Anyways, since most kids were poor it would peg leg it for at least 400 feet up to like 8-900 feet with a little driving trickery. Hard as stones ,they'd usually last half a summer doing at least 2 or 3 good smokeys daily. 😂

They’ll put a $80-100k+ into a vehicle but never bother with fresh tires every few years. Brake fluid was probably like Hershey syrup too. My neighbor still drives his 64 Vette around on 20 year old BFG’s from when he had it restored. His logic: “Waste of money. These tires look new. They still have 90% tread.” Lunacy.

Even happens in the pits at dragstrips - several years back a dragster driver did a burnout in the pits at an event my sister and her husband were running a stocker. Dude lost it and ran into my sister's trailer - he didn't have any safety equipment on and he died.

I learned this stuff when I was the tinder age of 16: had a Trans Am with a Positrac, so whenever it would snow, bunch of us, would head to the nearest big, empty parking lot to do donuts and slides and stuff like that. So skid control got to be second nature for me, and has literally saved my life several times.

As a guy that owns a C3 (and a C1, and had a C2), the C2/3 independent rear will do that hop, and get sideways if you're not careful. If you don't know how to control it, especially if you change throttle significantly, on or off, it'll do this. Hook, and hook hard on whatever direction it's pointed that second. Ask how I know (no porches or anything else was harmed in my learning curve days.) The solid rear axle on my '63 Impala is a lot more predictable, and a better burnout car because of it.

Car fishtails, driver gets scared and lifts, the tires grab, and you're off for a ride. Once he's in the dirt, there's no saving it. There must be a deviation in the asphalt, a slick spot; a few cars fishtailed at the same spot, but didn't let off and drove through it.

I don't understand, Ive owned pretty much every kind of of muscle car there is. I've done some nasty burnouts and never have ended up in somebody's yard??? Not saying it won't ever happen. If you know your car and your skill you will be just fine.

Smoke the tires in a manual trans in 1st or 2nd gear and you break traction, then when you abruptly chop the throttle the engine breaking instantly causes the rear tires to hook up and skid. You have a split second to react. You see it happen to cars like AC Cobra's.

Easy to do in a stock tire C2. Not a lot of tire fits under there, but the C2 chassis was developed to make racing more viable.. People forget how cars used to be. I've owned classics with V8s since '89. Right now I have a small block C2 with a vacuum secondary that isn't opening. The car still gets squirelly going into second just on the primaries, if I want it to.

@ Yes they were considered a muscle car but at that time they were low horse power . The boss engine was designed to go in the maverick but ford pulled the plug . Grabber package was stripes and a hood scoop and mirrors but no performance added the 302 was a great engine. They were used on drag strips for years as lightweight cars .
