They gave her a beautiful send off. And the episode when she actually dies was the only one in the show's history that ended in a blackout and didn't do the orange screen. That might be a little thing but it made me die inside. OMG 😭😭

I love that the writers made us grow to love Poussey for 4 seasons and suddenly throw her away at the hands of a CO. It's like they're making us feel like we lost someone we knew and loved similarly to the real life families and friends of the victims of police brutality.

Poussey represented countless young people of color who are fundamentally good human beings with bright futures, but are thrown into the heinous system we call "Corrections" for years, for pissant, petty drug offenses. And many of them *don't* survive it. I think that's why her character was chosen for that fate. And I hope that's a big part of the conversation happening now. Whether or not most of the fans will see beyond a simple reaction of, "I loved her! This show sucks now! Waaaaah!" to grasp the bigger, real-life picture remains to be seen. But I absolutely get why they did it. As a fan of the show, it broke my heart! But it's reality.

I don't have ANY sympathy for Bailey. I don't care if he didn't mean it or was one of the "good ones." You see how small Poussey is?! She's a nonviolent offender and had everything going for her. Screw Bailey.
@Croxby18 жыл бұрын
True, however when there is danger to your life (Suzanne), its hard to focus. It was an unfortunate event. Bailey, as well as all the rest of the new guards were untrained, ill equipped, and unprepared for this kind of thing. That was the theme since season 3 when the older guards left. These new ones had no clue how to do their job, because that was the most cost effective way. Bailey IS as much of a victim. He now has to deal with the fact that he killed someone. He was only trying to help, and as we saw in his flashbacks, he truly wanted to treat these women as human beings. He was the only one who didn't want to make their lives horrible every waking moment.
@Pinkie5828 жыл бұрын
+Croxby1 Realize that you said the threat was Suzanne so why does Poussey end up being the one on the ground with the weight of a grown ass man on top of her? She literally can't be more than 120 lbs. She in no way was a threat to Bailey.
@Croxby18 жыл бұрын
Pinkie582 The threat was Suzanne. Then Poussey came up behind him, and at that point, he doesn't have one prisoner to contend with, but a known violent one, and another unknown one. I'm not saying it was right, or proper, but he was untrained. Just out of highschool. You're not mature enough at that age, with no training to handle those type of situations. He didn't want to hurt anyone, but he sure as hell didn't want to let himself get hurt. He had Poussey pinned, and was trying to deal with that situation, but Suzanne kept attacking him, taking his focus off of Poussey. He thinks Suzanne is being taken care of by another guard, so he starts to deal with Poussey, but Suzanne comes back, hitting him, screaming something that he has no context of. Like i said, he's not the bad guy. If anyone is to blame, its the guards who made Suzanne fight, putting her in that state in the first place.
@joshifereverlark86058 жыл бұрын
I agree, I feel like I should hate Bailey but I can't, it was a clear accident and he was untrained. If I'm going to hate anyone its the guards Humps (Made Suzanne fight) and Piscatella, who turned a peaceful protest into a violent event and told Bailey who clearly didn't have proper experience to take control of Suzanne, when she should have been handled by a stronger guard anyway... I get so mad cause Poussey was just trying to make peace and calm Suzanne down, always a lover not a fighter...

Samira's acting during the death scene was very detailed because it didn't focus on her very much. That's exactly why jenji "killed " pussey. In my opinion p's death was so significant because we got to see her grow inside the prison we loved her so when she died we got to feel how it's like losing a person in such an unfair way. That simple moment impacted all of us, it raised awareness on how black people are treated. I think we all kinda related. I'm so proud of oitnb producers not only because they created such an amazing show, but also because they wanted to leave a mark on society and that is remarkable. #rippussey #blacklivesmatter

Thank you a real interview acknowledged my grief for poussey. Flew through the series in the first week and was like now when are we going to talk about this!! Favourite character was hopeful for the cop/guard too and this was just heartbreaking! I'm stoked Cbc got this interview and so quick! I've been rejecting that what I saw actually happened too but haven't been left with much to ponder after watching the end of season 4 because they didn't leave much room to stray from Poussey's passing. Even if people stop watching the show there's still so many elements to season 4 that percolates ideas of activism and I want to say civil rights ?which seems difficult to accomplish in films let alone a tv series. I saw so much relativity in the cafeteria scene where there was no one to remove the body. Like mourning people are challenged with accepting death and react differently augh I was furious but that was so powerful how it made me feel this upset like it was affective in that way.

The people in the comments sound stupid tbh, if they killed off someone the audience hated the impact after the death wouldn't have been crucial enough to justify the events of the last episode. I hated the "plot twist" of OITNB. It's an excellent show, I don't agree at all with the plot choices for the end of this season. She's one of the best characters on the show, by far. OITNB just got a whole lot less interesting.
@JTZFX8 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say that. I think what keeps it interesting is the changes that characters go through. Take Dogget for example. We started of hating her. Or at least I did, and now we almost feel bad for her, but at the same time proud of her because she's in control now. She's changed so much and made herself better. That's what does it for me. I loved Poussey, by far my favourite character, but I think it's worth a character dying to shine a light on a real life issue as well. Plus, Lolly is in some deep shit, that'll be interesting. Also, MARIA, holy balls because she just grew some. And hey, maybe next season we'll finally get Claudette back, if the actress is feeling well enough.

She was my absolute favorite character, but i can't wait to see what she does now. I hope she gets all kinds of amazing jobs because of her stint on OITNB. Possibly a good leading role, and hopefully where she gets to play a lesbian. The only reason i say that last part, is because she was able to play her role, without needing to constantly remind everyone that she was into women. It was underplayed, and really no different than a straight relationship. I think the next step is to have a leading role with a gay character, and simply not make a big deal of it. Just allow it to be a normal relationship that also happens to have same sex partners.

I cried during the whole interview. Poussey Washington was my fav character since season 1, she was so cute and intelligent, I always loved her. Thank you Samira Wiley for giving us 4 amazing years of this beautiful woman, also thank you for explaining us why this happened, now I understand even if I am not American! This violence in America and in the rest of the world needs to stop!!!!!!!!!!!! you are a fantastic actor, I love you!

As a viewers point of view these last two episodes are the best in the entire show. Any show. Just because of how instant it was and how this entire season she was focusing on her future with soso when she was to get out. It was really amazing how they make Bailey kill of poussey and give us mixed feelings like "I can't believe HE killed her" or "he didn't know what he was doing" it goes to show how powerful television (or in this case Netflix...) can be when it comes to get their point across.

ive never cried so much in one scene of a tv show, it was so beautifully done and so delicate exactly how i felt when she described how the fans felt, i was angry and extremely sad

To some degree Samira must be thinking, " jeezuz, Canada!" We really do ask a lot of all of our artists (whichever part of the creative process they're in), in terms of being conscious, aware individuals. I'm glad we're like that, but it can be a bit of an adjustment for an American! ... I just finished the season last night, and was slayed.

Honestly, I'm probably not going to watch OITNB anymore because of this. I'm all for statements, but I absolutely hate when shows and movies build up characters and make you love them as much as you possible can and then slaughter them. I wasn't stoked about the series after season three and I wasn't sitting on the edge of my seat for season 4 and this did it for me. How hard would it have been to have one success story in OITNB? To show that a woman, especially a black woman, can get her life back together after doing time. That would've made a statement too. A positive statement. Which is what this world needs more of. They could've used a different character and the statement they made would've been just as impactful and then they could've made a positive statement on top of that but nah, just kill off arguably the most loved character of the series. I'm tired of this shit. I'm so fucking tired of my favorite LGBT characters getting killed on the shows I watch.
@foreveralo178 жыл бұрын
+openbeats832 op isn't talking about other black people. He or she is talking about having the most loved character killed just as she was making plans for when she got out of prison
@evalynn18638 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, there are other black LGBT female characters on the show that could go on to live successful lives, but they built Poussey up. They showed her light at the end of the tunnel, they showed her having a real shot at a normal, successful life after getting out and then they killed her and that's what pisses me off. They give you hope for these characters that they make you fall in love with and then they slaughter them.
@TomAndJerry878 жыл бұрын
That was the point. This kind of shit happens in real life, where good people who have people who love them and care about them and futures to look forward too are killed for no real reason. You can be pissed about it all you want, but the point was to make a very large impact on the audience and the writing and acting has clearly done it's job well.
@evalynn18638 жыл бұрын
TomAndJerry87 Exactly. This shit happens in real life everyday. This shit is on our TVs everyday. People watch shows and movies to escape reality. Which is why this pisses me off. Because they spent so much time developing her character, showing her characters future just to rip it away. I was already fading away from this and this season actually got me more interested until that shit happened. That was the last straw. Same thing happened for me with Supernatural. I have not loved that show the way I did before they slaughtered the only openly gay female character who happened to be my favorite. The only thing it does is piss me off and make me stop supporting the show because I have enough of my people killed in real life, I don't want them killed in the shows I watch too. The only impact it's made on a lot of people is piss them off so they stop supporting the show.
@TomAndJerry878 жыл бұрын
I don't really think the writers care about pissing a few people off. You can never make everyone happy, and OITNB has always tried to portray real life issues. The ending was harsh and mean because it was supposed to be harsh and mean. We don't agree at all lol.

When I'm sad I watch TV and I was going through a big break down so I turned on OITNB cause it generally makes me happier AND THEN THIS HAPPENED SO I HAD NEVER CRIED MORE
@teralashun86568 жыл бұрын
She is such a great actress. What made it so sad was that I was hoping Bailey would do CPR on her and that Poussey was in jail for weed and not outstanding American policy on weed was different from Germany which is where she basically grew up. She had so much potential and love that yes, it made me so angry and sad that she died.

So you want people to talk about it? It got tears in my eyes and a ball in my throat. Poussey was one of my favorite character because she's a sweet girl, calm, reflected, peaceful and full of love for life and the future. Seeing her die like that was painful but not one second I did think that she's black. Because it doesn't matter to me, she was a beautiful human, it's about that, humanity and not skin color (only stupid people make skin color a thing - it's just as stupid as having people with blue eyes hating people with brown eyes and talk about it all the time. Just like it's eyes, it's skin)

I respect the writers of this show so much for bringing such a big problem closer to people. You see the news and it's so often that you tune it out or you just can't relate. Things become statistics and you don't know the people who make up statistics. Either you do and it's a harsh reality or you don't and you assume you never will. The writers gave us this blatant truth and did to a beloved character. We love Poussey, we've related to her and seen her struggles and her potential and then it's shattered and it's so beautiful and sad and angering and true.
