Oil pastel burnout and trying out gouache ✨

I wanted to share that not every art piece turns out nicely, that we all struggle sometimes and that it’ okay to try doing something different.
After I failed at this oil pastel painting I decided to take a break from oil pastels and try out gouache. It was super fun! I also talk a bit about burnout and art block and ways to overcome it.

that first painting is extremely BEAUTIFUL, and i know your feeling. I paint too, and i feel presure when i use expensive tools to make art, a pressure to make a hole piece and finish it, a pressure to not mess it. wHAT WORKED for me was drawing on affordable paper and drawing for myself what i like, and not to sell..drawing whatever i would love and feeling happy.. thats the key to draw like a child with no worries .. @@YolandaBlazquez

I transitioned from gouache / watercolor to soft pastels (and ordering oil pastels) a few months ago, and I don't think I will ever burn out. I like the simplicity and directness working with pastels, no water needed, and you don't have to manage the water / paint balance, while you can achieve the same image as with gouache. I don't care about the dirty hands, the process is more direct with pastels, like a cave painter..Oh and no interruption with pastels like with water management with water mediums.

I totally get that but also, no color shift!! I love pastels, I just wasn’t feeling like creating art at the time I recorded this painting ☺ I’ve continued using them after publishing the video. I mind the mess because I record and I have to touch my camera often and change batteries frequently otherwise I don’t care.

I am so glad to see someone else destroys their art. I have done this often but never tell anyone. Sometimes I look at a finished piece and it just offends me because I did not achieve what I wanted or it doesn't have the emotion I desired. 🙃 so I take them outside and put them in my fire pit and say farewell. 😁✨️ thank you for sharing this. This made me feel not so alone in this.

Goodness! Such somber Drama! We all have choices! I think It’s exciting to move from one media to another👍😀. If you haven’t tried combining gouache and oil pastel, it’s a fun thing to do. Isolation and not working from real models may be an issue. Talent has to be shared in a variety of ways.

I haven’t combined oil pastels with anything but it’s also something to consider, specially if I ever dare to paint large with gouache. If I could paint from real life models that would be awesome but it’s not available to me so I do what I can ☺️

The main thing is to create! It doesn’t matter what material, what time of day, or even what the weather is like outside. I always admire the works, how they manage to convey tenderness, lightness, and calmness. I apologize if I am not writing clearly (through a translator). Sometimes it just needs to be destroyed for something new to be able to grow. I've ripped up paintings, or covered them with new layers. I also know that feeling of not wanting to look at it anymore. Art block or burnout happens to all of us. A great "break" is changing your art space around. Putting away the stuff you aren't into at this moment, and taking out those you want to play with. Making a mood/inspiration board also helps and is lots of fun. And a great challenge is making "ugly" paintings. This video is an important one. We all need to hear it, and we all need more time to play, and create just for fun and nothing else. 🖤

It's exactly the same with cooking. If you're in the mood and excited about what you're preparing - the food "knows". That is the love "ingredient" everyone speaks of, and can feel and taste. If, however, you're in a bad mood and don't really want to cook? The food "knows" that, too. You can almost taste the lack of "love" put in to the dish. It's the same with other art / creative forms. You can not force it. If you do, you end up unhappy.

Your gouache is stunning! Your “failed” painting was also beautiful, but I get it. You look at it and see the process. I fall in and out of love with oil pastels a lot. I don’t stick with it long enough to get good at it, but I would like to.

Some people have a file for art they created and don’t like and others just throw it out. My art teacher warned me that everyone that creates art at all throws out plenty that they don’t like, even his students that were professional artists for years and create beautiful art, were like this. I’m so thankful they all shared this with me and he made sure to mention it to me. Some beginners think that once you reach a professional level you won’t even use erasers!😂 Thank you for sharing this. When you ripped that painting, I felt that 😢 I have hated and still do so many of the things I've made but even so, never let myself throw something away. Even if creating something felt horrible or in the end looks awful to me, I still created that thing and put a lot of hard work into it. In my opinion, I think it's okay to hate something we've created, but perhaps instead of throwing it away like garbage. See if someone else would be happy to have it? Give it to a friend? Sell it? We can be our own worst critics and honestly when I look at your painting, all I see is beauty I understand why you did it, but it just breaks my heart 😅❤ you are an incredible artist. See this as a stepping stone for learning what works for you and what makes you happy to create

I wouldn’t give away something I’m not proud of, even if I had put many hours into it. Both of your end products are incredible to me, but I must say I can see in the final result of both how you had more interest in the latter. She is gorgeous. I am not a talented artist like you, but I actually appreciate seeing someone at your level dismissing a work I consider beautiful. It just reminds me that we are all hard on ourselves, and that all works are subjective in their qualities of beauty, especially by the artist themself. Oh, I love gouache! I didn’t the first time I tried it, and then I just used it how I wanted to, and then I liked it :-) a lot of times we get hung up on how a medium is supposed to be used, but just like oil pastels, They can be used so many different ways and none of the ways is wrong.… I am just starting to use oil pastels and if it wasn’t for your videos, I would’ve just kept throwing them back in the drawer and saying, “These aren’t for me“. gouache is a lot like oil pastel, because it is so versatile… it reminds me of a medium that is got quite a lot in common with all mediums. I love it, it is great! Brands definitely make a difference :-)

Gouache sounds like a lot of fun but I’m still not sure it’s for me because I love blending 😆 for the same reason I don’t think acrylics would suit me. That being said I’ll definitely try again whenever I feel like a need a break or a change. Oil pastels are very versatile, I think they are more suited for a more impressionistic style but you can achieve whatever you want with them. I really like them although at the moment I’m switching between them and regular oils and different subjects trying to avoid burning out

I really enjoy seeing your beautiful work (although I think you are a bit hard on yourself). Note that you can fix the gauche cracking (as well as water cracking) by just adding a couple drops of humectant to your paint when you put it in a pan. Humectant is what is put in paint by manufacturers to help it rewet more easily and is sometimes used as a binder. Honey is one humectant used; vegetable glycerin is another. When panning, I add some to most of my paints that don't already contain honey. You do not want to add too much as the paint won't dry. I use about 1 to 4 drops in a half pan depending on the color; some colors are much more difficult to wet. You can gauge this by trying a dot card by the manufacturer or making your own dots and letting them dry completely. If the color releases easily using a soft watercolor brush then add less. If it requires more strokes, add more humectant. Hope this helps!

Next time to avoid cracking you can use one or two drops of glycerin and of honey it does help but also depends of the brand of gouache you are using. I personally use holbein more.

I understand what you mean. I do very few commissions but the ones I choose to make are of babies and children because I love doing those. If I had to take on any commission that comes my way for a living I would struggle very much.

To make the dried gouache usable again you can spray water in them and let them soak it and stir it in a few hour intervals or even a day, this is what I do and they come back to creamy consistency, I use the same gouache as you also

caran dahes gouache is dry anyway....just use it like watercolour pans but add lots of water or reactivate with water like prviuosly suggested. I also keep my old used paint dried on its pallette so no waste@@YolandaBlazquez

When I use gouache, I always keep a scrap piece of paper by the mixing palette. Every time I mix a colour I swatch it on the paper and shake it in the air to make it dry quickly. Doing this I can see exactly how it will look after the drying shift.

Seemed an incredibly good painting. There’s me keeping a huge unwieldy pile of all my stuff, and it’s nowhere near this good. I like to see the progression. I was amused to recognise the pencil case on the shelf. I preferred a different design, but it’s a good one, holds many pencils. I feel you on the pressure. I sometimes find the little sketchbook too small but I have a roll of big cheap plainer paper and can draw big on it with crayons or something, markers are also good for loose stuff. They make bigger swipes and marks than a pencil too, but whatever works. The gouache could use some glycerine mixed in to dry more gentle in a pan. I had one crumble anyway and bits of it contaminated other colours, very annoying.

Keeping all works to see progress is very valid and I do that too but there was no progress with this painting and it wasn’t gonna end up being better than my previous ones so there was no need for me to store it. Cheap sketchbooks or regular printing paper are very freeing too ☺️ I won’t say I will never give markers a go but they seem daunting and difficult. I used them in my teens for some simple manga art. more people have suggested to add glycerin so I will have to give it a go, thanks!

Oh, you broke my heart when you ripped up the painting. Someone would have loved it......that being said....I have ripped up lots of my watercolor paintings or painted on the back of the painting. Piles and piles have eventually gone in the trash. I'm one year into experimenting with oil pastels and gouache. I've come to conclusion the artist grade pastels and gouache are better than student grade. I'm slowly upgrading to artist quality. Your work is beautiful. Thanks for sharing it. I find gouache is best from the tube. Schmincke is the best brand but beyond my budget. I'm using Winsor Newton Designer's gouache. I gave away my Himi jelly gouache....yuk...just didn't like it. I'm putting my work in sketchbooks too. I have a LONG ways to go to get to your level. But it's fun and a great hobby for me as I'm retired.

Thanks a lot for understanding and for sharing your experience. I think we all do it and keep doing it and it’s part of the journey. I don’t want to sound like a snob but I always go for artist grade materials, I’ve considered making a video about this too, and the main reason is because I don’t want the supplies to be the culprit on any “failures” I may have and I don’t want them to stop me from fully enjoy the medium. I buy artist grade but it doesn’t have to be the most expensive out there and when it comes to paint that is mixed on a palette (gouache, watercolors or oils) I prefer to only have a few tubes of good paint than many of low quality. I have no idea about gouache but the ochre and red that I later added were Winsor and Newton and since I have no experience I couldn’t tell a difference 😊

It's understandable that some of the effects of oil pastels are not easy, and I think you can try pastel sticks and pastel pencils, which will definitely make you discover something new.-from a pastel artist's honest advice

Your pastel oil painting was stunning! Maybe if you didn't like it you could have given it to someone for free or reduced price. I'm sure someone would have paid postage for it. But understand how you feel as artists we are very particular about the details and beat ourselves up if it's not right and very upsetting. I love painting in sketchbooks and it doesn't matter if things go wrong it's experimental and a very personal journey of developing your skills. You have inspired me to buy some oil pastels and try portraits. I haven't done one yet but waiting for the right time and feeling to create.

@@YolandaBlazquez I was going to sell zippered book covers and pouches made of cork fabric and faux leather. I needed them to be 100% perfect or I'd toss them aside... even for very minor things that most people wouldn't have noticed. It made me sad to see you rip up your painting (which was beautiful!) because I do the same thing with my sewing. Perfectionism is awful and I wish I could get over it.

@@portgree Oh I feel that! I bet nobody would ever notice those “imperfections”, and actually I see them as a sign that it’s handmade and not mass produced. It’s a shame, I hope one day you’ll be able to let that level of perfectionism go ❤ I’ve made pajamas as Christmas gifts and I’m almost worrying about the inside seams even though I used my overlocker 🙈 I think it’s different with my paintings though because even when I’m not never 100% satisfied with them, I still share them or sell them, I just didn’t like this one or the process

I love yoir vidéo and voice and paintings, im starting oil pastels. However i disagree when you destroy your work, you really shouldnt. The painting was so perfect. Please think of people who have no money to buy material, or no possibility to learn.

¡Muchas gracias! Creo que es algo que no se comenta ni enseña por no quedar “mal” y para dar la imagen de que somos perfectos pero en mi opinión esto forma parte del proceso y mostrarlo ayuda a que otros se vean reflejados.

@@YolandaBlazquez En una escuela de arte un maestro te pedía hacer tu mejor dibujo y al terminarlo te pedía romperlo y nadie quería hacerlo pero era parte de la clase el propósito de ese ejercicio era que tú como autor supieras que puedes volver a hacer nuevamente tu dibujo y despegarte de el mucha de tu obra no se quedara contigo por ser encargos de alguien más.y también se debemos ser autocríticos y exigentes con nuestro propio trabajo

A big part of the success is in the process itself for me. It doesn’t have to be easy and I like a challenge but I have to do it because I want to and not because I feel like I have to. Painting like this (and better) takes years of practice but you can do it too 🙂

@@user-uv9zr8qs2c I’m a total beginner with gouache but I’ve been painting for a very long time in other media and the fundamentals (proportions, light, color and color mixing…) are the same so I can get an “acceptable” result with it or any other thing, same as anyone that has been painting for long. I hope this gives you motivation ☺ once you know how to work in one medium well, it’s much easier to jump to another one because you never start from scratch again

The way an artist measures success isn’t always just in technical skill. If a piece doesn’t show what you want to convey or where you want your art to go they won’t be happy even if outsiders perceive it as well done.
