My own theory is that while yes, 80% of the sound comes from the cabinet I think the cabinet is a filter that you get used to hearing a guitar sound through. I think that's why once you find a cab or impulse you really like anything can sound amazing through it and then every other cab or impulse just sounds wrong in comparison. I theorise that the cabinet you end up having the most real life experience with is the one you get used to and thus keep coming back to it. I think that's why a lot of metal guys love Mesa cab's so much, most of us buy one pretty early on and just get used to it. For me I used and Orange for most of my founding years and everything; to me, just sounds 'right' through and Orange cab or impulse. I'll used an analogy of colour grading and film. The cabinet is like the colour grade that sets the mood of the scene while the amp head is more like the actors in the film. The actors can change their emotions and actions scene to scene, but the colour grading always invokes the same mood where-ever it is used.

Careful what you playback through. I played this through my excellent car stereo system. Mesa Cabinet was slightly better than Engl cabinet with a bit more headroom. Both cabinets sound good though. Yes Engl amps are good but I prefer the ability to have less compression which is really impossible to dial out of an Engl. I would bet adding compression to the Mesa would surprise people. Too me the Mesa is more versatile. The Engl gets that certain sound without the need of pedals though. I can see where people prefer it. But if you play a multitude of genres, it is hard to beat a Mesa Roadster or Roadking II. The Mesa Badlander is great for modern Metal though.

This is an interesting video, and my favourite cabinet was the mesa. But my experience is, that in a band context, with drums and bass beside you, everything can be different. Frequencies that you like, when playing an amp alone, can be the frequencies, that get lost when the bass is playing. And frequencies, that are too agressive, when playing alone, can be the ones that keep your guitar sound from drowning in band context....... Never ending story

Ola I want to thank you first for this comparison. As an audio engineer and longtime guitar player, I'd have to say that the Marshall with its cab sounds the best over all. However, it does need a driver comparison in your studio. I've never been that happy with eminence drivers but they are a good overall baseline to start with,I think it would be worth a test of different drivers like celestion 30s, and a few more modern drivers in that old cab untill you get the grunt you're looking for out of that old Marshall, it really is a fantastic sounding Amp the voicing of the pre Amp is perfection because the clarity of notes is impeccable. In this comparison the boogie cab sounded better with the Marshall head period. All the rest sounded darker and a bit muddled to me. They all seemed to sound best with their matching cab except the Marshall. Thank you for your time and as always I look forward to your next test

Tool guitarist Adam Jones was connecting two amplifiers in serial in the 90s. Could you try and demonstrate that once?... I liked the ENGL amplifier together with the Mesa Rectifier cabinet (8:52) the most. \m/

@Blaze Infernus 😥 I am disillusioned right now. Nobody uses an amplifier as a pre-amplifier...

I think this is the first time I've seen a comparison like this, and I now see why the Mesa cabs are so hyped. It's so much beefier than all the others.

I have a Recto 4x12 (V30) and it makes any head sound deep and dark. It matches perfectly with the DSL20.

Mesa looks to me the best for loud modern riff and the Engl/marshall for loud and fluid solos ! (Fortin best overall to simulate someone pooping)

All four amps sounded killer in the Mesa Cab. I liked every amp in the Engl cab better than the Engl in the Engl. I think the Fortin into the Mesa or the Marshall into the Engl was my favorite!

@@1ROCKDRIGO Dual Dark is such a killer amp - I've always wanted one. Face-off between the PPC412 and Mesa Recto 4x12 before pairing them up would be pretty rad. Also, a lot of love for the ThunderVerb 50. Fav amp I ever owned for metal. Low-end response with TV50 and PPC412 is something special.

This is, I think, the f*ing best amp and cab comparo I've seen. I wouldn't have thought that, even with the same speakers, how different the cabnets would sound... and how the same the amp heads did! I learned something today boys... re-thinking some gear here... Metal!!!

My top 3 combos: 1. Marshall head, Engl Cab 2. Engl head, Recto cab 3. Fortin head, recto cab Its interesting because I was actually a bit disappointed in the sound of the fortin cab. The head sounds amazing with other cabs but I feel like the Fortin cabinet just made the tone really lackluster. That recto cab on the other hand was excellent!! Great vid Ola. I requested in an FAQ for you to do a cab shootout and im very pleased with this!! For the next vid id love to see perhaps Randall, Orange, 5150 and some other amp of your choosing? Also would loooove to see those combos with the old hesu 2x12 cab!!

Marshall cabinet is the only one slant and it makes a huge difference
@2204JCM3 жыл бұрын
That depends. Meaning yes if your standing by it like Ola. But no if your close miking it.
@bocolis883 жыл бұрын
@@2204JCM Slant cabinets have less bottom end and generally are more trebly. And yes he’s not close miking it in the video only the Mesa cab.
@2204JCM3 жыл бұрын
@@bocolis88 No they don’t -I have one. The difference is that the the top two speakers point more towards your ears. Stick your ears in front of a “B” Cab vs an “A” cab and you will hear the harsh treble in both of them. When your standing up your ears aren’t on axis with the “beam” from the speakers. So you don’t hear it. The “A” cab points two of the speakers more on axis with your ears -so you hear it more. This is the issue with a cranked amp facing the audience on stage. It sounds great to the guitarist but at the same time its cutting off the heads of the people in the front row...
@bocolis883 жыл бұрын
@@2204JCM I have one as well and yes they do have less bottom end cause the enclosure is smaller in litters. It’s not day and night but it makes a difference. I don’t disagree with what you say explaining the why we hear more treble and in the video the mics in the room capture the audience listening point as you explain.

Very helpful video, thanks for doing this! Personal favorite - Fortin into the Mesa cab. When it's all said and done, the cab and speakers seem to have the most influence over the sound.
