Wow. My stepdaughter got me a piece of Spanish moss, I'm treating it with care. However, knowing now that the moss is a bromiliad, I'll take extra care, thanks much for the information, it's great to be educated. I'm from the Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago.

Thank you for good advice. what is the reason for spots on the leaves - is it because they should be watered and not misted? Should they be watered in the centre of the bromeliad, or at the base of the plant. Thanks for your help.

+Barbara Baines Most plants pull water using their root system so water their first and then if the plant has a cup you can water there too. The spots I think you're referring to our the leaf patterns and those are just how the plants grow. Hope this helps!

Perhaps banana peel fertilizer made by adding water to chopped up banana peel left to ferment in a closed container , in shade with stirring up ever other day, after about a month , filter it and use the diluted liquid to spray on plant.
