Old BMW Failed California Smog Test | BMW E28 Build | Sea Foam Cheap Fix?

Got my smog done a few days ago and failed!!

That m30 sounds like it has major vacuum leaks, I bet if you fix the leaks and give it a basic tune-up (plugs, cap rotor, and wires depending on condition) it would pass smog and run a whole lot better.

The trick my local guy uses is to get the engine really hot before running the test. The M30 runs cleaner when it hot. Good luck.

If you had a vacuum leak at your oil dipstick, not only do they check that, but your car won't be running as it should. I'm sure you've replaced it by now ;)

CA has the most stringent rules. WA just did away with DEQ checks, completely!!!

Swang & Bang my 84 533i would probably not have passed in 2010 when I had it in Stockton. I sold it off, transmission was going out (again) and car had half a million miles. Good luck with your car. Selling it to someone in WA is an option if it just can't pass. Best regards. 👍

After turning it back on it sounded like it had a cam lol. I have the same car in the same color just with the 2.7L m20 motor instead. Is the resonator delete really annoying on the highway? I have a muffler delete but your car sounds so meaty.

Buhnanuh it definitely has a loud drone cruising 65-70 I think it’s the style of mufflers

Bro nice car, just subscribed! Quick question, did this end up reducing your NO emissions? I went in today and ran a pretest on a 92 Benz and failed it because of the high amount. I did have my catalytic converter replaced but yea. If you can give me an update, that would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Joshua S. Vazquez thank you 🙏🏼 I haven’t gone to do a retake yet. I have a pretty large list to go through before I take it in. Have you performed a tune up yet? Spark plugs, cap and rotor( if applicable), oil change, and bring it in at operating temperatures?

Hey bro what’s going on thanks for the support. Sorry to hear about the fAiled emissions test, probably one of most stressful feelings. Yes you feel a little difference in throttle response and idle. One thing I recommend doing if your e30 has one is cleaning the idle control valve, and if you don’t mind me asking what part did you fail?

Swang & Bang It got tested last November, I was told it was the catalytic converter. So I let the car sit since then. Now with the weather getting warmer I tried starting it last weekend and it’s running pretty rough (I’m sure it’s the old gas) so I want to do the “seafoam challenge” before I start working on it, just have to find a place to do it 🤔lol

@@SwangBangCo Do the mass airflow sensor, too. You might think about getting an oil catch can to extend the life of the engine as well, although, I'm not sure they let you test emission with an oil catch can hooked up. Changing the PCV valve should be a cinch, too. Don't forget to make sure the air filter is clean, too. You might want to search some information on adding a small but of acetone to your fuel. Apparently a very small amount reduces surface tension and keeps things clean. Do your own research and make your own call. Remember, test with a hot engine -- maybe drive 1-2 hours before going in for the test. Good luck!

California is b.s. i still haven't passed smog on my altima didnt put it on a non op now they want to charge me like 800bucks for the time it wasn't even being used!!! Wtf never even got anything in the mail??? No wonder people flip out and go shoot people😂😂😂😂

My tags were supposed to expire in July of 2019 I paid my registration that year even though it didn't pass they are charging me for 20 21 22 and 23 which is due in a month! Never got anything in the mail regarding late charges yearly registration Etc when I took it off the insurance obviously I got a notice saying that I needed to re-instate and show proof of insurance l was 14 bucks
