Those rotten awful McMurdo paxolin valve holders, eh? I've seen them burning up in the line stages in a few sets, but don't remember seeing it in the frame. You'll be replacing that one with a ceramic version, I assume?

12V at 34mA is 0.4 Watts isn't it? For 4 Watts don't you want 12V at 340mA? Or am I just old and confused? Edit: Great tip about drying it out though.

Built one in the 1970s. It worked well but like most TRF regenerative designs the setting needed patience, and since the case was made of simulated hide the hand capacity effects tended to detune it. It ran from a few tens of kHz up to VHF giving good sensitivity on the whip antenna and resolving am fm cw and ssb. The fm was slope demodulated but the sound was nonetheless less pretty good. All in all good fun but needs patience to master the regeneration and hand de-tuning effects.

Excellent work. Have you managed to clear the partial heater short or is it something you'll have to live with? I know TV tubes are almost impossible to fine these days, but is that one you might be able to find if needed?

Don't worry about the xhdata's RDS, in a nutshell the rds (is a gimick on the D808) has no helpfulness for proper proper DXing stations and $hit.

At least you have something, which has to be better than nothing.... Can you inject a 50Hz signal into the FOPT primary? Then if yields something, move backwards to the FOP valve. Let's just hope it's nothing more than a stopped oscillator?

Around 19:38 you say 12v at 35mA is about 4 watts,it's around 0.4 watts, 330/350mA,would be 4 watts.. I want to do this to my TV62 as well. The loose thing on the CRT neck is I think the picture shift magnet. My mistake, ion trap magnet, have a 1970s regunned tube in mine with no ion trap needed!

One thing to check on is the condition of the wiring insulation coming down from the rear mounted controls to the time base chassis. The wiring runs very close to the tin foil screening stuck to the inside of the cabinet. Nothing could possibly go wrong there then!

We had a similar TV to that years ago but it had a cassette player with a flip door instead of slot type (no rewind button). It was badged as a Lloytron which we bought in Spain. Brought it back to the UK, the TV would tune into a picture but just white noise heard on all 4 channels. It had to go to the repair shop to be adjusted internally to work on the UK system. It turned out to be a very expensive black & white TV/Radio/Cassette player in the end!

Ijust bought a Bush Type VHF 102 vintage table radio, and much to my surprise it's receiving Radio Caroline "From the radio ship, Ross Revenge" - It's the first time I've heard Caroline over here in East Yorkshire in decades. It's a lovely old radio and still seems to be perfectly aligned from factory - not a sign of twiddlery or tinkery on any of it, not even any evidence of it ever having been repaired - excellent piece of workmanship if ever I saw one!

I was very disappointed to find such a crappy speaker in such an excellent radio. It mostly produces midtones. Speaker technology has gotten so much better nowadays. I'm looking for a speaker that has a much broader frequency response and fits in nicely.

Many thanks for taking the time to put this video together. The same model is advertised second hand for $250 Australian dollars (around 125 British pounds) would you consider it to be a good starting point for a beginner? Also, what range could I expect on a good day, or night? Will I only hear Aussies, New Zealanders and Indonesians, or can I hope for broadcasts from countries even further away?

It's a shame digital radio mondiale never took off, it would give AM a bit more mileage, and give it more life with a slightly better quality of deliivery on MW. At night to counteract fading and ionospheric disturbances leading to digital dropout and dead air instances, the robust modes within DRM can be used to ruggedise the signal, and improve listenability albeit at the cost of a little bit of quality, but it is still listenable. A missed opportunity.

Hi, thank you for the great video! Looks like that cap had wax in it? I'm wonderihg if your method would work on tar filled can caps? Like to add this if i may, take a dremmel with a 1/16" or smaller drill bit and cut out the top terminal plate. That wsy you can re use the terminal board and solder the cap leads to it then epoxy the terminal board back in! Works great and looks good as well

Hi, I benefited a lot from the video and I encourage you to publish more. I have a radio of the same model and I am trying to fix it. The problem is that the sound is very low. I have done routine maintenance, but the problem has not been solved. Can you help me by providing me with the diagram or the numbers of the capacitors that I should at least replace? Thank you.

Lol, these little radios are really capable, but why do they cost $100? Looks like a toy inside. I like XHData radios, I have two of them, but I guess there’s a reason they’re such a good value for the performance you get from them.

Wow, I must say, as a timid enthusiast, I find it quite unsettling the way you always put the lights off when initially testjng dodgy apparatus. To me, I could not do so, as a bang or a flash would be much more pronounced. And you would not see smoke. All in the name of checking the heaters. You are just waiting to get your head blown off (too close) by exploding caps. Thaf old video on a salora colour portable was typical. I always turn towards the front of the apparatus when doing this. The bravado of just switching on was commendable. I would have cold checked thing like fuses, wiring, switches and heater continuity at least beforehand. I watch all your stuff like this in anticipation of a big bang. The older they are, the worse they can bite. And cause fires. The only fire I would have been seeing would be the bonfire it was sitting on after I burned it due to that woodworm! You and Michael Dranfield bring back the memories 👍👍

I have seen the EF50 used in a few Australian made radios. I have a radio made by KGH Titan using one as an I.F. and reflexed A.F. amplifier. I've also seen one used as an I.F. amplifier in a radio made by a company called Reliance. I've even seen one used as an audio output valve in a tiny 3 valve TRF, which may have been made by KGH Titan. I restored that set, and it worked quite well. I'm sure there are others.
