I've just started oil painting 4 months ago and use Old Holland oils. This is a wonderful series. Thank you.

Great Demo! Williamburg and Rublev have Munsell notation for their oil paints. I really wanna get the Munsell color chip book.

In a book called the oil painters color handbook by Todd m Casey, he has made this chart using all gamblin paints. I printed it out and set it up in my studio. I love it.

I mostly use a mix of Vasari, Gamblin, Langridge (Australian company), Blockx, Old Holland - a fair variety.

Hi, thanks for this video. Very interesting. I'm using Van Gogh paint by Royal Talens, also Daler Rowney/Georgian. They do have pigment indications on the tube but how do I convert this in Munsell values?

why did you place cad red light at 7.5R when Gamblin specifies it is a 5R?
@ChrisBeavenart Жыл бұрын
Hmm... I'll have to check that, maybe I got it wrong. Place it based on gamblin's numbers.

No it actually isn't. Simply type 'Munsell colour system' into Google or a similar search engine.

Thank you so much for this!! I will make a chart for sure. Is it possible to map mixed pigment colours somehow on the wheel? Or is it only for single pigment?
@ChrisBeavenart2 жыл бұрын
The only way I know that you can do that and be super accurate is to get a spectograph reading of the color. I would suggest adding the paints right out of the tubes and use the color wheel for several paintings. Then when you're getting a better understanding of your paints plotted on a wheel then you will have a better understanding where mixed colors would go. That could work but as I think about it I could see the color wheel becoming a mess of mixed color that you don't have any longer. Better, in my opinion, to just have out of the tube colors on the wheel. Let me know how it works out for you after you make it! thanks for the comment!

@@ChrisBeavenart Thank you for your reply! 😊 I meant mixed pigment colours straight from the tube, for example I have a sap green from Daniel Smith

This is exactly what I've been looking for! Are there by any chance premade wheels for specific brands? I'd very much appreciate a wheel with all the winsor and newton colors on it, but i couldn't find anything on google. But very useful video! Thank you, sir.
@ChrisBeavenart Жыл бұрын
I wish the same! I never found anything so I created this method to create my own. Such a great idea though. Maybe I should pitch the idea to Gamblin and Winsor & Newton. If you try and make it yourself and need help identifying color locations shoot me a message chris@chrisbeaven.com. I was able to help people on my live stream that had colors without a proper Munsell designation. Thanks for the comment!

There seem to be some differences between the munsell numbers given by Gamblin and those on Colorwell. For example: Gamblin doesn't list any of their oilpaints in the 5Y hue, while Colorwell puts 2 of them in that 5Y category namely: cadmium yellow light and Hansa yellow medium. Colorwell even puts the cadmium yellow light by Gamblin in the 7.5Y. The same paint in two hue categories?

Yeah, unfortunately it's not an exact science it looks like.

M Graham does not have Munsell codes…how can I approximate which specific tube color to buy for the 10 hues of Munsell colors?
@ChrisBeavenart8 ай бұрын
That's a hard one. I don't think there is an exact way. Only if someone has measured the color.

Blue and yellow make green which is not a neutral! You will need a violet to get close to the shadow colour of the banana.
