And as others have pointed out, most people don't have time or can't afford sitting for an artist, photos make that easier for everyone. I like Tischler's approach to this problem, when he can he does a quick study to capture the sitters 'personality', and takes his own photos to uses later to help with the details for the final painting. Its a win win for the artist and the sitter.

@@johncorley3487 Hello, I just thought you’d want to know that you send this message to someone who commented on this video, and not the one who made it, acrylic painting is harder to blend but as you know dries quickly, whereas oil doesn’t (therefore is easier to blend). The outline and blocking principle does apply to acrylic, although a big reason people do it with oil paint is because the blocking and outline can be manipulated after you’ve done it, so the answer is yes but drawing an outline may be easier for acrylic.

I have undertaken to paint a lifesize portrait from a black and white photo , I have it well started on canvas , I knew the subject well before he died , but to apply the colours and detail correctly I need courage and inspiration .

This tutorial is truly amazing. Her age brings way more detail than a young smooth skinned person. Your method is simply amazing and it shows that you have spent much time developing it. As more of a beginner, I use methods of laying out my subject that I used while I was a sign painter and billboard artist. Many consider it cheating when using an overhead projector but that's what I have settled into, saving lots of time on the layouts. One thing I didn't catch was if you paint wet on wet or do you let each layer dry. Being older, (70) I can only work for an hour or so at a time before I get exhausted. It's the mental concentration that exhausts me the most. Thank you so much for posting this. It is my opinion that portraits are the final frontier of learning to paint.

Azekel Imre understatement of the century. “Pretty” downplays the “realistic.” This painting is brilliant in its realism and personality.
