Old 286 PC WILL IT WORK?

I was gifted this old PC, lets see if it still works?
If it does, it could come in handy for old file retrieval and PCB testing.

miss my 286 old pc

I well remember my first 286, an old fire damaged chassis that I bought and fitted with a 10MB HDD to run DOS and various programs like "WORDSTAR" and a clone of Lotus 123 called "Words and Figures". Slow but reliable and teamed with my old Citizen 120D Dot Matrix printer, it worked well. Then I upgraded to a 386 on which I ran Windows 1.0. Fond memories. 😄😄

Egads I remember having to do this. Upgraded to a 386 quickly because we accidentally plugged the power supply cable to the motherboard backwards ... back then you could actually do this because it didn't have the custom plugs as it does now

@@ChasLarge Yeah I also seriously remember getting a 20MB drive and was super happy. Times have certainly changed. Don't forget master/slave jumper'ing man that was also a friggin nightmare to remember early on

@@nomore-constipation Yes I remember. My first HDD was a 10MB drive. I remember having to do a low level configuration via DOS just to set up the drive structure before it could be formatted. And the joys of setting up AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. Folk don’t realise what they’re missing these days 😂😂

I'd commend Installing Novell DOS which I believe is now Open Source, which beats thhe pants off of MS DOS. Gives you more RAM, a built in manual (Just add a "?" to any command yoou were considering typing,and the manua pops-up on screen, with worked examples,It even allows you to Multi-task under DOS! You can open TWO ASCII documents at the same time, and cut & paste text between the two. Great video, which takkes me WAY back down memory lane. If you HAD mananged to dig up a contemporary keyboard, hidden nderneath you''d have a found a switch marked "XT/AT" The oiginal IBM used a slightly different keyboard setup.

Thanks for the suggestion. Not much point in upgrading the DOS, I'd likely loose the WP and WORKS installations as I don't have the install discs for either. I will probably never use this PC again, just put it in my museum (the Attic ;-) ) I'm aware of the PC/XT keyboards and may well have one stowed away somewhere in the aforementioned museum.

I got the RTEEB fault finding certificate back in the 80s, did you purchase the official tie (it had an atom logo on it as I recall)?

No, I was never one for ties! :-D Still have my certs though and all my C&Gs.
