A good comparison on the rods. I am partial to a shorter reach to the reel, I may sideline my Rockaway for the Hawaiian.

I tried Rockaway 12ft MH for a few weeks and had to return it. Two main complains: 1) it is more like medium and casting a 4oz sinker seemed pushing it (even though it was rated 1-4 oz). 2) the reel seat needs to be re-tightened ever other cast. Eventually I went back to cheapo Fiblink. A couple oz heavier but get the job done without finickies.

I use jdm Majorcraft models for my shore fishing these days. Incredibly well tuned and put together rods, but most of their stuff is more expensive. The Crostage and TripleCross models are sub $200 though if you are willing to spend a bit more. There are specific "surf" models, but you can pretty much substitute shore jigging for surf rods, most of the time. That being said, most are built for lighter line pe up to 2-2.5. I always go light as possible so that doesn't affect me really. I recently upgraded my old N-One rod to a new Flatrek 5g 10'8" that is simply out of this world to cast, and oh so responsive and sensitive. Pricey, but well worth it.
@Hook2Cook

For sure there’s a lot of expensive options out there. If we’re talking about value and bang for the Buck paying over double for barely noticeable difference, for most anglers doesn’t make sense. Hawiian custom is like $130

@@Hook2Cook I hear that. I still love and use my Cabelas tourney trail salmon rods for the surf, from time to time. And those cost me like $50. But seriously if you gonna spend 500 on a van staal, why not spend more for a rod?

I am considering the Okuma. What is a good line weighting for both braid and leader for that rod? I might actually get the medium that is rated for a 3/4 to 2 ounce lure. Can I get away with throwing that 5/8 ounce lure pretty far with either or will it go further with the rod in this video(ML)?

Trying to avoid spending money on another rod of this SST would be fine for Stripers in the surf using lures (Calissa ,LC)etc. appreciate the video

I have those 2 rods in all lengths. Haw'n Custom is more finesse to the Rock's setting power. Have you 2 ever tried the 10'6" SST? I tried both the 2pc carbon & Travel Rod 4pc cork versions side by side. Both rods actually feel the same! But honestly i rate those SST's on a much higher pedestal to all my Hawn Customs & Rockaways. Now i love all of them but i stopped using my Customs & Rocks altogether & went all SST's. Yes, very close to the Guide Select Pros's but that line to me is more for jacking sm-med fish for table fare w/no "fun time" to enjoy the fight. Nothing wrong with that. Just i look forward to my SST's just for that. Better feel & i feel more connected to them is all.

My friend uses his for C model for spinning. It's rated up to 16oz. I thought he cut & filed the thumb tab but baybe just spun it around? Supposedly the spline is arranged for casting but on a blank with that much backbone i'm sure theres no problem throwing 3-4oz plugs like he does. He's pulled in decent GT's and loves his. It's 9'6" rated at XH. The perfect states for plugging! @@aaronwilde

As long as the lure rating is within what you’re hoping to do with it go for it! $70 starting price to get you out there isn’t that bad! It might be a little stiff for lures.
