Richard Rodgers was an absolute genius songwriter. The chromatic harmonies and modulations are sublime. Rodgers and Hammerstein were unprecedented and will never be surpassed. The upward run near the end never ceases to amaze me. It starts on exactly the right note like a musical jigsaw.

A wonderful movie from a bygone time. I remember watching all the Rogers and Hammerstein films at my grandma's house growing up. State fair and South Pacific were my favorites

This is the album Overture, recorded just for the Lp. The film overture, recorded for the Todd-AO version, was not on the album. The Cinemascope version did not have a formal overture per se, but just what was heard under the opening credits.

The overture from the album of the 1955 movie soundtrack. The play premiered on Broadway in 1943. Due to the constraints of a theatre orchestra pit, the Broadway orchestra would have been smaller than this large Hollywood soundstage orchestra, and therefore not as lush and full.
