Straight on with a great picture after how many years?! Are there any date codes on the ICs, for a rough guide to when it was made? I'm always impressed to see how few parts there are in the later colour CRT sets. I started learning (what little I could) from hybrid sets from the 1970s and old copies of Television magazine. The technology really matured, before the cheap imports took over. Was this set made in Ireland? Or would it have been specially made in the UK for the Irish TV system?

Hi Dan, First of all, many thanks for the donation, it's greatly appreciated and will help heat the workshop. I don't know if the set was assembled hee pr in the UK. Sadly, the cheif engineer for thorn Ireland passed away last October, he was 93. I was only made aware after the fact when his daughter got in touch when they were clearing the house. How I would have loved to have chatted with him, so many questions. The set stinks of smoke, so will need a clean out. I'll look for a date code when I'm in there. Thanks again, John Joe.

One thing I have to say is that Thorn's little tellies always seemed to be good. I have about half a dozen of the 14" portables of the same period (can't remember the model No.) remote, non remote, metallic grey, white, two with battery PSU adaptors, even one with the RGB input.

Looks like a tx90 masquerading as a tx9. Looks very much like the tx9 (moviestar) I have next to me. Cracking sets those.

One of the 80s classics. I was going to say would be great for an 80s computer.

Very nice TX90, most common fault on these was dry joints on the two frame output transistors, very strange audio output stage too if you have a look in the service manual.

Super set, I'd of said tx9 too. Must be a very early tx90.

Rub the white chassis down in peroxide. Wrap the set in a clear plastic bag and put it in the sun for a day... hey presto, yellow gone ....

Never really a fan of thorn sets…afaik, the tx9 had a TDA4600 sm controller, didn’t the tx90 have a transformer based power supply ? :…much preferred Philips/ European sets Grundig and the like…
