This is actually one of the better reels Okuma made in the days where they weren't really known for quality fishing reels. Interesting company really. Huge company outside of fishing allowing them to have their own manufacturing facility. Okuma actually employed the gentleman at Tiburon around 2004 to make a stab into the higher end gear market. They came out with the original Cavalla then that was basically the brainchild of both Okuma and Tib. It was, and still is, well received and since then Okuma has produced fabulous saltwater conventional reels. They created the Makaira a few years later which is still widely regarded as among the best offshore reels. They've also had the metalloid, the Andros, the new Cavalla, etc., which are also highly regarded. They really went from low end reels with a poor reputation to a high end manufacturer in the period of 3-4 years.

Thans for the additional information and education Jeff. I'm thinking the SS in the model number is for stainless steel and those gears are inpressive.

@@2ndChanceTackle it definitely appears to be stainless. I'd see these being used as trolling reels on the Chesapeake many years ago. Cheap option to have 6+ of in a spread and they were able to run umbrellas and heavier tandems off these. The most common reels were the GTI or GT2 Penn reels but these were a bit more cost efficient

Thank you so much for this. It really helped me with my Okuma Convector CN55L. Love the way you present and explain it. Wish me luck on my fishing trip next month

You are far better off sending reels like this to a pro like you (and they are few and far between) to repaire if you exspect to ever use it again.

this thing is a monster compared to any Okuma's I have, it's built like a tank inside
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
Yes it is. Definitely a well made reel with quality materials

how does this compare to the Penn 555?
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
I think it would be a nice compare and a fairly equal competitor
