Great work. Your current picture helps me. I am still learning and try to get correctly the 3/4 view especially the nose and mouth on oil painting on canvas. Needs lots of practice and patience to be perfect. Thank you so much for sharing.

Another lovely portrait. I am sure that the steps you note here are great. As somewhat of a beginner, I would have found it helpful if the steps went along with what you were painting - in other words, if you paused the video for the moment that you were addressing what you had just done in the video. I appreciate your efforts to help teach us with your videos.

Thank you for the video. I wonder how you can choose the right painting colors although the light in your room is constantly changing in brightness as well as in color.

Good topic and lovely painting. This is what I think about criticism: Real criticism in my opinion is when you get real advice, compliments and carrots meaning it has to be balanced. This man didn't do that he put the man painting down in a very novice way only saying that you waist time. An other thing with art is the some as with clouds in the sky they are all different and they can't be repeated by an other cloud. Every painting is unique because it always comes from the person who is painting 🎨

Great video! Congratulations an best wishes in your career. I have been practicing portrait painting in oils. I know I have long ways to become proficient. My first question is how do you exactly get the likeness from a photo reference? My drawings are good but somewhere in the painting process, there is always something missing. Secondly, how often you need to practice? Thanks so much for the guide and looking forward to watch more of your videos. Blessings and be safe please.

What are you doing at the 9 minute mark? Is that varnish? If so may I ask why? Thank you so much in advance!
@rjwalker41533 жыл бұрын
The brush looks wet, so yeah I would say it's varnish. I'm not an expert but many use it to protect the painting once it is finished and has dried, and also to bring all the colors up to an even sheen and/or to bring out the colors that have dulled. As an amateur artist, I've never bothered though. I have an oil painting I did over 30 years ago that still looks like it was done yesterday, is great and vibrant and was never varnished.

How many weeks or days u had took before to put Varnish? And what type.of varnish u are using for the first layer?

Do u use a medium very often on this portrait?

I have always drawn a semi detailed "map" of light and shadow in pencil. It helps a lot but as soon as paint touches it it smears and make the paint look muddy. Not a big deal but annoying and the map changes with each stroke. I may need to start sketching with diluted paint like everyone else.

You can spray a fixative down over your pencil sketch and it will prevent it from mixing into the paint. I've heard that colored pencils also work well.
