---- Short History ----
- Old Beaupre Castle is a fortified manor house.
- Built around the 16th or 17th century on previous buildings dating back to around 1300.
- Owned by the Basset family until the 18th century.
- The outer gatehouse was completed in 1586.
- The three-storied Renaissance porch was completed in 1600 and bears the family's heraldic.
- After the English Civil War (1642-1651) the Basset family fortunes fell.
- The Basset inheritance went to the Jones family at the beginning of the 18th century.
- It was sold in 1709, but was probably still partially occupied.
- The southeastern block is still occupied as a farmhouse under a different listing on the historic buildings register.

Castles are amazing. It’s hard to imagine how they were built so many years ago just using basic tools and construction. Fascinating

This is one of my personal favourites. There’s no road access to it. just park in a small lay-by and cross two fields. It’s always very quiet there as not many people even the locals know about it. Definitely worth you visiting it

So, the Beaupre's built the castle? Why is it the Beaupre Castle? I'm supposedly related to some Beaupre's from that Era. Lady Ann Beaupre was a great grandmother of mine. I know they had a lot of money and titles.

That is really interesting wow. You could be related to the people who once lived there. Much research is needed.

@@TheyHadADay Possibly, I know they had other places around that area. Here is the one I'm familiar with that Ann Beaupre's Dad owned at one time and then the Wrights lived there after that, which my Grandmother was a Wright. Ann Beaupre married into the Wright family, which also held titles for generations. Once upon a time, this was a house called Beaupré Hall, erected in the early sixteenth century by the Beaupre family, who also held the manors of Sautrey, Wells, Norton, Hakbech and Thurning. The estates became the property of Edmund Beaupré, and eventually absorbed into the Beaupré estate. houseandheritage.org/2019/02/16/beaupre-hall/
