Ryo Hirakawa captured pole for the 2nd race in a row. Many thought that it was his race for the taking, but Super Formula certainly isn’t a walk in the park to win.
In P2 for the start of the race was Ritomo Miyata, who was standing-in for regular driver 3-time 24 Hours of LeMans winner Kazuki Nakajima. In P3, was Sacha Fenestraz-in just his 2nd Super Formula race.
Hirakawa got off to a solid start, but as expected because of all the young-blood behind the wheel for this race due to the ill-effects of COVID-19, an accident pursued, which saw both Sacha Fenestraz and Tadasuke Makino retire from the race. Several drivers who weren’t involved in the 51-lap race crash, took full advantage of the situation. So as the safety car was deployed with the yellow flag out, in P2 was Sho Tsuboi, teammate 2-time Super Formula champion Hiroaki Ishiura, Nick Cassidy up 11 places, and in P5 Yuhi Sekiguchi.
After the race re-started, several cars pitted for the mandatory tire change as the window allowed for them to do so. Hirakawa was not one of them. He didn’t change tires until lap 13, which played a role in where he would finish the race. Tsuboi was able to pass Hirakawa, who was on cold tires, directly after Hirakawa came back onto the track.
Ishiura and Nick both continued to keep their foot on the gas to try to build up a good enough lead to be able to pit and come back onto the track in the top spots. Ishiura stretched a pit stop out until lap 31. After he came back out onto the track on cold tires, Tsuboi used his OTS to get around him without much of a fight. After Ishiura’s tires heated up a bit, on lap 35, he tried to reciprocate, but Tsuboi fought him off brilliantly-another important turning point in the race.
On lap 49, Nick Cassidy and Yuji Kunimoto both pitted. Nick’s tire change took just a couple seconds longer than he probably would have liked, so Tsuboi and Ishiura were able to stay in front of Nick, who came out on the track in P3, with Hirakawa shortly behind in P4. Nick used his OTS to try to catch up to Tsuboi and Ishiura, while keeping Hirakawa at bay. That is how the race would finish.
Tsuboi captured his maiden Super Formula victory in a very dramatic race. In P2 was Ishiura, P3 Nick, P4 Hirakawa, P5 Sekiguchi, P6 Naoki Yamamoto. The top 10 finishers pick up points this season, and the top 5 finishes will be counted towards championship points.
