I’ve worked as a police officer for 28 years and trained in Shotokan karate with people of real pedigree. 90 % of what I learned I never used . What I did use against very violent people in my job , was awareness , confident command of a confrontation, speed and immense ferocity . I was taught to fight in the dojo to exhaustion and under immense pressure . In real life it I ever used any techniques they were fast , overwhelming and simple. Yeah I used my baton and parva spray , but I never grappled or wrestled them . I’d always strike them first . Open hand strikes to the face , knee stones to the thigh . Leg sweeps - which I used in tournament fighting with great success - took them down every time !!! I always recall the shock and loss of aggression in someone who I swept and when they hit the floor hard . I never felt any joy or power trip in doing any of it . I did it out of pure necessity, when no other options were left . I even dealt with some so called cage fighter . Over confident and in a state of utter shock at what he received . I’m no hard man , but I’m a bloody well trained man .

As a shotokan practitioner myself the only techniques I ever used was the good old reverse punch. Other than that its more of awareness and communication.

I think straight punches, front kicks, knees, and foot sweeps, are the bread and butter of applied karate in self defense situations. There are many potential uses for other techniques of course, but I think 90%+ of such situations can be handled with one of the aforementioned techniques or a combination of them.

...and you seems big; that is your advantage. I am small and older than you and the techniques for sure change. Fast and powerful is the best option. Self defense is all about what is not sports Kumite.

In my 80s now and despite black belts in several martial arts I now rely on the one I call HIKIGANE YUBI DO. That translates roughly into "TRIGGER FINGER WAY".

My sensei always told me, This is an age when people "hold" weapon or a sword in their hearts and waving it around left and right. Not like the old age when people actually held or wore a weapon, but have self control and keep it inside the scabbar, until it's really necessary to draw it

Wise words. Most self defense is play fighting. Spot available targets, match the best available weapon, stable stance, shift then turn and transmit power to cause injury.

Given that others have been able to reply in the positive, I guess I must just be an exceptionally slow reader. There was absolutely no way I could read what Senei was saying and be able to look up from the sub titles to see what actions it was related too. I have no doubt this video was of great value, to those who didn't need to read it.

There is a pause feature, I had the same issue as you but I paused it to read and had no issues in doing so with placing the lesson with the technique. I'm quite a slow reader but I found a solution quickly, I hope you at least will give it a shot if you haven't done the same, it really is an awesome lesson and is worth any extra effort.

Very effective and fast to implement tips from Ippei Yagi.... First: Never play hero nor big mouth. Then check environment & environmental behaviour when trouble guy is still at some distance: Is he alone? Has he friends positioning or having eye contacts with some others in a group? Is someone picking up things or taking out something? If not: Watch the distance and body movement as Ippei Sensei says. Focus on YOUR move. The rest ist obvious: strong, fast, finalizing hit(s) to vital points. Answer any grappling with hard punches or kicks, never do same as opponent. Never think about breaking bones or ripping ligaments (yes, they brake and yes, they rip off) - as long he has started the fight. It's called self defense, not Bar fight. At Bar fights, a lot can go south, even if you're Ippei Yagi Sensei. That's a totally different card to play. Had also considerable amount of that....not to be alone, using crowd's lagg, short distance technices (Glasgow Kisses, Elbows, Knees etc.) and of course first strikers are vital here. And: watch the alepots ;) Regards.

Kata, muscle memory. İntelligence. Kata movements can be millions of possibilities. Millions of self defense variations. 1 move can be neck breaking, maybe arm locking , or blocking or attacking , or grappling. İt depends on experience and intelligence of karateka. İn a fight situation. İf you have free mind. İf you have talent. You will apply kata movement involuntarily. Just light bulb must be lighten in your head. İn my opinion. Some moves are just daily routines of old people. Like riding horse, collecting flowers.. some farm stuff. And these are the strongest part of that old people cause they do it for years and everyday. So they just want to use their strongest part in all way. Because of that. Masters say "you will understand by doing it over and over again" cause you can use these movements in all way(grappling, attacking, locking) it depends on your personal talent. There is big art behind of that.

I think sensei you should take this one step further and take it back to karate jutsu that was once used for war. Your being nice, show them the vicious side of fyudoshin when people leave you no choice to goto full intent. The world has forgot the truth that these at one time was used for war, just like the us marine mcmap program. Maybe it time to show full intent defenses. In the world there is evil, that will require this cure. Shiken haramitsu daikoumyo.
