If you loved this one, try "The Raven That Refused to Sing," which is the title track of the album this song is from. Plenty of lush strings, and quite possibly the most emotional song out any of the hundreds of songs Wilson has written.

I'm so pleased that Steven Wilson is able to do this for you. He is one of the best. I have started delving into some of the work of the people who he has worked with extensively, namely his bassist Nick Beggs, who also is a wonderfully talented song writer and singer. Just getting into his band The Mute Gods and I am falling in love.

in Steven's words “It has an extraordinary guitar solo. Guthrie’s playing is just sublime. That, for me, is the memory of this song. I had done a solo on the demo, knowing that I wanted an anthemic, epic solo at the end. In the studio, we did four or five takes, and each time Guthrie would reinvent the idea of what the solo could be. “The particular solo we chose was either the first or the second one. It was so inspired and had such a beautiful sense of logic and storytelling to it. It’s one take, unedited, and it’s just unbelievably brilliant. And it’s improvised - he didn’t plan anything. It was such a moving experience to hear him play it. I was almost in tears."

@bloodtruck3554
@bloodtruck3554 3 жыл бұрын
@@Diesel_Budgie I do agree with you there. As far as Wilson's work goes there is alot of arrangements that are worth looking into, every piece of his for the most part is something new or a reiteration of from his days with No Man, Or Porcupine Tree. But I highlight Heart Attack on a Layby for its uniqueness to his soundtrack overall. Other than his project Storm Corrosion with Mikael Akerfeldt, that song stands alone as as a simple vocal arrangement that doesn't actually go out of it's way to be complicated. It allows the dissonance to do the work and it just sort of suck you while giving the illusion of harmony while changing almost nothing. If you want my suggestion on one with movements I would vote for Ancestral from the Solo catalogue, and My Ashes from the PT catalogue.

I was sad when I heard about Porcupine Tree and wasn't too excited about his solo work until I listened to Grace for Drowning. That, then Raven that Refused to Sing and then Hand. Cannot. Erase. And there were 3 solo albums that put prog in a nut shell for me. Those 3 albums are epic. So I fit into both armies, Tool and Steven Wilson. And it is surprising to me that for his solo work Steven Wilson took a back seat on guitar which he is exceptional at when hearing his guitar work with Porcupine Tree. Steven Wilson is the most important person in prog right now and has been. Even with his newer albums even though they are pop prog they are still a testament to Steven Wilson and his ability to just do his thing and do it well.

That solo makes me cry every single time Geebz. So so emotional, personal & beyond gorgeous. Guthrie Govan absolutely smashed it out of the park on that solo. Nick Beggs on bass & Marco Minnemann on drums are the perfect compliments. The lyrics dealing with loss hit home really hard for me. Such a sad yet uplifting song.

Yes! Love this! I always gets excited when you do any Steven Wilson work. His chord writing is so brilliant, he presents you with something almost familiar and you expect it to go one way but it doesn't and yet it makes perfect sense where it does go. Longtime PT fan but this was my first time with this song...absolutely mind-blown, that was beautiful and holy hell what a solo! Right after you talked about the solo, when it started up again..oh good lawd he started wailing those huge bends...can you get chicken skin in your bones? Cause I did.

Yo, guitar teacher here, cool little thing I think happens at the end of the solo, Guthrie knocks a string off the saddle but keeps going. Badass. I’ve got a feeling he’s playing a boutique jazzmaster type guitar in the studio which it’s easy to do that on. I feel this is the best solo ever in the typical sense of what we regard a normal solo to be (if you get what I mean)

wonder if he used a different guitar when you saw him, since I've read comments from Guthrie that the guitar on this track had a Sustainer pickup installed (made by Fernandes; Steve Hackett's main guitar is a Fernandes with one built-in). It does the same job as an eBow, but on all six strings simultaneously.

@derp derpin it depends, most sessions players you´ll meet will know a lot of theory, also any classical or jazz musician. Rock songwriters are usually the ones who don´t care about theory that much. (not saying that anyone is superior)

I keep seeing this kind of statement about some great musicians, and sometimes I wonder if it isn't because of modesty from them. Like they know some theory, but don't feel like they know a lot for a musician and downplay the amount of knowledge they have in the theory field.

Very neat song honestly. Steven Wilson is a genius and he still shine after all these years of doing music. Great song to analyze. If I may suggest, you should take a listen to When You Die, or Colours by the Knivesout Collective. Great underground band/artist/whatever you wanna call em that channels the sounds of early Pink Floyd (Colours has more that sound) and When You Die sounds actually kinda in the same vein as this one does sort of.

So I had never heard of this artist, but I really enjoyed the song. You mirrored what I was thinking in the way the cool unexpected chord change and tempo took me on a journey... and holy unexpected guitar solo! The guitar had so much emotion, it sounded like pleading. Never heard of Guthrie but now I’ll have a listen. Edit: I just noticed something I have to ask your opinion on. First listen I thought it was unusual how the oboe just poked its head into the song for a few seconds. Also the guitar solo started with such a strange sound that I didn't realize it was a guitar at first. After listening a couple of times, and bare with me, I think the guitar was IMITATING the oboe. At 3:53 in the song the oboe and guitar are holding hands and walking together. At 4:20 the guitar goes off on its own for a few seconds and the oboe calls in the background. Then the oboe continues for a few bars deep in the background and just as it fades away at 5:10 the guitar SEEMLESSLY picks up where it left off, to the point it is almost difficult to distinguish between the two. Then the guitar does an incredible oboe impression before it shows itself! Do you think the guitar intentionally disguised itself as the oboe there? It sounds like it to me! Beautiful. Timestamps are from the song, not your video, FYI.
