Nice result! I get the same resist result using acrylic inks on my gel plate. I sometimes mix acrylic inks with standard acrylic paints to give them a little more fluidity and intensity of color. Also, the neon acrylic inks remain translucent, so the effect is a nice glazing of the subsequent layers. The color on the original prints remain visible, but are glazed over with a wash of color, in other words. For instance, I pulled a print that had nice abstract leafy shapes in a blue-green overtone, but I really wished for them to have been more greenish, so... I laid on some neon yellow and orange acrylic ink over the entire gel plate, brayering until it it was a little more tacky and was less likely to resist and pool, like your watery mix did. I placed my original print onto the plate right away and left it for about five minutes before pulling. The result was a nice, even coating of orangey-yellow, which rendered the blue a beautifully glazed green and the background white a nice rich warm yellow. -Enjoying your channel! Have fun!

“I should have left it alone but I can’t help myself”..how many times have I said that to myself? But you know, it’s your art and your vision, and your fun, and I for one love the collages you add. They add texture, interest, and solicit questions. That’s what abstract art is to me.

Thank you for continuing to share your process! I think your additions brought a better balance, additional interest, and a completeness, without losing the power of the original black and red marks. And that background, sooo yummy. I did have some anticipation as you added the collage for fear it would distract from the already stunning painting. Clearly you know what you're doing, and have good intuition. I'm the novice's novice hobbyist, enjoying dabbling in painting, and have such fun watching these abstract creations materialize and your sharing of your artful technique and thought process. So, again, thank you.

I, too, love your 'signature' scribble collage pieces - and I think they added a nice punch to this piece. Btw - I had a real "wow!" moment when you added that very cool printed accent. Such a genius idea, but so simple!!! I can't believe I had never thought to try that. Very, very effective, what a great design tool! Thanks for sharing! From the title of this episode, I thought you were going to slap some globs of vasoline on the geli plate, then add a layer of acrylic and pull a print! :) I think I would have used the photocopy as a horizontal to contrast the two verticals, but ce la vie! But then you added a 2nd horizontal photocopy collage shape. Enthusiastic about the prints!

Thanks for the idea Don! I thought of making a loose mix of baby oil and vaseline so it is brushable, but that is for a future video. My MO for placing collage is not planned, it is instinctive, and I change my mind often as you noticed!

I love the effects of paint beading up on a gel plate as well, yours is stunning! I love pressing the paper with my hand as well for the most part, I can only use my right hand a my pinky is contracted on the left. Your hands and arms look baby soft and young even though your voice sounds much older. I am always afraid to leave the paper on for 10 minutes because my paper sometimes sticks to the plate and leaves the paint on the plate with the top layer of paper. Do you think leaving it on longer lessens the chances of that happening?
@artwhisperer88
@artwhisperer88 Жыл бұрын
Try to oil your plate once in a while, and it lessens the chance of paper sticking. Also a better paper ( 90 lb upwards) is better to use than thinner lightweight paper. Experiment and see what happens. Good luck and happy printing!

What do you think is the best paper to use that is strong enough to pull off the gelli…and do you suggest hot press or cold press for your work or which one do you like better. ..love your work…
@artwhisperer88

I prefer cold press, it is a beefy strong paper than can withstand pulling.

Hello, when you clean the playe with baby oil, do you just wipe it or do use soap to get rid of the oil? Thank you😊
@artwhisperer88

After wiping the plate with oil just wipe it clean with a rag or a paper towel, no soap needed. Some artists even leave the oily film overnight!

I m a beginner with the gelli plate. Would you please explain the term "oil resist" Does it mean that before applying the black paint you condition the plate with baby oil? The effect is only for black paint or any color as well.
@artwhisperer88
@artwhisperer88 7 ай бұрын
Before you tackle the gelli plate I strongly advise you to practice on a sketchpad first with oil paint vs watercolor or wax crayon or oil pasteks and waterbased paints. The principle is simple. oil and water don't mix and the result is a pretty lace like texture.
