I’m worried about his mechanics. I had never seen a down of Mateer so I watched the entire Washington game last night. He reminds me of Trevor Knight. He has an extremely fast release, but it’s very jerky. He also throws every ball side arm like you would on a screen trying to get around a defender or a shortstop trying to turn two except it’s every throw. You said he had a great deep ball, that’s not what I saw. Because of his arm angle it can get pretty flat sometimes. He makes some decent throws but was also pretty inaccurate at times, especially on the run. This is where this all this could be a problem in the SEC. D Lineman are much bigger in the SEC and I think he’ll have many more balls batted down. The corners and safeties are better in the SEC and a lot of those inaccurate balls that were just incomplete or even caught will get picked off. One of the biggest problems I see with his arm angle is when he scrambles or rolls left with intentions to pass. When a right handed QB rolls left they really have to turn those hips to get anything on it and be accurate, when you throw side arm you have to do it even more. When he ran left not only did he swing his hips and upper body he had to swing his lower body leaving him very vulnerable. If he’s being chased and gets hit in that position he’ll either separate his shoulder, break his collarbone, or crack a rib. He’s an elite running QB, which also worries me in the SEC for injuries, but I think his passing ability might be a little exaggerated by the competition he’s played and the amount of short throws. I’m not trying to kill the guy either, I hope I’m wrong, but I also saw a bunch of mental mistakes and horrible decisions. I hope I’m wrong but fans need to understand this isn’t a Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts, or Dillon Gabriel and the type of guys we’ve received in the transfer portal in the past. I think he’s much closer to a Trevor Knight than to those guys.
@danielgraham79524 күн бұрын
you may be right on some things. i think he's a DG quality guy. how confident coaches are in Hawkins will alter how much they run Mateer, and in what situations. remember how they ran DG very little in year one but much more in year 2 when JA was backup. it was lebby as OC for both years. i think the OLine will be a problem again next year at times, so he'll be scrambling a lot. im curious to see how often he runs v passes while scrambling. seems like he has a good feel for either, which is exciting. but yes, increases injury chances.
