This is a great video on how to check a lamp to see if it’s in working order! Now I can go look for one with some confidence!

Ok so first ya hit me with the birthday lantern because I'm a 9/66 ( MIND BLOWN)! I just went to an estate sale and bought this vintage lantern because I love all things vintage, so now I'm off to the garage to test it. Thanks for posting this great video it came handy.

A leather pump cup should be oiled with neets foot oil. To restore a very dry cup remove the pump turn it upside down with the cup pointing up and fill it with the neets foot oil and keep it like that for a day or more until the oil has saturated the leather. You should be able to fold back the cup if it is pliable enough. I've restored 75 year old leather cups this way and if there isn't a cut or deep crack in the leather this has always worked for me.

I got some good deals from the PX/BX back in the day too. They would hold onto Coleman stuff forever, then liquidate it all at once for a great price.

Lol, yeah MWR will be one of the first things to close for shtf. I grew up around Pope AFB/Ft.Bragg, my dad still lives in the area. I tried to get stationed to Seymour Johnson AB the whole time I was in, but they kept me out west.

Great detailed video. May I add to your great video? The old 220 lanterns sometimes have a plugged tube that goes from the check valve to the top of the fount. It may not be the check valve if it does not pump up. I always change the filler cap gasket. It is possible to change the one piece gasket and keep the cap original rather than buying one that does not match. I always take the pump out, inspect it and turn the leather pump towards the top while rubbing the 2 in one oil in for a better seal. I put my thumb over the hole on the pump handle when it is down and pumped up to see if it rises more than an inch per second from the check valve leaking. Many new check valves leak slightly and should be closed after pumping up as you said. Many new generators do not completely shout the fuel off either. But the tip cleaner should almost shut it off. I can tell you how to change the one piece filler cap gasket, if you want to change one. I hope my advice can be helpful. I learn new things everyday. I am kinda old.

+Quality Made In The USA Great advice! I love the 220's for night fishing. I have three of them now I think, lol. One was a "parts lantern" that someone gave me, I'm 99% sure it'll run just fine once I get it all cleaned up. One that I'm still trying to figure out is my birthday lantern, a 1984 CL2 that keeps flickering. I've cleaned it spotless, gave it all new parts, it still does it. There's something up with that design that's flawed.

It's extremely rare if ever that the tube would plug up. The only thing that goes through the tube is air from the pump. Not saying it can't happen, but it's extremely rare. I have two lanterns that have never given me a problem Coleman is one rare company that doesn't make products with planned obsolescence.

I just got a year stamp 56, yesterday mint condition, fired right up with the old fuel that was in it. It had not been used in over 30 years.

I really don't think pure fuel goes bad. It's the additives they put in automotive fuels that go bad. I've got a 3-burner stove that still has Coleman fuel in it, just not quite as old as yours, but still fired up 4 years ago with no issues. I'd bet it will again if I needed it to.

The only time you have to cover that pump hole with your thumb is when you are stroking the pump to pressurize the fount. You don't need to cover the hole when you turn it to the left to unlock the check valve or when you turn it to the right to lock the check valve. If the check valve is doing its job, you won't lose air pressure in the fount.

I have bad hearing, so I can’t hear air escaping. I put a big squirt of dish soap in a spray bottle and fill it up with water to spray on fount cap and look for bubbles. Just like you do with gas lines for your home or trailer.

Look at that clean brass!! You are a good explaining this.. My 228 big hat I replaced the generator but I notice I have to turn the needle valve a couple time then it will start feeding air or fuel. It fires up and is working on that end I am wondering what is causing this?
@WiggysWilderness
@WiggysWilderness 7 жыл бұрын
It sounds like there's something in the generator orifice that's clogging it intermittently. I'd take the generator out and look at the insides. Pay special attention to the generator tip, there may be some kind of manufacturing defect that's causing it, but give it a good cleaning with some carburetor cleaner just to make sure there's nothing else in there. If the problem keeps up, flush the tank with fresh fuel and then I'd get this stuff called "Seafoam" (they sell it at most walmarts in the automotive section near the gas additives) and put a cap full or two in the tank with the fuel and run the lantern through a full tank to help clear out any carbon build up. Worst case scenario, the generator you got had something wrong with it and you'll have to replace it, or try your hand at rebuilding it if you're really ambitious.

Wiggy's, I found a new generator in my parts box installed it fired right up. I took the old generator and dismantled it, the asbestos guide tube crumbled into dust. Pulled it completely out pulled the spring and jet soaked them in Carb cleaner while I cooked all the carbon crud out of the generator tube with a propane torch and scrubbed it out. I cleaned the control rod with steel wool took out the new generator and reinstalled the old one and it fired right up like new. Is it a problem not having the asbestos guide tube in the generator? I had no problem guiding the needle through the spring into the jet nipple if that is what it's function is. Thanks~ and yes I use Sea Foam in my truck and motorcycle..

If it runs good, I wouldn't change a thing. The only function anything inside the generator has is to guide the pricker rod or to slow down the flow of fuel so it has time to vaporize and not surge. I've heard of people rebuilding generators by taking all the guts out except the pricker rod and wrapping it in wire, that's an option if it ever has any problems. I'm going to do something similar with one of mine, it has a bad flicker, so I'm going to pack a little brass wool in the generator to stabilize the flow a little more and hopefully that'll cure the flickering problem.

Hey! On the 220F. How do I get the burner assembly off? Seems it is screwed in below the chrome collar. The valve assembly is obstructing the burner from either threading out or just lifting out...

sir im buying my first one a powerhouse ,what it means to pre burn the mantels and is it necessary?and what brands of mantels are good quality?thank you GOD bless you
@WiggysWilderness
@WiggysWilderness 7 жыл бұрын
To pre burn the mantels, you install the mantles on the burner tubes and touch a lighter to the bottom of the mantle until they catch on fire. They'll start smoking and turning to ash. When they are done smoking and have been burned over the surface of the mantle, then you can light the lantern. It's not 100% necessary to pre burn them, but if you don't it may make it harder to light the lantern and cause more flames to appear, and the mantles won't "inflate" as well, they'll look like shriveled up raisins and won't put out as much light. The best mantles I've found are the Peerless 2C-HG mantles that you can buy from www.oldcolemanparts.com they last a lot longer than the Coleman mantles and they're brighter too. God bless and hope this helps!
