I picked up 10 reduced to £1.50 a plant at a local garden centre as they were all dying off, but because of watching your video I could see they at least had a couple of pups on each plant, now I’m running out of pots 😂
@beatablack76823 жыл бұрын
I did exactly the same experiment last year:) and my conclusion is: if you want bushier and bigger plant leave the pops on the mother plant. The babies grow bigger and faster on their mum and she may even produce more babies later on - like mine did. I don't know about flowering yet, but my guess is that the mother plant will flower quicker as the kids grow faster on her :)

Thank you!! I got one as a gift today, even though I have a lot of plants I never had one of the Bromelids before. She is beautifully orange red, but her pot is super tightly packed in wet coconut and it did seem a bit suffocating in there. So I am glad my intuition was right. She already shoots out pups on all sides. I put her next to my orchids that also love bright light but nothing direct. I hope she and her babies will do well.

They are an epiphyte which means they don't take up nutrients from the soil but from the air and moisture in the centre of the plant, the roots are just to anchor the plant in the pot so it;'s not too essential to worry about the soil really. I wouldn't worry too much.

@HouseplantHacks4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary, You can't really damage them from spraying water onto the leaves too much, as long as your water is not too hard, if you use rainwater or deionised water its even better. you can spray them multiple times per day and it will benefit the plant as you are adding humidity around the plant which will help it stay happy and healthy.

Misting with water is a tricky subject, the water will evaporate quite quickly depending on where you live and how warm/humid it is. Misting is only benefitial while it keeps the plant slightly wet, once it dries out there are no additional benefits so to keep the benefits of misting constantly you would need to mist several times per day, which isn't really practical, a humidifer will create a better environment but at a cost.

If I cut the scorched part from a plant which has become burnt, will that leaf continue to grow? Would I be better to just tear off and throw away the burnt leaf?
@HouseplantHacks3 жыл бұрын
It's up to your really, if it's just the tip of the leaf then cutting it off would be fine, it will still be a useful leaf, if you have a large part of it that is burnt then you might be better off just cutting the whole leaf off, it will push out a new one to replace it in time.

Hi Linda, Bromeliads are Epiphytes so technically they don't need soil at all, in the rainforrest they will cling on to trees and find little crevices to grow in, they don't take their water and feed in via the roots the way other plants do, they have a reservoir in the centre of the leaves where rainwater and other nutriants will go in. Hope that helps, Andy

@HouseplantHacks4 жыл бұрын
The small black dots could be fungus, this can happen from the insect damage. What you have done sounds like the right thig to do, if you can remove the webs and any insects you can see whith a cotton bud with neem oil on this will help, check the underside of the leaves and all the small joints between the leaves.

Hello Dear, the soil mix you are using is basically washed construction sand, Am I right, or it's some thing else... 2ndly we need to keep the soil moist or let it dry out a little to water again... Last but not the least, one grower conveyed me that we can easily grow this in pure cow dung compost...! Need your valuable suggestions on this plz...
@HouseplantHacks4 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes the horticultural grit is basically building grit sand which has been graded for the smallest sizes, washed and is lime free. I would let it dry out a little in between waterings. Pure cow dung without rotting down might be too strong to grow in, here in the UK we would normally let it rot down for 6 months to a year before we use dung on our gardens so it still has benefitial nutriants but is not too strong that it can burn the plants. Good luck.

Can you update how these three offshoots are doing ??
@HouseplantHacks4 жыл бұрын
Sure, I can do an update but it wasn't too long ago that made that video and they have only pot on a leaf or two since. :-)

So do we add some fertilizer to the water which we then spray on the leaves?
@HouseplantHacks10 ай бұрын
You can add a very dilute amount but they don't require much fertilizer at all.

i have some bromeliads. guzmania and imperial silver plum. they all got sunburned recently. if they are on their way to death, will they produce pups even if their death is premature?
@HouseplantHacks3 жыл бұрын
it's a possibility but if they are on their way out quickly its unlikley that they will have time to produce pups. All you can do is keep them out of the sun, give them a little water and hope for the best.

What type of bromeliad do I have that has thorn type leaves and gives me a rash every time I touch it. Also am I able to propagate from the long established stems? My plant is aged and has well over a dozen pups that are plant size.

hi! im a new plant owner and i’ve recently got mine but i’m struggling to find how often i should water mine and the indication of when it needs watering again. any advice would be very helpful :)
@HouseplantHacks4 жыл бұрын
Yes of course! You need to get to know youyr plant, in different countries with different heat and light levels the watering requirment will be differet, they are reasonably drought tolerant so if it goes a few days being dry it wont hurt the plant too much, but start with once per week and check the moisture in the plant pot, see how fast it dries out, you can tell by the weight of the put and by putting a finger an inch into the soil. Let it dry out a little and then water again. Over time you will get to know when is the right time to water, it's all part of the fun! Enjoy.

My plant had dried up. The leaves have become dry and straight. Anything could be done to make it normal again?
@HouseplantHacks3 жыл бұрын
All you can do is give it some water, if you can put it in the sink and let the water run in the pot gently so all the soil is nice and wet, let it all drain out and put it in the shade somewhere and give it some time. Hopefully it will come back. Good luck. Andy

What if my bromeliad is small and the pups are TINY? Under 2-4 inches each? Can I pull those off before the whole thing dies?

How often do I water my bromeliad plsnt
@HouseplantHacks Жыл бұрын
I would leave them on to get bigger, I don't think the whole plant will die back if it has pups.

Cool, will do! Thanks for your response.

Can you show how and where to water the pups, since they don’t have their cups yet? 🤗

I just kept the soil moist and they did fine.

So how much is too much water? What's small amount?

If they don't need to be in soil can you hang just the plant like an air plant

When we were instructed to water we found it to mold... I took the flowering part out, it was so molded... & now it has a flapping hole in the center. What do I do from here? Thank you!

I do see a new pup, but only an inch tall.
@HouseplantHacks3 жыл бұрын
Watering is always a balance, if it’s cooler in your environment it needs less, if warmer it needs more. There is no one piece of advice for all people in all countries. It is something to learn from trial and error. This time it sounds like too much water. At least you now know what too much looks like. Hopefully the pup will grow on and make a flower of its own. Good luck.

Maybe some liquid nutriants might help them get going? Good luck with them.

I got one, I think the pineapple one, and it's flowering but it's tiny, in a tiny pot. Does it need to be re-potted and when? It feels like it's too small, but also I don't think it should be re-potted while it's flowering...
@HouseplantHacks Жыл бұрын
They wont get root bound as they don't grow roots in the same way as other plants so they will be fine in a small pot.
