Old Blood Noise Endeavours Dark Star V2

I was very kindly lent this pedal by my mate Michael at Emmergy FX, to try out and film a demo with, and it made a big impression!
Dark Star is a tri-mode reverb pedal, which is capable of producing some extremely unconventional sounds...and I think I need to get myself one at some point...

i feel like having a mode for ctrl 2 might be more useful - bitcrusher amount and feedback tend to be more useful to control

Very nice demo. I love love love my Dark Star... or should i say my Dark Stars, love it so much that i've got 2 of them, one for each of my pedalboards. It's my favorite pedal ever for sure, it's so inspiring!

Why does it do that stuttery effect on the upper octave i wonder? it's interesting, pitch shifting artifacts don't normaly sound like that, it feels like the sort of effect you get when you mess with the sample size in doing FFTs/make it so they don't overlap quite right

Yeah, I assume there's some weird glitching going on with the chip. But I like the effect!

It looks like a Spin FV-1 chip so it is probably a DSP limitation. I wonder how generic the circuit is overall - i.e. what separates this pedal from a basic FP-1 build aside from the EEPROM code?

@@ArrakisOCE isn't the Spin FV-1 pretty good? a lot of mid to higher end stuff tends to use it. older chips can do it without aliasing. shimmer's a very old effect. i'd say it's probably intentional.

@@SisterRose yes, It’s a legendary chip for sure and most of the boutique digital pedal makers today leverage the same chip and generic build with custom programming to get the sounds they are after. I think it outputs at 24bit/48kHz which isn’t too limiting given it’s age and cost. The chip has computational bandwidth limitations which may account for the glitches and things like parallel pitch shifting, inability to effect dry signal during sustain modes for example.

It's definitely a lot of fun! I run my whole board in mono, so the lack of stereo doesn't bother me. But I get how it could be a deal-breaker for other people... unless you just buy two of them? 😝

No. All reverb pedals are digital, with the exception of a handful of spring reverb pedals that incorporate an actual spring in their design.
