) then at a glance I can view reflected images in multiples of the distance between the mirrors, it works really great for me!
@Iloveflowers2024 Жыл бұрын
I think we just adapt and modify to suit our individual abilities. A table top easel could work for you and then a chair on casters to be able to roll back and forth to view the art piece at a distance. I've used a table top easel before and it works for me ok. (I think you can get ones that tilt and angle) I have just bought a comfy office chair with wheels so I will be able to roll back and forth. Or you could have a standing easel and have it modified to a height you can reach from sitting in a chair. I'm sure there are many artists who are in wheelchairs and have things modified so they can paint. You do whatever works for you personally and what causes you the least amount of physical pain and discomfort. I have pretty much pain whatever position I'm in, but sitting to create art is best for me. I get up to stretch, take breaks and view the piece from a distance. Definitely explore different mediums. Do whatever you want to try, you won't be wasting money. I don't see it as wasting money if someone wants to be Creative. It's like that with most hobbies, you won't know if you don't try it out. You may find that you'll love oils. I enjoyed the oil paint with what bit of experience I've had with them and I definitely intend to play with them some more. I have tried different mediums, whatever mood I am in, I'm not a master of anything. Just a beginner artist testing things out. 😁 If money is an issue, perhaps use coupons, check for sales, get student paint, less expensive paint, maybe even see if someone will give you some freebie materials. On Facebook there are "buy nothing" groups for the local area where one lives. And you could ask if anyone has art materials to give away. Online sources like Jerry's Artarama have good art supply prices. Whatever the case go for it! Life is short. Enjoy!

If you have a commission/assignment, do whatever gets the best results. Trace, project, decoupage your reference onto the medium, and go from there. If you're screwing around off the clock, do whatever floats your boat. Peace.
