Welcome to The Ghosts of Dunster Castle, Somerset, England.
(Some images are for illustration only)
Today, we are going on a journey to look at the hauntings and stories at the very active and beautiful Dunster Castle in Somerset. Who haunts the old Keep? What strange things are afoot in the dungeon? Who is lurking on the oak staircase? And what on earth happened to me in the crypt in January that still leaves me feeling unsettled even today? This is a very active location.
Some of the stories focus on historic events and I hope you feel that my video covers the sad side of history in a respectful and honest way, without the need for sensationalising the past. Please stay tuned to the end to hear a small post script from me, Nicola, where I’ll share what happened to me and a postcard.
As always, I hope you enjoy these tales from Dunster Castle. Feel free to leave a comment. Thank you so much for your kind words and comments. They mean so much to me. Please feel free to Like and Subscribe to the channel.
Your support is always appreciated. If your feeling generous, you can buy me a cup of tea using the Ko-fi link below. Your generosity helps to keep the channel producing new content and encourages the channel to expand.

My Stepfather took me and my Mum here in the late 70s, My Stepfather was evacuated to the Castle during the war, he recalled waking up in the night with a Templar Knight in chain mail armour and sword standing over him just watching him silently. He would Draw me a picture of him and recalled the story to me again a few years ago before he died. Thanks Nicola.

@@ghostcasebook1266 Yep , still have the table and it sits at the bottom of the stairs in my cottage. It’s been uneventful for a few years now but the first few weeks….. always in the evening and overnight , it started as a ‘ polite ‘ tapping but by the time I would be in bed the ‘ raps ‘ would resonate up the stairs and wake me up. I investigated ( in sheer terror ) for the first few days and then did my best to ignore it. Why didn’t I get rid ? It’s a lovely table ! I did sleep with the light on and the radio playing for a while…..

@marciaspiegel5280 I moved to OR in 2021. At present I live in a house which I did not like when I moved in. For the first year or so, items seemed to vanish. I knew where I'd put these things, but they were nowhere to be found, and when I stumbled upon them again, they were in very odd places. This fed an active resentment I had toward the house, which, I think, made the activity worse. I did know, though,

Then I looked through the door glass and not a single person was inside. Door was unlocked we all walked in and the organ was well and truly locked up. @@ghostcasebook1266 I would say that you having a KZbin channel about ghosts make you predisposed to how you interpreted your experience...William was the Manager when I was there doing my university placement year and I spent lots of time with him, including a few time in his families apartment, and he loved the stories that were connected to Dunster Castle as they were all great marketing tools....I also knew Jackie and the grounds keeping team at the time. Many of the stories you have referred to in your video were ones that we all told to visitors and press enquiries and also leaned heavily into when we did the ghost tours around Hallowe'en. There is absolutely no verifiable, scientific evidence of ghosts and I can confirm that in the whole year I spent working (in all parts of the castle and grounds) and living onsite (the old nursery in the Salvin Tower was converted to a 2 bedroom apartment for student placements) I never once experienced, or heard of anyone else experiencing, anything inexplicable.

Dunster Castle is a really fascinating building and we have to be thankful that Cromwell's order to "slight" the castle did not destroy it as at Kenilworth, Corfe and so many other important buildings. My great-great grandmother who was called Charlotte Escott-Wood was from Dunster and like so many country people at this time- the 1840s, had to leave as the agricultural depression forced folk to move to the Midlands and North where pretty grim job opportunities in the new factories were available. The trouble with these supernatural experiences is they happen unexpectedly and sometimes one is not really aware- as some of the experiences you recount, that something strange is happening until it is over. Some are very strange- and I certainly had one that took place over about 20 seconds which was utterly bizarre but at the time I knew it was happening. A very interesting film on a number of levels.

The gatehouse would have been flanked by walls that were all slighter but a lot of the red sandstone structures are much later, and in the 1860 there was a huge amount of remodelling. But yes, Kenilworth and Corfe were beyond recognition, sadly. Glad you enjoyed the video for sure 🙏👻🙋‍♀️

Dunster Castle is a marvel thank you for the tour and information! I was really impressed with your story, and thought I would share with you something that happened to me. I was asleep in an old hotel in the states, and at 4 am I heard footsteps. I thought it was someone outside the door. It was winter, I didn't feel like someone had opened a window, I was 5 floors up so no one could of broken in. It must be late night revelers going to bed. I then heard the steps again, and as I was groggy, thought...no...but all of a sudden, I felt the weight of a 200 lb man on my feet and legs holding me down....and I HEARD, but did not FEEL the breath of a man in my ear. I popped up out of bed so fast, and turned on the light, there was no one. My hair up on my arms, I grabbed my phone. The phone was not working at all. I looked down the hallway, there was a closet for coats...and the light was on. I grabbed a trash can, stomped down there to take a swing. I kicked opened the closet door, and swung....but there was only a swinging light bulb. ..... believe me .... I believe you. The sound of that entity breathing in my ear ... was very frightening. I BELIEVE YOU.

I see a definite face, wild gray hair and leaning sort of forward. It looks like an older man to me but could be an old woman. Looks like the figure is moving forward so you’d probably have noticed it in there if it was visible at the time. It’s an incredible picture. I think you’ve really caught something here! I definitely see the face too, and definitely see a man, but to me, it looked like he was looking at the floor in front of him a bit as he was walking forward, and maybe with his hands clasped behind his back? Like as though he was thinking over something, idk. I also thought his hair appeared blonde, so not an older man. Anyway, seemed pretty clear that was somebody, either way... freaky!

How creepy/exciting to have your own experience in the crypt. Having a strange man breathing in your ear is not the most fun way to have a ghost encounter though. The photo of the library looks convincing too. It definitely looks like a figure in black leaning forward. Very cool 😀

I learned some new stuff about the place that I didn’t know from your lovely video. Very interesting about your experience in the crypt, every time I have been to the crypt I haven’t been able to stay very long. On one visit I felt so sick when entering I just had to turn and get out, on another visit it felt like someone was standing right behind me but when I turned around no one was there. I also went on a ghost tour around the castle at night and the crypt was even worse, it had such an oppressive feeling nobody on the tour would enter. I also felt very uneasy and very cold in the stables and I also had a funny turn on oak staircase. 👻

The two Charles' were just as terrible, Cromwell and the roundheads hijacking what would've been the English revolution and turning it into a personal dictatorship has been an absolute travesty for the entire planet. Had Cromwell not taken power instead of the working class, there would've been no liberal desire to return to monarchy, no British Empire, no USA, no WW1 (at least in any form we recognise)... Things would be wildly different, and most likely for the better.

When I was 9 I was taken to Thornton Abbey at Thornton Curtis in North Lincolnshire only the gatehouse still stands. I was walking round with my family and felt the sense of someone following me but no one was there. Later my family was talking to the owners at that time and they told us a monk had sold Abbey property so had been walled in in the church his remains had been found sitting at a table. He is apparently known to haunt the gatehouse. I am a sensitive but didn't know I was at that time, I was very scared of the place and when taken back I refused to go in

This was fascinating, and you do such a great job with filming and narration. I believe you experienced something paranormal with the breathing in your ear. When I was a teenager, I heard my first name called clear as a bell - also in my left ear - and there was absolutely nobody around - and it wasn't said across the room, it was right in my ear. The voice was friendly, so while it was extraordinary, it wasn't scary. Perhaps you were picking up on the personality of the breather, and you instinctively felt chilled?

I enjoy your presentation and stories about places I may or may not ever get a chance to visit for myself. I would like to mention that the experience you had with the breathy sounds in your ear can never really be stamped as 100% real by anyone but you should be glad to have had this happen to you,, it's your own little secret reach into something most never will know and you don't ever feel as if you need to get validation from others because there will be those that will try to make you dismiss it for whatever reason.

It was completely bizarre. Very odd and it was just next to me. I knew immediately it was male. No doubt. But it made me jump so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the video and journeys to a new place for sure.👻🙏

I think you had a supernatural experience for sure! Very creepy! I think the photo you got of an old woman is incredible!! I will definitely visit this castle when I travel to England next June (2025) 🎉

Oh definitely visit it and you could combine it with Bath, Bristol and Devon, Cornwall etc. There’s lots to see in the area and I’ll cover more from the region in future for sure. But check the opening hours and you may find you’ll need a whole day for the castle, as well as the lovely village of Dunster that you can walk to from the castle. They sell lovely pasties there 👻🙏🙋‍♀️

38:16;that façade just reminds me of Hampton Court,I just can't get away from that. I love Hampton Court. Odd to think that in 1415 during the Battle of Agincourt,it was almost a century before it even existed! Should that shock me? I dunno. But IT DOES.🤷‍♂️

Love the video!! Amazing haunted castle! Great job! Do you think there is a connection between the crypt and the stone staircase? Instead of something on the stairs projecting into the crypt (through the small window) it’s something in the crypt projecting onto the stone stairs? Your encounter with the ghost sniffer could be two things: 1. A slightly disgruntled ghost annoyed by all the living beings intruding into it’s area. 2. A curious ghost sniffing the neck of a pretty lady. Were you wearing perfume? Both situations would be creepy. Again, I love this video. So many ghost encounters. I would be frightened to either stay, work, or visit the castle. If I ever get a chance to travel to the UK, Dunster Castle would be on my list. Thanks for making the video. Keep up the excellent content. 🐑🐑🐑👻👻👻

This is rather special, I’m related to the Luttrell family through my grandmother in Australia. I’ve had the fortune to visit Dunster, and the castle twice. Can’t say I had any encounters.

You should do Littlecote House near Hungerford, its the spookiest place ever, it used to be open to the public, I have been there quite a few times back in the day and its not for the faint hearted!

@@ghostcasebook1266 yuk yes, that ghost is a creep ( how come he got to hang around the living ??? I'd honestly like to know .) I've heard ghosts too, my Poppa and my Dad, Only in the first few days of their death,, very close to my ear also. Just a short lived thing. My favorite Ghost Story (and probably would have blown my mind) was The Girl rushing the man through The Library , only to be met by The Ghost in Grey saying "come along" and they both vanishing THAT would be awesome. But your one was not awesome, and my packet of crisps would be trembling also .. If you are going to do more of these ghost adventures, you are going to have to get serious about if you want to have another experience or not.. Don't wear Silver for a start, always carry water on you - carry your water bottle - use it to wash your hands when you exit buildings. There are 2 devices ( apps) you can get , one does green stick men where the ghosts are , and the other uses radio waves to pick up their voices - if youd like to ask questions. Upload them onto your filming laptop to super enhance the whole ghost interaction for us all .
