Been following Buster since like 2017 because his work on Currents, Shadow Of Intent or Born Of Osiris really blew my mind. I saw him as the successor of Joey Sturgis who was the king from 2010 to 2014 and I felt that he kept the same vibe of low tuned snare, HARD hitting drums and "over"produced sound that I love so much. So happy to see him gain so much populariry this year, he deserves every shed of attention he is given, hard working dude

Ola is so on the nail with Buster being the modern guitarist/producer. He's so ahead of the pack right now and you can clearly hear his influence on the metal scene. Everyone is going for the heavy and massive low end that he managed to tame and everyone's chasing that sound in some shape or form. It's a shame HLB and Vildhjarta are still relatively niche but on the other hand Thrown being so massive is testament to the sound people want.
@RocketToSleep Жыл бұрын
Great interview. Buster's thoughts on trying to make a metal kit sound as massive as EDM drums and such, it's really inspiring. Metal needs more producers that are trying to push the envelope on production techniques.
@f67739 Жыл бұрын
so everything can get joey sturgis-ified again? i'd argue for a return to more raw, stripped back production, and experimenting/innovating on getting cool sounds and tracks before it even gets printed into the DAW and every bit of life mangled out of it
@RocketToSleep Жыл бұрын
@@f67739 I'm not really into Joey Sturgis. Buster is speaking from a sound design mindset vs whatever it is that Joey is trying to do. Also, depending on the music, it should be approached in different ways. Should HLB be produced like a 1-take studio session or an 8-track Tascam black metal mix? No. It's a much more grandiose idea, and Buster even speaks on that during the interview. There is a point at 1:13 in Blood Spilled on the new HLB album, when I first heard it, reminds me of the production techniques used in some NIN songs, where everything achieves this gritty, distorted texture. It's a soundscape that creates an energy within the track. It's this type of thinking that I appreciate and am really speaking on, just as Buster speaks of. Think of some great albums over time, not just metal, look at the mix engineers and producers and how they created bigger sounds or effected things to become more atmospheric. There's nothing wrong with producing an amazing, raw song/album. It's necessary for so many things. But, there's also lots to be explored and I can appreciate that there are people like Buster, willing to try taking things to a new level. Cheers!
@dilbophagginz Жыл бұрын
@@f67739 It depends on the band/project, you can hear massive difference in how Vildjharta and HLB songs are produced. And going for a massive, larger-than-life sound just works for what HLB is going for.

Every guitar-boomers head is totally exploding after seeing this interview. "Playing guitar upside down? POD Farm for guitar sound? Pitching and not tuning the right way? Just some input on the pitch shifter plugin latency - I measured the latency of my DT drop pedal to be around 16ms regardless of setting (compared to bypass), and there's a free plugin called Aegan Pitchproof that is actually faster (as low as 10ms) when pitching a few semi-tones, but slower (more than 20ms) when pitching full octaves. It has some nasty artifacts when playing chords but it works well for single note stuff. To put it into perspective, audio travels one meter in 2.9ms, so a 16ms delay would be similar to standing 5½ meters away from your amplifier when playing. It's noticeable when playing fast things but fast enough for most scenarios.
