Gavin Harrison is generally considered one of the best progressive rock drummers to ever have lived. The fact that he only reluctantly accepts that he's a rock drummer at all just adds to the magic. He did an album of big band arrangements of Porcupine Tree songs that is worth checking out just for the experience.

Porcupine Tree isn't nearly as popular as they ought to be. If you like this, I definitely suggest trying Sleep Together. They're the kind of band that uses a lot of different styles, some others I'd suggest would be Trains, Blackest Eyes, Open Car, Sound of Muzak, they're all quite different from Anesthetize but just as good (imo).

Its weird. I don't particularly like Sleep Together. Its a grower but it wasn't as immediately powerful as Even Less. Or even the Sky Moves Sideways. The way that Wilson's voice appeared like he was just next to your face in The Sky Moves Sideways really got me as a 17 year old. I had never heard something like that. And the chord sequence in the verse of Even Less is hauntingly pretty.

The complete package: music visionary composer, director, artist, editor, and producer! Wilson said he doesn't want to be the most skilled virtuoso in the band; instead, he carefully selects the incredible talents he needs to bring his compositions to fruition ... he shares his musical vision, points them in the right direction, and then turns them loose! Brilliant, they're all top-drawer musicians. Kudos on this selection!

I'm a drummer and Gavin is an amazing, incredibly amazing drummer. Pineapple Thief is another great band with him sitting behind the drums. He also plays with King Crimson in a trio of drummers on tour.

This band, this song in particular, defines what one as a fan of progressive rock or metal understands, loves and perpetuates: it is expressing an idea, a story and everything in the song does it organically at the same time. It doesn't matter if it lasts 30 minutes, there is enough coherence and musical complexity. Nothing is left over, nothing is missing, everything fits.

This song is from the album Fear of a Blank Planet, which is a concept album about the effects of the internet age on kids, all against the backdrop of the concurrent overmedication and overdiagnosis of mental illnesses in children. I don't think Stephen would ever claim that there aren't truly sick kids who need medicating, I think he's just saying that it became a crutch for psychiatrists to fall back on, not to mention a lucrative one, that had very real and negative effects on some kids.

Welcome my friend the Porcupine Tree. This band started out as a joke in the late 80s, and slowly progressed to this. The lead singer of this band is also the producer of Opeth, but he has done numerous other projects, including office of strategic influence., his own solar work, and has digitally remastered several albums into Dolby Atmos. Most of their songs are not as long as this, but this is for sure their greatest masterpiece.. I went to see them live in 2008, and although it was a very small venue, it was probably one of the best shows I’ve ever been to. but there are several more things to explore now that you have explored Porcupine Tree.. your fun is just beginning.

I got into Porcupine Tree via Opeth and they along with the extended Steven Wilson material(including the very overlooked No-Man) became my favorite thing is music. They focus more on immersive textures over overly complicated guitar riffs and solos. I even like the very early material. Like On the Sunday of Life and Tarquins Seaweed farm. Because its psychedelic and unhinged. The kind of atmosphere stuff like Don't Hug me I'm Scared has. He is apparently abit inspired by disturbing british childrens television like that. And in some of the earlier material it shows.

The multiple sections is what I love about progressive music like this song, or Opeth. It really feels like storytelling. Each section is a different part of the whole journey, with its own message and tone and growth into the next stage of the journey. You can't get that feeling with a typical 3 minute song that goes "verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus".

I can understand what you mean that you listen to certain songs or bands when in certain moods. For me, I have to be in the right mood to enjoy things like Motley Crue. There are several artists, however, who actually create the mood. Buckethead, Haken, Porcupine Tree, Pineapple Thief, Karnivool, Tool and others are examples where if the song comes up on my playlist or iTunes, it creates the mood.
