To clean the pitboss 850 pro grates I take a black bin with yellow top from Costco put the grates in, spray with pit boss degreaser and easy off for grills let set 10 minutes, next put dawn in container fill with some hot water let sit 10 minutes, use steel wool and kitchen sponge everything wipes right off very easy. I do this after each cook I also put foil completely covering the whole bottom of the barrel half way up and I wrap the heat deflector also. Doing this makes clean up easy. I also don’t put the meat directly on the grates unless searing otherwise some little container that are disposable from Amazon. Again easy clean up. I don’t cook on a dirty machine and do what I can to make clean up easy. Great video

Hey, great video! Only thing I would "correct" you on is how the controller works. Once the set temp is met, they still feed pellets, otherwise your fire would die out. They actually go into the smoke setting, and feed pellets based on your p set timing. Also, I sear on my pit boss ALL the time, and I love it! It gets up to 650-700° easily according to the dome thermometer, which when the sear plate is closed is always really close to the digital readout. When searing I sear 2 burgers or steaks at a time, then move them to the side to finish cooking, and do two more, with the open flame they get marks so quick it works really well! Also, as far as your temp difference from left to right, remove that bottom flat drip tray, and add a $30 traeger style heat diffuser, the one that sits right over the fire pot. And then the pit boss also has problems with temp swings due to the gap under that curved drip tray on the left side, where it sits on the body or the barrel, it allows heat from the fire pot to blow directly on the rtd sensor. Cover that with tin foil, or theres a guy on eBay that actually fabs up a piece of metal to rivet in there. Once you take these steps, the pit boss is unbeatable for the price and hopper capacity.

Timing is everything. I returned from Lowes with my new smoker shortly after you posted your video. I've been sitting on the fence between these two cookers for a week, but I (re)purchased the Pit Boss and here's why. I purchased my first Pit Boss Pro 1100 on July 3rd 2020 and used it several times really liking the outcomes. I came up from a Masterbuilt electric smoker so 'live fire' was a significant change. Then 5 weeks later on August 10th a derecho (inland hurricane) hit my town Cedar Rapids, among the damaged property was my practically new Pit Boss 1100. About 500 pounds of Maple tree hit it and dented or distorted the hopper, auger chamber, barrel, and legs. It was totalled. Lowes was out of the Pro 1100 nationwide so I started looking at the Rider DLX. I really liked the headroom above the shelves, something the Pro 1100 lacks, but the small hopper was a minus. Add in that I couldn't get over how much the heat diffuser on the Rider looked like a trash can lid, plus how difficult I assumed it would be to keep it clean, and I was stuck between the Rider and the Pro 1100. Then 13 days into my decision process I got an email alert that a Lowes 30 miles from my town just received a shipment of Pit Boss Pro 1100s. I got off work early today to make the trip to pick up the cooker. Yes, both models are pellet grills and a competition BBQ-er chuckles at them - that would be my brother in law who is a competition cooker with many awards. But for me the Pit Boss had reliability and most important familiarity going for it. Ricer, in my opinion you are correct, learn your cooker and the differences between the models soon becomes negligible. P.S. I have a Weber for grilling, I don't rely on the searing capabilities of my smoker.

Stu you are 100% correct and one clip that ended up on the cutting room floor is where I say for a person like me that enjoys grilling with charcoal the Pit Boss is all I need. Again I really like both of these cookers! Like I say if I could only have one the Rider would be my pick. Enjoy that 1100!! I have pushed a lot of protein through that barrel and never really complained unless I was using it as a grill. Now get cooking Stu!!!! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! Have a great week!

Hey, I've been creeping on you channel since father's day. I sold my chargrill combo and bought a Rider DLX. I had my combo set up like a charcoal smoker on one side then the gas on the other.. I have three active kids, not the best for my lifestyle. I have no experience with pellet grills. I've had zero issues with the Rider. It's a great product. I get consistent temps always. The center grill is cracked, that doesn't affect performance. It's what I need, something I can set up and I don't need to babysit a lot. I think it's more of a grill that can be used as a smoker. Until I get more free time and I finally buy a stick burner, this will do. Cheers, great work!

Be on the lookout in the coming months for the OJ DLX 2022 models aka their gen 2's. Just spoke to them today and they updated the auger to nix their auger issues (now calling it the pit 2.0 with higher torque) and a new control panel/system (one much smaller and more polished beautiful knob and a landscape placed screen with buttons set by themselves not under said screen) with the first ever dual temp sensors in any pellet grills out there. They said they should be in Lowes replacing the older models soonish, some places having already done so per rep. Pretty stoked about it if it fixes most of the issues from the gen 1's (like yours in this video) and to see if you can tell a noticeable difference in internal build quality if you pick one up.

I was down to the Pit Boss Pro Series 1600 and the Oklahoma Joe Rider DLX. I went with the 1600 simply due to all the problems with the Oklahoma Joe. I like my 1600 but it has problems of its own. I am waiting on the updated controller for it. The gen 2 of the Rider DLX may be in my future if the updated controller on the Pit Boss doesn't work as advertised.
@DeadBrokeBBQ3 жыл бұрын
My 1600 updated controller made this pit run great! The DLX needs more than a controller update. It needs a much bigger auger motor and a PID controller. The chamber is awesome but if you heard me say in this video the company that comes out with a PID will be the best big box store pit and the Pro Series did that. Thanks for watching!

Hey Dead! I'm considering both the OJ Raider DLX and the Pit Boss 850 with the PID controller. I like all the features of the DLX and don't really need the PID controller, but hear of all the issues from breakers popping, to auger games, to inconsistent heat and even the ash catcher getting stuck (guessing from cross threading). Have you had any of these issues?
@DeadBrokeBBQ3 жыл бұрын
Hi Greg so I have the new Pit Boss 1600 with the PID controller and I did the burn off on it tonight in 12° now it took longer than I expected to get up to temp but I was very happy how consistent it ran once it reached temp. I did hear a rumor that there might be a firmware update coming as well to get you more of a variety of temp settings. As for the DLX, I love that pit and the sear plate is top notch but I had a couple issues with it but nothing earth shattering. I had an issue with the igniter which caused a couple auger jams. 2 of them I was able to clear with a coat hanger the other I had to completely remove the auger and that was not a lot of fun. I also had a controller go out on me but that was a simple swap and luckily I have multiple cookers so I could finish the cook on another pellet grill. I never had any real problems with my Pit Boss 1100, it just runs. Ok so what cooker would I pick now seeing there is the new Pro Series, I am picking the Pit Boss over the DLX simply because it does have a PID controller. Now it still doesn't match up to my Pellet Pro 1190 but that is a lot more expensive cooker. PID is WAY better than an analog controller Greg. Temps swings are not as crazy with a PID controlled cooker. Now the Pit Boss isn't perfect but they have come a log way with the PID, Ash Dump Fire Pot and the quicker pellet dump. Also I always had to burn out ALL the pellets in the auger after every higher temp cook because if I didn't I was going to have to clear an auger jam. Good luck brother!!
@gregbesemer32593 жыл бұрын

Ricer with the bug saber skills lol...I enjoyed this comparison. I think what you pointed out at the end regarding the type of preferred wheels is often overlooked in pellet smokers-well smokers period. Most often we get these little casters that are rated solely for moving across concrete, however, a lot of folks (myself included) have to wheel the smoker through grass to get to the concrete patio. The one I bought has 8" foam filled tires which helps a lot. Thanks again for sharing.

Have you noticed a difference in performance with different pellets. I have the Ryder dlx using tragger pellets and I have to let it slowly come up to temp before I can set it to sear. I have to let it start smoking temp before I can go up to 300+. What happens is it will trip my gfi because the fire gets too hot so it shuts off, have you ever had that issue without a grease fire.
@DeadBrokeBBQ4 жыл бұрын
I prefer Premium Cooking Pellets but I have used a lot of different types. I am not a huge fan of the Traeger pellets but I do like the Kingsford brand as a cheaper alternative. Get a thicker extension cord, that might help reduce the heat overload!?!? Prior to my new igniter I had a couple E code errors but I can't remember what one it was. Maybe E4???? @MrRandyj724 жыл бұрын
There are some known issues of the Ryder DLX.... You can get the details from the Facebook group... But in general.. The round center grate almost always cracks. The full metal body and wheels causes grounding issues if you have your grill standing on cement or Gravel and plugged into a GFI. This issue will cause it to constantly pop the GFI or give you the ER2 codes. Other than that when you learn the grille it's pretty awesome.
@DeadBrokeBBQ4 жыл бұрын
Hey that is an interesting fact about the GFI, thanks for sharing that nugget Randy!!! I agree I really like the Rider for a 1 stop grill/smoker!!

Great Video. I am leaning towards the DLX mostly because of the interior height and sear option. PB seems short on height less than 9'' compared to 13 for the DLX. But I do like the PID controllers. You think I could pickup a different controller from another brand and install it, I would think it would all wire up the same but idk that's why im asking. Thanks again
@DeadBrokeBBQ3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill since PB came out with the PID controller and mine is updated I really like the 1600. The Rider still has the edge as far as the flame broiler but I would lean PB now over OK Joe. i own the pb1100 and this weekend i cooked some ribs. the left side of the grill is accurate with the control display but the right side is up to 130 degrees higher. i spoke to pitboss and the customer service department told me that the right side does run hotter. and that i had to keep an eye on the cook. that is one big temp difference. with my stick burner i am within 25 degrees left to right. i run the exhaust stack on the pb1100 wide open.
@DeadBrokeBBQ4 жыл бұрын
Dang Ace now that is certainly a huge difference!!! WOW!!! I typically have 75° but 130?!?!?! 25° on a stick is perfect!!! I like that 25° hot zone so if you want to push something a bit but I would have a hard time with that big of a swing!!! Thanks for watching and the heads up for others in the comments!!

Take out the bottom flat drip tray, and cover the air gap that on the bottom left side of the curved drip tray, where the tray sits on the barrel it leaves a gap, and heat from the fire pit blows directly on the rtd, and causes issues. Cover the gap with foil or theres a mod someone makes on eBay.

I have had a Rider dlx for a minute now. I have no cracks in the grates and have had one auger jam. The auger jam was my fault do to leaving a pan of water in the grill after a cook. I have had it shut down two times with an error code but I was useing an old cord and my grill would start right back up. I easily run several hundred pounds of pellets through my grill and it runs fantastic with no problems. my friend who has had one longer than me and has run way more pellets through his grill than me and Cooks way more on his grill than I do also has had no problems. My friend also has some good cooking videos up on KZbin on the Rider DLX and he goes by Big Baby. Look him up enjoy cooking everybody.

Awesome Kevin! Glad yours is crushing it!! Mine does fine also!! I just had a couple issues early but everything is running top notch again!! It will be a while before I get rid of my DLX.
