Oil Pastel Resist with Gel Plate

Want to expand your gelatin printing techniques?
Try this oil pastel resist with a photo or scanned image. It results in lots of variation and is really fun!
Materials you'll need:
-Oil pastel stick or crayon any color.
-A printout/photocopy, high contrast on regular copy paper, though a cardstock sometimes works well. Images shown here: Writer Zora Neale Hurston, Artist Frida Kahlo
-Printing paper such as cardstock, mixed media or smooth watercolor paper
-Regular soft body acrylics like Amsterdam, Liquitex
-Brayer

Gallery soft oil pastels (Jerrys Artarama) or Cray Pas oil pastels are pastels I used. Need to be thick, pretty high quality.

Question. Did you have several copies of the Freida print and add pastels to each of them, or were you using the same 1 over and over again?

I had several printed out, and I kept adding pastel to one of those prints to see if it would keep going. You can keep adding pastel a few times to the same photocopy after which it's harder to get an image.

This is very cool! Thanks for sharing. I can't wait to try it. A question - your print peels off so beautifully without leaving any paint or paper on the plate... for some reason, my paper is been sticking the plate and pieces of start tearing and leaving bits and pieces of torn paper on the plate. I have ruined so many gorgeous prints this way in the last few days... its so frustrating. Any tips would be welcome!

Hmm. I think the first thing I would look at is your paper. A strong paper such as cardstock or watercolor paper can handle these alternative processes, but a thin paper such as copy paper may not do so well, and may break up or stick to the plate. Try changing the paper and see if that has any impact.

As strange as it may seem, I have found that sometimes if the paper tears it's because it isn't dry enough! The part that tears is still a bit damp. I figured that out one day when someone suggested leaving the paper on overnight in order to fully clean your plate. (I wouldn't try this with tissue paper or very fine paper though) It takes a while to find out the exact quantity of paint to use and the exact time to leave your prints, but eventually you'll get there. Another trick is to flip your gel plate over and peel it off of your paper instead of the opposite. Somehow, bending and rolling the plate helps it to release the paint.
