Oh, that's a little terrifying. Between the relatively low temperature, the viscosity, and unusual colour I think it'd be easy to assume that was just a muddy geyser.

Except for the temperature I'd agree. I suppose technically though a volcano is just a geyser.

@@jonn40853 Oh yeah, you're not gonna walk up and put your hand in it, but in a more mundane location I could imagine it looks more approachable at a distance than the red, glowing stuff.

400-600 C is VERY cool for lava, a commercial oven could reach those temperatures. Sodium and calcium carbonate, is this basically a molten salt volcano? On a semi-related note, I heard a guy once fell into a pool of this lava and though he suffered severe burns, managed to crawl his way out, giving him the dubious honor of being the only person to survive being submerged in lava.

I camped inside Ol Doinyo Lengai back in 2001, 2002 and 2004. Fascinating volcano! It glows a dull red at night similar to the glow of an electric stove.

@SirFloofy001

Actually its very well understood now. During periods of low volcanic activity, the magma chamber acts like a giant settling pot. The heaviest stuff sinks towards the bottom and the lighter stuff floats up. During periods of high volcanic activity the flow of magma into the chamber is fast enough to mix the chamber and prevent settling.

@Sambo Sambo I completely support this statement and I promise you, my thesis statement highlights my position on this. My sole intention is to find cost-effective monitoring solutions that the Geological Survey of Tanzania and CBO officers can use if they wish to. This project is supported by the GST, COSTECH and UDSM, who's staff are indeed more than qualified to report on this.
