I try to be as broad as possible in this video explaining how to put a pendulum in beat because: 1: Many variations exist in escapement construction. 2: Crutch designs can vary widely 3: Newer clocks allow beating setting to be easier for the user, while old clocks are generally more difficult. 4: All youtube viewers seem to labor under the impression that instructions for THEIR SPECIFIC CLOCK is available and that I know telepathically what their clock is. 5: If you're in a hurry, clock repair is not for you, but if you don't want to watch the whole video, at least watch the chapters beginning at 5:51, 10:57 and 16:06 This video is more about HOW to set the beat, rather than explicit instructions for a specific clock. And yes, I speak slowly and with pauses, if this taxes your patience, you have no business trying to attempt doing anything to a clock, leave that type of work to someone else.🙂

Thank you for taking the "time". Clock movements look so delicate and intimidating to noobies like me and every time it goes out of beat by somebody moving it, it means a trip into town and a bill that gets expensive. At least this adjustment amongst the myriad levers and wheels is simple, straightforward, logical and something I can do ! Thanks again for the clear explanation !

Your explanations were clear and easily understood. However, with the other clock(s) ticking in the background it was hard to discern the "tempo" after adjusting the crutch wire. Thanks for posting.

Thank you! Very helpful in adjusting a Mantel Clock made by Plymouth/Seth Thomas Clock Co. We bought it at a yard sale for $10. We knew the local High School needed one for a prop in an an upcoming play. The clock didn’t work and we didn’t think it needed to run for the play. However I needed to see if there was anything I could do to make it run. I made it run before seeing your instructional video but knew something was wrong. I adjusted the Crutch towards the front on a hunch after visual inspection but this video was super in adjusting the rhythm. Your hand adjustments were much clearer then how you described the use of the tool. My Crutch was on the opposite side as yours from the pendulum rod, so I reversed the bend directions and that worked GREAT! (Now do I get reimbursed for the clock purchase or just loan it to them? 🤔) Thank you again!

LOVE all the detailed information about the parts and what they’re called and I will absolutely watch more of your videos. Because I got so much information out of your video and want to see you make more I would like to encourage you in doing these and possibly other types of videos but wanted to point out a couple of things that would make them even better: Your use of a pointing device is Exactly what’s needed to illustrate what you’re describing and to that end is very helpful but it’s not 100% consistent and there are some spots where you describe a part but don’t point to it and while it’s obvious to you it’s not obvious to the viewer amongst the many other parts inevitably in the shot. I must repeat some of the other comments that have said that it is difficult to discern the beat you’re talking about with all the other clocks running in the background (which don’t sound all that much in the background) and it is very difficult to discern which beat you’re talking about especially if you’re not looking directly at the screen at that moment. The music playing in the background oddly enough is actually helpful if it were the only other sound because it would give you something to put the beat against to see whether it’s going faster or slower as you adjust - it if that makes sense. I thought at first I would be distracted by the music but it was actually helpful. If you are going to make more videos, which I do hope you do, perhaps invest in a stand for your camera or phone or whatever you’re using and free both your hands to work or, if you’ve got someone who wouldn’t mind holding the camera for you… but at least get yourself a stand or a POV camera strapped to your forehead. The demonstration clocks that you have rigged up are perfect and I would be interested to see demonstrations on even more different types of clocks and obscure ones because it seems like you may have access to some of those. I find clockwork fascinating but I don’t really know anything about it and your video is extremely helpful. After watching it I was able to repair and set running in perfect time a pendulum wall clock that has been in my family for quite some time but has not run for the past few years, so thank you.

Thanks for showing how the stem of the pendulum actually connects to the spring steel at the top of a time only Seth Thomas school house regulator. In tinkering with regulator clocks over the years, that stem sometimes disconnects while the clock is up, assembled, and running, and you can't see what connects to what. Adjusting the fob to get it to time right, , Boom! the whole pendulum assembly falls to the bottom of the clock. So, then what? I've figured iout how that all goes together thanks to this vid.
@JoeKaye-hn5dt
@JoeKaye-hn5dt 5 жыл бұрын
btw, on that subject, one of my (cheap, copy) regulators, 40 years ago, the spring steel broke in half. I took it out, and for lack of a replacement part, I, placed a segment of wide rubber band in there, and hung the pendulum shaft from that rubber band. That clock still keeps very good time!. I think I was lucky.

The other clocks running in the background create confusion for "tick tock" detection/characterization on the clock you're adjusting. Otherwise, good video. Thanks for posting.
@lawebbermusic6991
@lawebbermusic6991 2 жыл бұрын
Should not the escapement wheel rotate the same amount on each of the tick and the tock - when the pendulum moves to the right and the left. One end at least of the pallet shaft is movable to adjust this. On your Seth Thomas the rotation looks quite uneven. You might find it performs better if you adjust this.
@okbridges
@okbridges 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the adjustment you speak of is called drop, or making the drop even. Sometimes, and heavy emphasis on the word sometimes, mearly adjusting the distance of the pallet arbor from the escape wheel can adjust the drop. What this adjustment typically does is adjust the depth of the escape wheel on the pallets. Adjusting drop requires changing the distance between the pallets and the depth. The two adjustments have to be done at the same time, or poor results will follow

I just oiled and greased my grandfather clock. I WAS HOPING THAT the chimes would work. The clock was working fine and then it stopped chiming. When it tries to chime it is like there is not enough momentum for it to continue. If I pull on the quarter chime weight of course it will chime. When it does actually complete a chime it is very slow. I have to take the working out of the clock again i figured I should reclean it. FOLLOWING THE VIDEOS ON UTUBE BY RHJ GOLD. Any advice?

You might need to make a new pendulum rod for it to make it longer, or the pendulum bob is not the original and is too light. Another possibility is the escapement is worn/misadjusted and more than one tooth is passing by .

If you look, you'll see a j-shaped lever near the shaft that carries the minute hand. This lever is lifted by an l-shaped wire attached to the minute hand shaft. You will need to adjust these parts to get the striking to occur right at the hour. I would start with the L-shaped lifting piece on the arbor. Watch the mechanism cycle a few times to understand what is goin on and which way to carefully bend the L-shaped wire to trigger the striking later. The adjustment will be very small.

Great video. Thank you very much to share your knowledge. I have a question: the german type small movement that (where you put in beat moving the anchor in the clutch instead of bending the crutch) also has a way of adjusting the anchor up and down by adjusting the back cock (I this that's the correct name); in this case how do you put it in beat when you have 2 settings that must work together? Thank's in advance
@okbridges
@okbridges 2 жыл бұрын
The beat and escapement depth are two separate adjustments The escapement depth is adjusted by loosening the two screws and moving the bridge or cock up and down. Escapement depth takes more skill to adjust and also requires considerably more explanation. For most newer clock, such as the German movement shown, the escapement is adjusted at the factory and does not need further adjustment. If the bridge/cock needs removed to bush the pivot, a mark should be made before removal on the back plate to get it back in the correct position. If the escapement needs adjusted because of pallet wear, the pallets will also need reconditioning and adjustment, or replacement. As stated earlier, the beat and escapement depth are two separate adjustments. If required, the escapement is adjusted first; after the escapement is correctly set-up the beat can be adjusted. Escapement adjustment should be done with the movement out of the case, with the spring unwound. Beat adjustment is done after the movement is cased up and is one of the final adjustments made. It is not uncommon to have to readjust the beat anytime a clock is moved, or to compensate for the case settling on soft surfaces such as carpet, etc. The escapement, however, will not need readjustment.

I have a drop dial clock over 100 years old that looks like it has been serviced in the last few years (nice and clean movement and clean oil in places where old needs to be) but it keeps stopping. I have adjusted the crutch so that it is in beat when started, but after between 2 -15 minutes it starts to go out of beat slightly and eventually stops. The escape wheel teeth all look the same, the pallets don't appear worn and nothing seems to be rubbing, and the loop around the crutch is not pinching. The longest I've had it going before stopping is 30 minutes. It is wound up and the spring looks intact. Any ideas?

There's a few ways you can fix the anchor to the arbor. I suggest removing the assembly from the movement in all cases, it can usually be taken out without disassembling the movement. You can use loctite to secure the anchor to the arbor. I think it is loctite 503 you would want to use other option is to drill and tap the anchor for a small set screw. Third option is to solder the anchor.

@@vilas4265 Look carefully at the escape wheel teeth and see if one or more are bent. The teeth can be straightened back out with care, but this is usually best done with the wheel out of the movement. Also, the verge pivots are often in adjustable arms and may have gotten moved nearer the escape wheel, this could be less likely, so check for bent teeth first.

@okbridges
@okbridges Жыл бұрын
Watch the escape wheel thru at least 1 full revolution and make sure the escapement is not skipping teeth. How much room do you have in the case for a longer pendulum? It is possible the pendulum you have is not original and is too short. Sometimes, if the pendulum is too light it will also run too fast. Proper bob weight is generally 3.5 to 5 oz. Additionally, and I am guessing the clock has a recoil escapement, sometimes the escapement can be so out of adjustment that the clock runs fast. In such cases the pendulum makes very short swings and the pallets barely impinge on the escape wheel teeth. Escapements in this condition are very close to skipping teeth and risk damaging the tooth tips.

I'm pretty sure Timesavers carries it. I got it from R&M Imports but they are out of business now.

I pretty much boogered up my crutch today. I’m just not sure which one to select. I have a Seth Thomas shelf clock make roughly 1890’s all. It’s a front door affair. Is there anywhere that it tells you?

How many tick tocks per minute for typical clock? Mine is a Black Forest cuckoo clock.
@okbridges

Without counting gear teeth and knowing other things about your clock, all I can offer is a guess based off most modern cuckoo clocks. 6800-6900 BPM (beats per hour, one beat is one tick) is common.

When my regulator does that I level it. Often solves the problem. Check to make sure the stuff along the length of the pendulum is vertically centered. Finally, make sure the weight fob is at the correct height. Placed too low is in my experience the most common problem.

For me the escape gear will not advance. The verge enters cog on the escape but the escape fails to advance. This clock had been running the day it stopped, could I Have wound it 2 tight?

Does the escape wheel turn when you manually move the verge back and forth?

@@okbridges when I put pressure on a side cog it will turn and tick, if I put the key in the time spring and put pressure on it and start the pendulum it will tick but once stopped it begins to fail. Could it be I wound the spring 2 tight? It had worked from Friday morning to Noon on Saturday. Weird. Thank you for commenting.

Your clock needs to be taken apart and cleaned. No such thing as a spring wound too tight. Maximum power output of the spring happens when it is fully wound. I suggest you look at the video series I did on a Gilbert clock to see what is involved in taking a movement apart. Before I rebuilt the Gilbert clock it behaved just as yours does. It now runs up to 11 days per winding.

@@okbridges fantastic. After reading your last reply I went to the clock and "helped" it move forward in time by using the key. It now has been running flawlessly again but I expect it to fail. Knowing that it needs to be taken apart and cleaned I will use your video and slowly move through the steps. I appreciate you and your follow ups. These clocks are fun and interesting but expensive to take in to fix in my area so to learn to do it yourself is the way to go. Thank you.

Oh dear it is not a verge escapement. What you are referring to are called pallets. They are both anchor escapement because they both have recoil.
@okbridges
@okbridges 2 жыл бұрын
In the standard nomenclature of American clocks, the assembly made up of the strip pallet, the saddle, and the crutch is known as the verge.

You will need to count gear teeth from the center arbor to the escape wheel, count wheels and pinions. Then use the formula: Center wheel teeth x fourth wheel teeth x escape wheel teeth/fourth pinion teeth x escape pinion teeth = r, r x 2= BPH To find pendulum length: BPH/60= BPM. 141120/BPM squared= theoretical pendulum length in inches.

I have a Ridgeway model 225, date 8/27/86, Movement CC-1161-853-114-CM. It will not stay in beat, I have found that the anchor escapement is loose on the shaft. I can rotate the anchor slightly and it will run just fine, then all of the sudden it will slip and get out of beat again. What is an easy acceptable way to secure it to the shaft? Thank you Hager Hay
