Just getting into his band The Mute Gods and I am falling in love.

in Steven's words “It has an extraordinary guitar solo. Guthrie’s playing is just sublime. That, for me, is the memory of this song. I had done a solo on the demo, knowing that I wanted an anthemic, epic solo at the end. In the studio, we did four or five takes, and each time Guthrie would reinvent the idea of what the solo could be. “The particular solo we chose was either the first or the second one. It was so inspired and had such a beautiful sense of logic and storytelling to it. It’s one take, unedited, and it’s just unbelievably brilliant. And it’s improvised - he didn’t plan anything. It was such a moving experience to hear him play it. I was almost in tears."

@bloodtruck35543 жыл бұрын
@@Diesel_Budgie I do agree with you there. As far as Wilson's work goes there is alot of arrangements that are worth looking into, every piece of his for the most part is something new or a reiteration of from his days with No Man, Or Porcupine Tree. But I highlight Heart Attack on a Layby for its uniqueness to his soundtrack overall. Other than his project Storm Corrosion with Mikael Akerfeldt, that song stands alone as as a simple vocal arrangement that doesn't actually go out of it's way to be complicated. It allows the dissonance to do the work and it just sort of suck you while giving the illusion of harmony while changing almost nothing. If you want my suggestion on one with movements I would vote for Ancestral from the Solo catalogue, and My Ashes from the PT catalogue.

You have to give a hat tip to Jess Cope for making the video match the theme of the song. The song is great, the addition of the video drives home the connection. I hope Jess was paid well.

Way back in the early days o rock n roll the electric guitar was to mimic the sound of the sax. There's no better representation than the ending solo on this song. That was the best sax solo I've ever heard.

Steven Wilson's music, and I'm including Porcupine Tree's music, has taken a hold of me in a way that's hard to explain it was fun to watch his reaction to Guthrie's guitar solo

Every guitar player I know says this is their favorite guitar solo of all time. Maybe it’s because I was in a prog rock band and those are just the kind of musicians I’m connected to.

@derp derpin it depends, most sessions players you´ll meet will know a lot of theory, also any classical or jazz musician. Rock songwriters are usually the ones who don´t care about theory that much. (not saying that anyone is superior)
@teddy67323 жыл бұрын
I keep seeing this kind of statement about some great musicians, and sometimes I wonder if it isn't because of modesty from them. Like they know some theory, but don't feel like they know a lot for a musician and downplay the amount of knowledge they have in the theory field.

Very neat song honestly. Steven Wilson is a genius and he still shine after all these years of doing music. Great song to analyze. If I may suggest, you should take a listen to When You Die, or Colours by the Knivesout Collective. Great underground band/artist/whatever you wanna call em that channels the sounds of early Pink Floyd (Colours has more that sound) and When You Die sounds actually kinda in the same vein as this one does sort of.

So I had never heard of this artist, but I really enjoyed the song. You mirrored what I was thinking in the way the cool unexpected chord change and tempo took me on a journey... and holy unexpected guitar solo! The guitar had so much emotion, it sounded like pleading. Never heard of Guthrie but now I’ll have a listen. Edit: I just noticed something I have to ask your opinion on. First listen I thought it was unusual how the oboe just poked its head into the song for a few seconds. Also the guitar solo started with such a strange sound that I didn't realize it was a guitar at first. After listening a couple of times, and bare with me, I think the guitar was IMITATING the oboe. At 3:53 in the song the oboe and guitar are holding hands and walking together. At 4:20 the guitar goes off on its own for a few seconds and the oboe calls in the background. Then the oboe continues for a few bars deep in the background and just as it fades away at 5:10 the guitar SEEMLESSLY picks up where it left off, to the point it is almost difficult to distinguish between the two. Then the guitar does an incredible oboe impression before it shows itself! Do you think the guitar intentionally disguised itself as the oboe there? It sounds like it to me! Beautiful. Timestamps are from the song, not your video, FYI.

Used to go to a lot of Jazz Fusion gigs back in the late 80's early 90's and I remember that whenever I heard a particularly beautiful or audacious line from a solo it would always make me chuckle with joy. Guthrie just made me laugh my ass off!
