Great content, enjoy watching all of your videos. Truly appreciate the wide variety of fishing methods and product reviews your channel provides! Looking to upgrade rod and reel very soon! Was able to get my hands on the Trifecta Lite 903 with the intention of only throwing the calissa 110. I have no doubt after watching some of your videos and others posted that the Trifecta Lite can handle large striped bass and slab perch. My concern is how the rod will preform on the North Coast.. wave power seems to be a bit stronger, concerned this will decrease rod sensitivity and lead to potential damage of the rod itself. Any input in that regard? Any further suggestions on a reel that would complete this set up? Tried lots of reel combos and the foot of the reels doesn’t fit the insert of the trifecta lite, a bit concerning. Had my eyes on a Diawa Vanford 4000 any thoughts?

For a budget Surf Perch rod, you might want to look at the Daiwa North Coast and Acculite rods. I have been very happy with my Daiwa Acculite ACSS962MFS, 9'6", 3/8 - 1 oz, Medium. It's fairly cheap, MSRP is $70, but it can be a little hard to find. I got lucky and found mine online for $50.

Skunk is not bad, you are still fishing and that is the plan for the day, catching is just the cherry on top. I have surf rods that I do not like very much, the reel is way too far up the rod for comfort. I wind up using a casting rod and cut off the first eye and that works for me.

A few questions.....I am sure with a more finesse rod the Calissa and similar lures will cast further than a heavier rod - Correct? Approx how far do you think the Calissa can be cast with that Okuma? (just a rough estimate)......the Okuma you recommended is rated 1/4 - 1/2 oz lure ....the Calissa is 5/8 oz.....that is over the specs. Will that over stress the rod over time? Would that Okuma Celilo hold up with a light weight Carolina rig and would a Carolina rig that light be effective in the surf? Can you please post a link to the website you recommended with the wave strength forecast? Ed, thank you for your channel it has certainly brought me up to speed in surf fishing.

@Hook2Cook
@Hook2Cook Жыл бұрын
The trifecta lite series is probably the best balanced rod you can find. The Achilles heal of that rod is the small lure weight options. Most of them have a half ounce range so they’re very specific. Ie: the 1003ml everyone wants only casts 1/4-3/4 ounce. But if you know you’re only throwing the 110 all day, it’s a nice rod

Not enough benefits to justify the downside if you snap your leader and happen to need to go all braid, it’ll be unnatural. It’s not like you need a strike indicator or be ultra precise out there. I just bought a phenix trifecta lite. I’m not sure what reel to go for. Any suggestions? 3000 or 3500 reel?
@Hook2Cook
@Hook2Cook 2 жыл бұрын
If you can find a 3500 series that’s really the sweet spot on most reels for this application. A 4000 shimano nasci is a good choice since it’s very light

I run a 4000 stratic and love it. I've also used a BG 3500 for a while. Both sizes are great options.

Do you tie a leader or go straight braid tying the calissa?
@Hook2Cook
@Hook2Cook 2 жыл бұрын
leader with an FG knot using 20-30LB fluorocarbon. reason is going straight braid wouldn't be good near structure also its stiff so fouling up on the treble hooks is very rare. also in case fish are line shy- of course a leader is less visible

I have a 10.5 OKUMA SST rod, a medium/light, that's even better than the Celilo, which is also an OKUMA product. This ain't no meat rod, and I use it for Pink Salmon, and Kokanee, up here in Washington State, as well as redtails along the Coast, on light surf/wind days. On heavier surf days, a Rockaway 11', and a medium/heavy 10.5, EMCAST, rated up to 30 ib. test, and up to 6 oz. casting weight, gets the job done. I use 3,000 -5,000 open faced spinning reels. I have owned Celilo's, used them for Coho Salmon. Good rods. Too light for Kings, or Chums, both pretty powerful fish.

I thought I would mention a rod that cast the 5/8 lures great, can use the Carolina rig up to a 2 1/2oz weight and it is at a budget price. The Okuma Rockaway 11' medium/fast, the lure rating is 3/4 to 3oz it's a great rod. The cost is right around $90.00. Have you checked out this rod?

Dropping down in braid size like 15-20 lb will definitely increase casting distance.....🤙
@Hook2Cook
@Hook2Cook 2 жыл бұрын
Theoretically yes. but Knowing you have 30# gives you the confidence to give it a really hard rip. Snapping 20# on a bad cast is really easy to do

In some of your video's guys loose their lure casting.....what is the cause......worn line, twisted line, bad casting technique? Seems with the strength of braid the lure should not break off.

The softer rod let’s you load up on your 1/2oz baits also keeps the trebles pinned in case you don’t get a good hookset

The lesson learned here is cheap rods and reels catch fish. Expensive rods and reels catch anglers. I do have a Megabass Shadow Pangea with a Stella which caught me for $1.5K. My Celilo and BassPro Fish Eagle rods have been catching all the fish.
