They had respect because they were adults, on the Andy Williams TV show, on national TV, but yes, even kids would have shown more respect than the culture today demands now...if you can call it culture...of course kids have fine examples to follow today, people yelling and screaming 24/7 at each other on TV news etc. like they never made it out of puberty or junior high...oh...wait...

if the audience had been teens instead of adults, I doubt very much they would have been quiet...on shows like Shindig and other shows, the girls were screaming their heads off, then listened, then in the middle would scream again. Often many posting You've Lost That Loving Feeling video on youtube or something, will put the studio recording over the audio for the video and you'll hear no screaming....neat deceptive trick to the unknowing. BTW, at my age, if my pants were hanging to the ground, I must have lost weight really fast overnight, and I better go shopping for new ones...🤣

I have to say. I am 83 years old and it makes me so happy to see you young people looking back to my youth and realizing that our music was great then and even better today. Thank you. My thoughts. I realise how lucky we were to have singers like Righteous Brothers, Everlys, Roy Orbison, Tom Jones and all the others. We were surrounded by such angel voices, we never knew we were living in a golden age. If you wonder why boomers hate AUTO TUNE so much, this is why. We miss the days when singers could actually sing!

This beautiful melody was composed by multi-Academy Award winning composer Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret for the (1955) prison movie "Unchained." Ten years later in (1965) on the NBC "Andy Williams Show." Bobby Hatfield Counter Tenor of the Righteous Brothers along with the NBC Orchestra gave the world the greatest (live) television performance ever. It was such a great performance it is now considered the quintessential version of them all. Brilliant!

This song was live on the Andy Williams TV show and they asked the audience to remain quiet during filming & save their applause until the end of Bobby Hatfield's performance. That request included his mom who was watching him perform, professionally for the 1st time in person, as part of the Righteous Brothers. His stage anxiety had to be in full throttle but you wouldn't know it by this amazing performance. Bobby & Bill Medley were regulars on the Shin Dig TV show & the younger audience wouldn't stop screaming. On some of the Shin Dig KZbin videos of them they used the recorded version of their song because you could barely hear them singing with all that screaming going on. A Must to view are the videos "You Lost That Loving Feeling", "Soul & Inspiration" & from the Ed Sullivan TV show "You'll Never Walk Alone". Shindig TV Show "Summertime" by Bobby & also from the Playboy After Dark TV show "Brown Eyed Woman" backed up by The Blossoms. Some of the solos with no videos are "Ebb Tide" by Bobby & "I Wanna Make Love to You" with the lead being Bill. The Righteous Brothers have decades of great music and you can't go wrong by listening to any of their music. Great Reaction by you too.

I saw this Andy Williams Show, my favorite version of Unchained Melody. Heard the song for the 1st time in 1960, was recorded that year by 3 artists, Including Les Baxter Band. Who ever records this song, has a hit! As Bill Medley discovered.

@@carolmuszynski931 Bill was joking when he said he didn't know it was going to be a hit. Bill & Bobby sang a solo each, per album. Unchained Melody was to be a solo & both wanted it. They famously tossed a coin & Bobby won. Bill also later joked, if he knew it was going to be a hit, he'd have hired a better piano player (Bill plays piano on the studio recording). After it became a hit, Phil Spector had his name added to the record label, as Producer, but Bill actually produced it (per interviews with both Bill & Bobby).

There were 3 things going on about this performance on the Andy Williams Show that some don't know. 1. Bobby was recovering from a cold or allergies depending on which story you hear. 2. He and Bill had just performed a more upbeat song and he was still slightly out of breath. 3. His parents were in the audience so he was nervous about sounding good. Audiences on live tv shows were different depending on the show but for the most part people tended to sit quietly until the performance was done.

I've heard some modern singers recently that have come close to a perfect performance singing this song. No has the passion that Bobby did, though. He didn't just sing it, he felt every word. Bobby was a countertenor. He could sing from baritone up to what can only be called high soprano. There was no falsetto, even the last note. Bobby will always own this song.

This came from a picture named Chained. It was about a prisoner who was trying to decide whether to try to escape because he missed his wife so much or do his time. A flip of a coin between Bobby and Bill Medley would determine who would sing it and Bobby won. Later Bill Medley said he was glad Bobby sang it because it was meant for Bobby to sing it.

The people were quiet because he was on The Andy William's Show and Andy was himself considered a class act. The type of people who went to see his show were those who were wealthy and upper class. The men put on their best suits and ties and the women wore their finest dresses. The audience was quiet because this was performed on a television show, not a concert stage ... it's a pretty fair bet there was an electric sign with one word "SILENCE" glowing on it. Alternately, there was also a sign that lit up saying "Applause". They wanted the 70,000,000 TV viewers to enjoy the performance. Can't really say the same for when The Ed Sullivan Show had The Beatles on; no sign or any threat could've kept those girls from going bananas! But they did play a song that made the gals so quiet that you could've heard a pin drop. Check it out?

The Andy Williams Show- Episode #4.5 Episode aired Oct 25, 1965 Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher counter tenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song. *In Nov. 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63. The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt (actually calling DJs telling them to play “Hung On You” not “Unchained Melody “)as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side. * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and he left. He said, 'No, I can do it better.' And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song." * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof." Hatfield’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” although not the original, is the ‘gold standard’.

It was written for the 1955 movie, "Unchained". It's a prison movie, about a prisoner wondering if his love will be there for him when he gets out. When Bobby Hatfield recorded it and made the song famous in the mid 60's (when the Viet Nam War draft was happening), it was sort of appropriated to be the going to war theme song.
@thomastimlin1724

I will defend Ruth here...the song did become one of those that transcends the movie it came from and can be applied/adapted into many situations and time periods, so being about a drafted soldier in Vietnam in the 1960's or any other war is very plausible and likely. Because the song is timeless. Certainly the most useless application was hijacking it for the movie Ghost. It is much more valuable when applied to real life situations that matter more than Hollywood making big money off of a movie.

the song was written for a movie in 1955 called Unchained, about guys in prison, one wanting to get out to see his wife. Some guy with a guitar [in prison?] sang this song with only guitar as part of the story. Many have recorded, it since 1955, none have come close to Bobby's performance here. Not even Elvis in my opinion...You don't need to "Dissect" this song. What you need to dissect is real talent, good tone, and real musicians on real instruments, and how we have lost that forever because the music industry found a cheaper way to produce pop music without having to pay human beings to play instruments, or even be talented enough to sing on pitch let alone with style and grace...even the Beatles and Motown and Disco etc. used orchestras etc. the string arrangement takes you to new heights and to the heavens behind Bobby's heavenly vocal performance.

It was Live Tv! They had to keep quiet until the end of the performance....then clap! Now a days...everything is pre-recorded!

The song was written in 1955 by north and zafet for a little known movie about a prison inmate. This is a live perfofmance and Bobby' s rendition whicn is not the same as his recorded version. The best part is he had a ra ge of almost 5 octives hence the sound

Be careful about getting caught up in generalizations about the "time". There was a big difference between live performances at concerts and live performances on TV shows, in general. Yes, TV shows were more likely to have the audience sitting quietly through the song and showing their appreciation after, but not always. Though you were more likely to see audiences jumping around and screaming with rock performers on TV, there are TV show performances by the Righteous Brothers where you can hear the young girls screaming. It also depended on whether it was a mixed audience or primarily younger people.

You have to remember this live performance was on a TV show, The Andy Williams show. The audience had to remain quiet in such a setting. It was not a concert. There were plenty of live concerts that were totally wild. But not in a TV studio

The words of the song "time goes by so slowly" had a special meaning to the original version. I was written for a movie in 1955 call Unchained, in which the sing was incarcerated and waiting to get out. The words make sense that way. Please react to Ebb Tide by Bobby Hatfield (Righteous Brothers) to hear his incredible voice again. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6vQq2yKjcaaoqs

I am going to suggest you try some accapella Maybe some Home Free or Some Voiceplay or that Internet sensation The Wellermen. Try the Wellermen Misty Mountains.... Try for Voiceplay "Hall of the Mountain Kings" and for Home Free you might try oh really any of their songs, though I really do love their version of Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits. If you don't cry when listening to it.. well

It is a mistake to say that this is a time when audiences sat quietly in their seats while the musicians played. Surely you have heard of a band named "The Beatles". Their first trip to the US was in 1964.

When you have an audience that yells and screams no one can tell how bad the singer is this way they can hear every word and it’s perfect and it’s a live television show

This broadcast was recorded live in 1965, and the video quality is amazing for that era. Broadcast cameras were obviously of good quality, but the viewers' TV sets were not. Color TV was a novelty, and very expensive. Many viewers watched this in B&W -- if they had a TV at all! Most viewers' received TV signals with an outdoor antenna...with a wide range of outcomes! At its best, TV sound quality was poor. In spite of these primitive conditions (judged by today's standards) we were THRILLED with this magic entertainment medium!!
