Great analysis. As an OU fan, I completely agree that when Caleb Williams came in, he lifted the whole team up. Body language for daaaaaaaaaaaays. I think Riley is being non-committal because he doesn't want to pile on Rattler, but if he starts Rattler next Saturday, he risks losing the locker room. I think there is something else going on as well, which is Riley's own legendary status as a QB guru. His streak of sending QBs to the pros is at risk if he gives the reigns to Williams. I think he's got to mature a bit, swallow his pride and make the right choice for his team and it's best interest. That's my two cents....

I personally just feel like Riley is looking out for Rattlers well being overall. This cannot be easy for Rattler. His entire future is at stake, possibly following apart before his eyes. This is the best rivalry in football. I don't even know how you could argue a different one. The last game decided by more than a touchdown was over a decade ago. The win loss record is nearly even; the total points scored is almost even as well. Many of the players in the game have been playing with and against each other, their whole lives. Plus, I challenge anyone to name another rivalry, in any sport, at any level, where they built a stadium for that one game.
@jbm08663 жыл бұрын
The Cotton Bowl predates the Texas/OU game, it was SMU's home stadium for a while, and was built for the bowl game of the same name. Nevertheless, I agree with your sentiment.

@@jbm0866 The first Red River Shootout at Fair Park was in 1929, in the wooden structure that predated the current stadium, that was built in 1930. The first bowl game in the Cotton Bowl was in 1937. Yes, it's a multipurpose stadium used for many things. But OU/UT is why they had to build a new one that was so damn big, comparatively. They just found other reasons to justify building it, and to use it for the rest of the year.

Riley has to have an overall strategy for the season that plays to his teams strengths and weaknesses..not just one game - and he does. The thing he wants to do primarily is - keep the opponents defense on the field early. That means on offense, you pound the running game and use short chunk pass and slants, RPO's to convert on third and long if you have to. And that is exactly what he has been doing with Rattler. It is conservative, but needs to be conservative early so he isn't showing his whole hand for teams to exploit later on. He can't play for the AP poll. He needs to win every game. Rattler could not stop Texas from getting that opening drive touchdown or blocking that punt. You can't spot a team 14 pts in the first two minutes and keep half your play book hidden for the next game. .....but you also can't turn it over so Rattler got benched. Riley had to throw the kitchen sink at Texas to come back and he did. Texas defense didn't choke, they got gassed out. You could see it. I recognized because - I have seen OU do exactly the same thing in years past. Rack up a huge lead and then just get worn down in the second half and give it all back. Grinch knows this as well. You cannot dial up pressure every play or you will get burned. You have to wait until just the right moment. Those TX three and out's in the second half were no accident. They happened because the OU defense was fresh. Fresh from sitting on the bench while the offense made those long drives. Those field goal drives seemed frustrating at the time, but they burned up the clock and they burned out the Texas D. OU has not been over hyped all year to this point - they have been under hyped. Now they have three games to loosen up and then the last three games to be perfect. They will need both of the QBs to do it.

That's a very good synopsis. My poor, dear husband has had to deal with me all these years, telling me what's what with the game and everything. The more it clicks, the more I !ove it. I think I said "that's true.. that's true" like 3 or 4 times in the first two minutes. Electric energy from OU fans could be sensed and obviously heard on TV. Far from corporate. Now in Norman, I have been to some night games that were loud as hell, but the 11 a.m. games sometimes feel a bit closer to corporate than 115db (OU has a sizable number of wine and cheese style ticket holders in certain sections of the stadium). Hopefully the atmosphere more resembles what we saw Saturday when OU switches to the SEC.
@INFIDEL912 Жыл бұрын
I’ve been saying that for years, I went to every home game in Norman from 2003 to 2015, I got the tickets from my Rich Boss and the places I have been in the stadium were varied they had 12 different season tickets and in all areas of the stadium,luxury or not I still see the rich fans that only come for the social part and are there just to say hi to others like them and most of them leave early in the third quarter and don’t scream and get into the game. I would hang on the flag pole and scream non stop I don’t care, I am there for THE GAME , I am a Lifelong Rabid Sooner fan and somehow we need more of those in that stadium. The tailgating has become way too corporate as well, I think the answer is to figure out how to accommodate both, I have no problem with people with money and the perks and clubs and their right to have their private tailgates , but close to the stadium needs to be the true rabid fans tailgate zones, it would help create a better vibe and help with recruiting but now on the south side , where the players and RECRUITS come in they won’t allow any students or regular tailgaters like they used to. So they need to rethink it and come up with some new fan experiences outside the stadium . I know they are fixing to toatally change east of the stadium with the new football operations buildings , so they should use that and first give Heisman park a thought out proper park with an actual wall behind it for good pictures that don’t have a parking lot of cars in the pictures and make a permanent close to the stadium fan /tailgate area. Also feature tailgating more, best tailgaters should be recognized and encouraged, I am a design Engineer and I have personally built multiple custom OU trailer mounted Smokers and grills and they are awesome and you never see anything like that. I say to the south where the practice fields are they open that up for fans to be out there and spend some money and make it nice and actually get rid of the port o potty’s and put in a nice public bathroom just outside the stadium. My two cents to a fellow Sooner fan with some of the same thoughts.

When back in the day, I was a student at OU, I knew a LOT, A LOT of "inside info" about the OU football program that no talking head ever gets a whiff of because football players are part of the University community and don't exist in a complete bubble. The chants of "Caleb, Caleb" came from the student section. Maybe it isn't just that the students are jerks and fools. Maybe the know or are aware of some thing's the rest of us, including the national sports media aren't privy to. Again, think about the change in play and body language for the whole OU team, even the defense. I won't explicitly state any conclusions here but its pretty obvious. TCU has a much better D than UT does so that should be a very interesting game.

But I want to say something Texas fans don't feel bad this game could have gone either way Oklahoma just happened to be on fire in the second half. The reciever who stepped out of bounds on his own (ref even threw his hat at the spot) then came back to make a 29 yard catch? That was 3rd down and should have led to a punt...not to mention on that same play our nose tackle was stripped of his helmet, that doesnt happen without a facemask or at least hands to the face. The play where Williams was stripped of the ball and Texas recovered? That is routinely called a fumble across college football..his hand was still in the windup phase, the ball even went behind him..not forward🙈 There were other non calls that were questionable, but those two really werent.
