Billy Joel’s father lives in Vienna. When he went to visit, he saw an old lady who was sweeping the street and was surprised to find out that was her job. In Vienna, old people are useful. In America, you squeeze all your usefulness into your youth and old people are thrown away. He decided to use “Vienna” as a metaphor for old age. Don’t rush, old age waits for you

Good lord. I'm glad this hit someone the same way it's always hit me over the years. Sometimes we may displace a part of us but we can't ever forget. This song won't ever let me lose that part of me. ❤ my #1 song of all time.

I’m not the type to outwardly cry at something. I feel things deeply, but the crying just rarely triggers. That being said, Vienna makes me ugly cry every single time. It’s so powerful. It’s way too short 😭😭😭 The only thing wrong with it. I’m part of the listen twice crew - stayed for second listen! You’re so sweet, and I’m happy to have found your channel. I appreciate your think out loud session, your philosophic break. :) Subbed ❤

It's great how a song like this links people. Your reaction to it was similar to mine... a 38 year old in the middle of the UK.

You are so right on everything! I appreciate your passion for life and music. I'm playing this song for my Daddy/Daughter Dance at her wedding. It's an awesome take on life. I hope she will wait on Vienna? Your awesome appreciation for the important things in life have touched my heart brother ! Thank you and keep up your good work! I can relate. Thank you so much!

This song is about perfectionists. They are never happy with their performances. They get an A- on a test, which is a great score, but they wanted the A. They work so hard on whatever they do that they never have time to enjoy life.

To me, i always thought it was about a kid who matured faster than other kids because of circumstances or how life can be so hectic that we can't find peace. As i grow up more, i find new perspectives for the song, which is what music is supposed to do, no?

@@thereject505 Mozart, Hayden, Strauss and others all were from Vienna, Austria. They were prodigies of classical music. This song, I believe, is about child prodigies. This imposes a responsibility to live up to their talents and not waste them. Also, the perfectionist is in the line, "You can see when you're wrong, but cant always see when your right". Their lives as a result are more stressful and demanding with lots of practice and no time for pleasure. The reference to Vienna is great writing by Billy Joel.

this has been my favorite song for over 30 years... i stumbled upon your reaction video and fell in love with your sincerity. I always felt this song described me back then, and here I am, living in the regret of the past. It's so wonderful to see a young guy understand and appreciate the meaning of this genius song. Much love!!!

My man… Im watching this on tv but had to switch to my phone so I could leave a comment. Cuz, I love you right now. Wait, your running it back?? So sick!! Damn dude, i envoy your ability to let yourself go like that. My dad played the guitar and few years ago I was at his place with his girlfriend (painful enough) and he played this on the keyboard. I never heard this song and to watch him do that I was so proud and blown away. I fell in love with this song and truthfully I never told anyone how it made me feel. Since that moment, I tried to learn the piano and play this song. Well… I suck but I still love this song. This and New York State of mind are the 2 Billy Joel songs and if you haven’t heard the the first song, make sure you do so. You’ve made my evening my friend. Thank you so much

We love you Rick! Love your point of view and seeing you understand, and not only gain from…but also add to the meaning of all these songs. Songs that (for the most part) I know…and I believe that these songs are written about, and cause you to relate to, and get answers to the questions of…the meaning of life. Life, which as we all know is full of ups and downs, lefts and rights, happiness and laughter to immense pain and suffering, love to learning the hard way over and over, etc…and these great songs are written about life and the questions we have about how in the hell to get thru it. For a 24 year old you are wise beyond your years bro…and the way you relate to music and (essentially) people and the things we go thru…has a notable effect on how those of us who have happened across your path navigate this challenging adventure called life. I appreciate you for what you do and who you are. Stay magical and beautiful my friend…my brother.

I discovered your channel right when you started talking about the passing of your dad, and that's exactly the time when my stepdad, who was like a real dad to me, died. It was comforting to me to see another grown man dealing with the emotions I was going through at the time and carrying on and being productive and keeping it together. You being open about what you went through last year helped me out, and I really appreciate it. I wrote a poem about my stepdad that I'd like to share with you if you see this comment and would like to read it.

Please check out "Fare Thee Well" by the Indigo Girls. When My grandmother died, whom I was very close with and taught me all about my Native heritage, this was my song to her. I"m a singer, but I can never get through this song without crying. It's truely amazing and has many different meanings.
