This is what’s great about the portal. It gives us a chance to see guys like Gabriel who is now undefeated, in the playoff, and damn near won a Heisman trophy! And next year John Mateer will be a Sooner, play in the sec, be in the playoff, and actually WIN the 8th Heisman trophy for Oklahoma! At least, that’s the word on the street……

Amen. i keep thinking of how the Packers have done it (and i'm not a Packer fan), but having a dude learn the system as a backup before getting his chance works. Hell, it worked for Mateer sitting behind Cam Ward. Redshirt him, and set him up for success, he has a ton of talent

His style is similar to Hawkins.. I hope Hawkins stays into 2026 because a year developing with Arbuckle and Kuceyeski and learning behind Mateer.. let him gain a little weight and continue to develop not only his passing accuracy but also just decision making.. Hawkins could be insane. Our schemes were horrifying, our WR’s were all hurt, and our OL was all hurt aka abysmal. Hawkins with good coaching, much improved OL and good WR core?? So pumped for the next couple years. Just gotta keep these young studs in Norman

I'm glad Mateer is coming here and I don't know what OU had to pay him but it's going to be worth every penny. Not paying Dillon Gabriel whatever it took to come back to OU for his final season cost us possibly a chance at making the playoff. I think without question if Gabriel comes back OU beats Tennessee, S. Carolina, Missouri and Ole Miss and you can make the argument they could have beat TX. It just goes to show that in this era with the NIL you had better damn sure not be cheap.

The fanbase is so obsessed with hawkins for NO reason . He loves OU, but he's not and won't be ready. it's insane... its like they forgot about South Carolina and how we lost the game in 5 minutes of 3 offensive possessions inside our own 30-yard line.. And now that we have a new OC with a new offensive system, verbiage, scheme, that he has to learn, along with a new QB coach that he can't physically practice with until spring ball... but you guys (fans) think he's ready to be the starter... That makes 0 sense, guys Its Mateers job for 1 if not 2 years and then Hawkins the next 2.. if you cant see that you dont know or understand football. And no, I dont dislike Hawkins, i hope the kid shines and is a better Kyler Murray when it's his time

I’m worried about his mechanics. I had never seen a down of Mateer so I watched the entire Washington game last night. He reminds me of Trevor Knight. He has an extremely fast release, but it’s very jerky. He also throws every ball side arm like you would on a screen trying to get around a defender or a shortstop trying to turn two except it’s every throw. You said he had a great deep ball, that’s not what I saw. Because of his arm angle it can get pretty flat sometimes. He makes some decent throws but was also pretty inaccurate at times, especially on the run. This is where this all this could be a problem in the SEC. D Lineman are much bigger in the SEC and I think he’ll have many more balls batted down. The corners and safeties are better in the SEC and a lot of those inaccurate balls that were just incomplete or even caught will get picked off. One of the biggest problems I see with his arm angle is when he scrambles or rolls left with intentions to pass. When a right handed QB rolls left they really have to turn those hips to get anything on it and be accurate, when you throw side arm you have to do it even more. When he ran left not only did he swing his hips and upper body he had to swing his lower body leaving him very vulnerable. If he’s being chased and gets hit in that position he’ll either separate his shoulder, break his collarbone, or crack a rib. He’s an elite running QB, which also worries me in the SEC for injuries, but I think his passing ability might be a little exaggerated by the competition he’s played and the amount of short throws. I’m not trying to kill the guy either, I hope I’m wrong, but I also saw a bunch of mental mistakes and horrible decisions. I hope I’m wrong but fans need to understand this isn’t a Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts, or Dillon Gabriel and the type of guys we’ve received in the transfer portal in the past. I think he’s much closer to a Trevor Knight than to those guys.
@danielgraham7952
@danielgraham7952 4 күн бұрын
you may be right on some things. i think he's a DG quality guy. how confident coaches are in Hawkins will alter how much they run Mateer, and in what situations. remember how they ran DG very little in year one but much more in year 2 when JA was backup. it was lebby as OC for both years. i think the OLine will be a problem again next year at times, so he'll be scrambling a lot. im curious to see how often he runs v passes while scrambling. seems like he has a good feel for either, which is exciting. but yes, increases injury chances.
