Intake valve isn't seating properly giving blowback through the carb that's why your getting fuel coming out the carb Adam hope you get it sorted mate

Just as a point of interest, I was watching mustie's latest video today, the one where he's building his Dingo style dune buggy. He's just bought and installed a new carb on that engine, and do you know what? It was piddling petrol out by the gallon. As is often the case with replacement carbs, the float level was not preset, which meant he had to go through again to set the float. I didn't see you checking the float level on this carb either. If you did, then carry on and ignore the next bit. Setting the float level on a Briggs and Stratton carb is about as easy as it gets. With the carb off the engine, and float bowl removed, flip the top section of the carb upside down - the float should hang parallel to the face of the carb top. If it settles anywhere else, it needs adjusting. Adjustment is by bending the tab that pushes against the fuel inlet needle, and you may need to bend that tab to correct the float level. It is imperative that the top of the float is parallel with the casting when held upside down. If the float is too close to the casting, the fuel level will be too high, and will cause leakage as you experienced with yours. Now then....... Let's prove a point? Back to first principles...... Drain the carb and turn off the fuel tap. Then, hoik out that sparkplug splash a drop of petrol straight down the plughole (two stroke is best for that, but not absolutely essential). Put in a new plug, or one that's known to be good, see if the engine will fire up with the carb out of the equation - I'm sure you've seen Taryl and mustie doing this? If the engine starts, it'll run for a few seconds and die. That'll be enough to prove timing, ignition and compression. If that works, then it's going to be the carb at fault. If the engine still refuses to bark off and run for a few seconds, then it's more likely that you have other issues going on - rusty valve seats, incorrect valve clearance, timing being off, faulty points and/or condenser, or low compression. I know you know all these things, but I feel you may need to set out a roadmap for yourself to get out of dark and gloomy woods you're in right now. Don't forget too, you do have electric start on that one, and that's a definite bonus when you're fault finding on a machine like this, and, if you can get it strike up on a splash of juice, you could drip feed it with petrol, mustie fashion, or keep whiffing it with starting fluid, just enough to keep it going, Taryl and James Condon fashion, and to prove the engine is otherwise good.

I'd check the valve clearances before going further - especially the inlet valve. It doesn't take much to do it, especially if you just check they do have something like a sensible clearance. I've have similar symptoms before that turned out to be no clearance at all on the inlet valve.

Might be valves? "Easy spin" type starting briggs engines, the cam slightley holds a valve open thrugh most of the compression stroke for a compression release effect. If its worn, there might not be any valve stem end gap causeing the valve to not shut at all. Mine was like this & it kinda threw me for a loop trying to figure out what point on the cam to adjust the valves from, "I dont remember but I have that info somewere & can dig it up if its relevent"...✌👍

Try using your pliers at 90 degrees to the clip. Too, that fuel pipe needs changing. If the carb needs 2 minutes to fill then thexsipply is not enough.

Carb is flooded, petrol dripping out the bottom, set the needles to 1 1/2 turns out. Don't use any choke or brake cleaner. Pull to clear and start. once it starts, adjust main jet needle as needed. Is carb link attached? If this not help to start, check the float is level and the float valve shuts off the fuel properly. Good luck!.

Those spring clip hose clamps are installed because they provide a constant clamping tension, even if the hose rots a bit, or vibration is horrific, or temps swing wildly. A worm clamp (jubilee clip to you civilized brits, lol) can strip by being over torqued, a worn one can vibrate loose due to backlash in the screw/strap relationship, or loosen over time due to the hose taking a set. I loathe spring clamps too, but there is a logical reason they're employed
@TerryLawrence001
@TerryLawrence001 Жыл бұрын
Those clips are superior to jubilee clips because they continuously put force on the hose no matter how the tube gets with age. A jubilee clip stays at the size you set it and a leak will form as the tubing ages. Just cut notches into a cheap pair of pliers to catch the clips in the jaws. Clamp a pair of pliers in the vise, nose up and drill a hole into the jaws at 45 degrees and straight down. The grooves will catch the clips and they hold on to it very good and you can grip the clips at straight on and 45 degrees or what ever angle you pick.

Fuel leaking from under carb when trying to pull start it, is the cylinder head bolts tight 🤔
@Equiluxe1

I think that there is some blow back through the carb, when the engine turns over petrol drips from the carb, either the inlet valve is sticking or the valve timing is out or the clearance is wrong.

Did valve timing get the better of you again. Second hand motors that have been fiddled could be put together with one tooth out. If the valves where ground but the gap not adgusted, they wont seat with proper dwell time. Just enough to get a quick pop out of it. I love your other channel too! Time lapse drives around parts are cool too.

When you purchase that Carb., there was a needle set to 3 turns, but you turned it to 2 or 1 1/2. I would have left the Carb. set to original before adjusting. Do a pressure test. Fix the fuel flow. It's to slow!

Those updraft carbs can be east to flood the engine when choked. No doubt the gas dripping out is from being flooded from the choke. I would set the high speed setting at one to one and half turns out. I also seen a suggestion to change the plug. I agree.. if it got fouled.. it may not spark regularly. It seemed to me it was getting too much full rather than not enough. I don't think the problem is in the carb. Just too much fuel. It's not leaking when just sitting. If fuel flow was too slow.. it would at least run till the bowl emptied out.

I really hope that this information will and does help you out with it also. This Jon I know those from the back of my hand. I'd also change that spark plug out to. Sometimes they do not run after being wet either. It's A tail tail sign of A bad.,or possibly weak spark plug to. I know from just looking at the fuel flow coming through that rubber fuel line hose it's not right at all. For sure it's supposed to have more fuel coming out than A trickle flow feed for sure.
@Herbybandit
@Herbybandit Жыл бұрын
I can't remember, did you do a compression test? Looks like you might need to whip the head of and take a look at the seats, I've had issues with briggs especially not running until I've lapped the valves. And an answer to your fuel line clamp! If you used the correct tool I.e. pliers with the groove length ways, you'd be laughing! Instead of riding the struggle bus. That type of clamp keeps pressure on the fuel line so it doesn't leak as the pipe ages and shrinks, a Jubilee clip will release the pressure causing a leak leading to a fire, that's why you don't use screw hose clamps like Jubilee on a fuel line.

If that hose is clogged up any at all. It will not allow it to constantly pull in fuel through the fuel line. It's should have more fuel flow than that. It's starving for fuel believe it.,or not Norfolk man cave. Try changing out that fuel line rubber hose. with A different one. Cause the fuel eats up the rubber inside of them when setting up to long. From the ethanol fuel out now days. It turns those hose to try and gummy like texture inside of it plugging it up and blocking off the correct fuel flow through the fuel line to continuously fill the float blow up while it's running. I know you may think it's plenty.,or looks like it to you that is. Those half to have A constant fuel flow feed even under load while it's running to.
@johnhicks735

If you change out.,or another term for is called swap out. That rubber hose fuel line that Briggs and Stratton updraft carbureted engine will deliver the proper amount of fuel down to the float blow to continually stay running under load and idling to for yah norman.
