I have used a splatter screen, but it only screened out about half of the splatters. I see the splatter domes introduced here as another thing to take up space & to clean. So, my choice is definitely the pots & pans with higher walls!!

Back in the 70's, my grandmother had a hinged 3 paneled splatter guard that fit around the sides and back of the pan. It was open in the front so you could access the food. Worked really well and kept the rest of her stove clean.

They still have them at the dollar store. It's made of thin aluminum so it's light and foldable and easy store. Wipe down after every use and replace for a dollar when it gets too dirty.

Very informative thank you! I have done all these methods and then some. Done the high-sided pot, use my le Creuset Dutch oven and saucier with their heavy lids and lower heat, or best of all fire up the grill and realize if something is going to splatter like a steak or burger then I should be cooking it on the grill like god truly intended - this is Texas after all!

As for using that dome, it is easier to wipe off the stove than to wash the dome. FYI, I keep a spray bottle with vinegar in it to clean the stove top. It is a cheaper alternative to store bought cleaners. It won't work well on baked on messes but it will work for grease/oil splatter.

I switched from pans to pots for all my stovetop cooking a while ago. It can be a little awkward to get a spatula down in there but not having to clean up spatter is worth it. Didn't know about patting the food down though and I definitely tend to put wet food into hot oil so that is a very helpful tip.

We use ”Fry Wall” splatter guards. They are not quite as flexible as the domes but they are very easy to use, work well, and pack up small when not needed. They look a bit silly but they work. Cooks Illustrated had a review a few years ago which I how I found out about them.

Thank you for the video. I knew all the tips EXCEPT the silicone splatter guard. I think that is a great idea, and may get one. A splatter guard may be a small pain in the neck to deal with, having to quickly lift it up to flip or stir, if your utensils aren't long enough, but it seems that it would be easier to wash than a stovetop and surrounding area! i guess it shows that you are never too old to learn something! An enameled cast iron Wok-shaped skillet is one of the most useful items in my kitchen. Drying the food and keeping the flame down a bit solves the splatter problem almost completely. It does not do Asian flash fry cooking however.

I just use a nice stainless steel saucier instead. High walls keep the oil in and it's thick enough to do pretty much anything my skillet can do, except for the smaller surface area. I use the one by Made In, it works well for this because it has a lot more surface area than other stainless steel sauciers. It's closer to a saute pan than a saucepan.

Why not do both? The drying helps keep the splattering from being so violent and the screen will stop the less violent splattering. One complimenting the other.

Here's what it says on the product's website (I have not personally tried it on a gas cooktop): Does SplatterDom work well if I use a gas stove? Absolutely! SplatterDōm is made out of pure FDA approved food grade silicone and is designed to withstand temperatures of up to 450F. However, your unit will get damaged if the flame is higher than necessary. Flame-kissing is when the flame is coming up too high and as a result goes around and up the side of the pot/pan. When this happens, the temperature of the flame goes well above the 450° temperature limit for silicone. While some people prefer to be extra safe and use a heat diffuser plate, so long as you are careful about your flame (less flame is also more economical and does the job right), you’ll have nothing to worry about. www.splatterdom.com/products/splatterdom?variant=47534050345237
