I remember watching the waves hit on live TV. I was (and still am) in Tokyo, and remember running around my apartment and catching things as they fell during the quake. As bad as the tsunami was, others in the past were much greater. In Kamakura (near Tokyo), there are markers showing how far tsunamis washed into the town over the last 1200 or so years, and the highest of these waterlines is higher than most of the city today. Needless to say, everyone who lives along the coast has an evacuation plan, and usually higher ground is not far away.

an ironic note about some of the defensive sea walls. In some locations, the seawalls were built sufficiently high to keep the tsunami out, but disastrously, the earthquake had caused the ground to subside enough to allow the sea to overtop them anyway.

A similar phenomenon has occoured in Kamaishi Bay (altough there the wave was even much higher). The massive breakwater has prevented the city to be totally wiped off the map like the nearby town of Otsuchi but on the other hand a large part of the flow has been funneled toward the fishing village of Ryoshi, located at the end of narrow fjord in the northern part of the bay. So there the already giant wave has been drastically amplified.

very good, I. am. fascinated by natural disasters, tsunamis being the most, and from what I've observed, we deal with these disasters in 3 different ways or responses. 1st, we fight 2nd we flight 3rd, we freeze fight: This is where we actively... take action against the disaster by either removing it, destroying it, or by changing, altering, or modifying it in some way so as to lessen its damage. this is how we deal with fires. We put it out, or theoretically, an asteroid(NASA's plan to divert it) 2nd flight: This is where there's nothing we can do to stop it but since our technology has given us ample warning g time, we are told, or simply know to just get out of the way by any means. this is how we deal with hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, or wild fires when it's too big to contain 3rd freeze: this is just for lack of a better word (an for the sake of matching the other 2) this is where we can't stop it nor are we giving any warning, or the warning is too little to escape the disasters path. in this case, what we do is provide as much protection to our present location as is feasible, we fortify our buildings, retrograde our homes, and install panic rooms or bomb shelters. This is how we deal with earthquakes or tornadoes. sometimes, these disasters are circumstantial, and we're given the option of partaking in more than 1 of these responses. fight and freeze are engineering at its finest, while flight is science and technology at its finest. the most desired response is fight; to simply stop or lessen the disaster all together, with the least desired being flight since it invokes feelings of helplessness, and the highest potential for the damage being the costliest. what the Japanese have done in the case if tsunamis is simply the most logical reasonable and safest method that - for reasons beyond me - the rest of the world have not taken note of yet: they've incorporated all 3 responeses. they fight it by installing break waters to dampen its destruction and power they flee from it via an early warning system and strict well rehearsed evacuation plans and routes an they freeze, they hunker down by installing sea walls to protect them and their community from its wrath. by utilizing all 3 responses, they've successfully stopped every tsunami from becoming a major disaster for more than 70 years, reducing them in some cases to Lil more than a nuisance. however, this developed a negative effect: the publics overconfidence. using all 3 responses was so successful that the Japanese people eventually came to expect a mitigated tsunami disaster. each time they became a smaller worry an concern, they gradually disregarded evac. plans more an more, which became Lil more than a precaution now, an they increasingly ignored the early warnings an went about their daily routines as normal. keep in mind I'm generalizing, this response by the people was on average, some followed protocol extensively, while others were so overconfident they actually went TOWARDS the sea for a front row seat to the actiona. (some may argue that that is not overconfidence but simply ignorance where my reply is people are not born with ignorance or likewise overconfidence, they pick this behavior up within a society an so is not ignorance since they[mostly the youth] don't know any better an are simply making judgment based on the publics reaction. in conclusion: this is why so many people died despite having the most robust an extensive proactive/protective/ and early warning system any society has ever conceived. Many people simply ignored the warnings an went on with there day, or took minimal action an simply went to there homes 2nd floor which wasn't part of the evac plan. loss of life could have been in the low 100's had every single person remained diligent and acted accordingly. This is simply based off observation I have made on KZbin videos as well as documentaries if anybody lives in Japan and or grew up in japan And has reason to believe this comment is inaccurate or one-sided please I invite you to critique me! criticism is healthy an more importantly a learning process. Hope you all found my comment interesting an will even take it home with them for the next major disaster in YOUR area ❤ ✌️Stay safe everyone

It has become abundantly clear to me that it is an impossible ask to get to see ONE video that actually shows footage of this or the 2004 tsunami that we are actually able to see the waves…. I would understand if these people were having to run to get to higher ground while filming…. But no they are stationary and are incapable of filming with out making every person that gets motion sick want to vomit…. I understand it’s stressful and scary…. Well if you are scared then DONT FUCKING PULL OUT YIUR PHONE AND FILM … I have come to the conclusion that the same people can’t work their cameras here are the same people that take pictures of big foot and are incapable of the concept of focus! I mean there are some ignorant people here in Texas but they are still able to take incredible video of tornadoes while standing in 50/60 mph winds …. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for a human that isn’t moving, there is negligible wind and yet I have yet to find a video (and I have watched a ton) where I actually see the tsunami ….. it’s like they are using their phone like a magic 8 ball…. I’m sorry and I know it’s hella devastating but if you are going to film then post on you tube maybe learn how to use a camera 🤷🏻♀️

What you're looking at in that stolen footage you use, is from the north end of the ten metre high tsunami wall that protects the town, looking down towards the southeast - the port is located in a gap in the coastline that descends down to the sea and without the tsunami wall the entire town and valley behind it would have flooded.

The filming made me noxious. Lots of still shots. And dumb music. I know lets add fun music to a tragedy. Tacky.
