I still use a D4 as my main camera despite it being 10 years old. Nobody has ever looked at the images and said "could do with being higher resolution". The quest for massive MPs is pretty silly, in my view.

Yeah but that’s kinda his point. It’s not really the camera that matters, because a lot of these older less expensive cameras are still usable by today’s standards.

Old digital cameras were my way into photography fairly recently. I had always shied away from it because of the prices and thinking I needed the latest camera out to take somewhat good pictures. I’ve slowly built my way into the space and have learnt tons about cameras and photography in general and am now thinking about getting a “serious” camera to take the next step! Great video man love your channel very inspiring and informative 🤝📸✨

Made the same journey back to old images. What struck me was most of the images were 10-16mp and concidered old and obsolete today. But I didnt once wish for more megapixels when I looked at those images. So... I just sold my gfx 50r and am going back to MFT because the image quality is good enough and software has improved so much that the iso is not an issue either. Love your videos, keep it up!

Spot on about the software. I have used a couple of D700s for many years and recently picked up a D850 (now sold) just to compare. I found the D700 files would res up very easily in Lightroom to rival the D850 if I needed that much resolution, which I just really don't. Also love the smaller files from the low MP cameras. The features of modern cameras can be great if needed, but my type of photography is very deliberate and slow, so these features are of little importance to me.

Great video! I started out with photography in 2020 using a Nikon D70s (a 6MP sensor). I eventually upgraded to a D7200, but I recommend something like to D70s to anyone starting out on a budget. The thing is that my skills starting out were not good enough to take advantage of the performance of a more modern camera, but I did not (and still do not) enjoy taking photos with my phone. The older camera was perfect for me to figure out if photography was something I was interested in pursuing.

I bought a Pentax K10D recently, spares and repairs from MPB, and have been pretty impressed with the output from it. It has some quirks (broken diopter, all photos output upside down), but when I compare it against the quality of my K3iii, it compares very favorably. Less latitude for cropping, but the way it renders with that CCD sensor is very nice and pleasing. For something I bought solely for converting a lens from a broken AF motor to using screwmount AF, it's been a real surprise and joy to use. Been talking to a mate about it, who is not into photography but is curious, and I told him it's worth picking up an old Pentax and a cheap lens or two just to satisfy his curiosity.

Thanks - great thoughts! I still have my Canon EOS 6D and would never give it away. Its sensor is still so much better in low light than modern cameras (and yes, I have some very recent models). People shot magazine covers with 6 megapixel cameras. They were quite good. I had (actually, still have) a Nikon D100 and D2x and I was very happy with them. I recently backed up a bunch of old hard drives onto a new, much bigger drive, imported some into Lightroom, and I was impressed. Especially nice to be able to re-work old RAW files using present-day software with amazing de-noising, etc.

recently picked up a canon 40d (released around the same time as the 5d classic, very similar color science) and you're so right about how well older cameras respond to presets. i'm also surprised by how little editing is needed to get good results. and shocked by how good the dynamic range and low light performance is for a 17 year old camera. totally worth the $70 i payed for the body!

I know I commented on your last video on desiring a medium format system like you use now, but I’m a recent convert on the Canon 5C and it’s a phenomenal camera. The image quality and file flexibility are excellent. Off the back of that purchase I picked up the 5Dii and no regrets. The myth of Canon colours I fully understand now. The files are so nice to use and the colour and tonality are so nice. I picked up both bodies for one hundred quid each. Which is crazy when you think about it.

Great video and topic! I still have a 5DmkII as the main camera for the 'high quality' pictures, and lately added some older cameras like a Minolta from '03 or the Olympus e-p1. What i like with these two old cameras is how they render the shadows. Detail may get lost but they still don't reach full black and stay in a very natural feeling tonality, which not only does look nice straight out of camera, but also offers a nice different kind of editing the contrast later, with no full black but also no impression of a 'faded look'. Love it!

At the beginning of last year I bought a Canon Powershot G10 for around $15, because it had some fungus in the lens. The idea was to have a cheap small camera with me all the time to take some carefree snapshots, but the camera ended up being much more capable than I imagined and I shot almost exclusively with it for almost the whole year, when it sadely died. I still want to buy another one, or maybe a G11 or G12, that sacrifices a few mega pixels for a bit cleaner higher iso performance.

I wish the old CCD Nikon DSLRs were full frame, I'd still be rocking that alongside newer cameras like the D780 or Z8 - I agree that you can get almost any look with good editing skills and proper exposure, but great glass and certain sensors achieve unique things more easily. There's nothing wrong with APS-C or whatever smaller sensor but all the glass being designed for full frame, swapping them between 35mm film and FF digital bodies kinda sucks.

@@TheChosenOne_ oh I know, I’m just saying it doesn’t necessarily need to be a CCD sensor to be “film like”. The 5D classic and Fuji xpro1 are perfect examples of that-something about those early sensors are pleasant and definitely lean more towards a film look than modern day sensors. The xpro1 jpegs is very reminiscent of Fuji pro400h. I’ve had a m9 as well, that shoots more like Kodachrome because of how it pops with color. Whichever the case, can go wrong with either ccd camera :) Happy shooting!

Read through all the comments to see if anybody else was rocking the Nikon D40, but didn't spot any. I bought it new and it's currently sitting at little under 28,000 shots taken. I took it everywhere with me about 2007-2015, until camera phones started catching up for general day-to-day snaps. After the novelty of phone cameras wore off and I wanted more control, I moved straight back to film photography, so I never upgraded to a full frame digital or anything like that. The camera still works as good as new - well actually better, since the meat sack behind the camera has improved. Even though I rarely pick the D40 up nowadays, it still fits me like a glove. After 28,000 photos on one camera, I don't think I'll ever get as comfortable on any other camera in my life. I feel a bit like a carpenter with some really old manky hand tools, you better believe he's good with them.

I remember that my inner mega pixel race ended when I read that the first digital Vogue covers were taken with 12 MP cameras. Suddenly my old 450D was not that bad as I thought and a huge print in my living room tells me to this day that it's true. Around the same time I also realized that I'd need 48MP if I wanted to double the resolution and that is something that we only start to see lately on full frame and APS-C cameras. Today I think that 24MP is a good compromise between quality, disk space and workflow speed.

When I had a D100 back in 2004 I didn’t know really what I had and it was my first introduction to digital photography. Also back then the capability of photo editing software was nowhere near what it is today. I think I used photoshop elements or eventually photoshop 6.1 eventually. Now I feel like these cameras have e a new life. I got a Canon 5D Original for a trip I went on for work trip where I didn’t want to take any expensive gear. Loved the camera although the mirror eventually failed. I’d love to get back into an older H series Hasselblads but having a x1Dii it’s a bit redundant. I looked at used D100s and a lens and easily able to get one under 100$.

You're a good photographer which helps a shitload but also like Ali's editing on One Month Two Cameras' channel...modern editing, presets and the current in vogue higher exposure but slightly washed out colour look makes the old cameras photos look better (or at least modern). On Instagram many of the folks that are shooting on $20 old point and shoot digicams are doing SOOC and it's basically the new nostalgia we've seen with film previously because it looks like pics taken in the 2000s (mostly crap).

My first digital camera took photos on floppy disc, 640 x 480 pixels. That's 0.3 megapixels. It was dreadful. My next had 2MP and wasn't great, I think 5MP is the minimum which I'm still happy with. And the physical size of the sensor matters a lot, old sensors had little dynamic range, 5MP full frame is so different from 5MP 1/2". For example, the photo of houses you upsized, there's no detail on the sunny side of the white houses at all. It's the extra dynamic range I think makes modern sensors so much better rather than the extra pixels.

I compared my GFX gear before I sold it to my Sigma foveon gear, particularly something like my SD Quattro H. Obviously they're a lot different specs wise, but the idea of having to sit down and really process the image before you get the fantastic result was true for both, at least for me. My dream camera at this point is the fp L package +IBIS trimmed down to APS-C in a SD Quattro body also trimmed down for L-mount instead of SA. Make it weather sealed with a tilt screen, and you would have a crop sensor around 25-26mp that produces great results that are easy to work with and would use all the L-mount APS-C lenses Sigma has been releasing for some reason (only other APS-C bodies if you count fp L crop mode are the TL Leicas that are discontinued). As for older bodies, I still use an E-P5 today as a side body to have my wide-angle lens option on along with my main E-M5.iii with a 75mm f1.8 (150mm equiv fov). I also have my titanium E-M5.ii I got for dirt cheap years ago (200 USD for near mint was crazy...to go back to that time) to relive the E-M5.ii now that I use the E-M5.ii, E-M1.iii, G9, etc. I'd argue those 16mp MFT sensor at the end (and now with the GX85 even as a budget body) still hold up strong. I have the fp L I shoot in crop mode most of the time while working to have a compact body/lens combo to get similar reach. Lately I've been using an A7RIV that has the same type of resolution the same way, basically as the crop body Sony should be making if they weren't afraid of their non R bodies tanking in sales. In both cases, I have the flexibility of going back to full FF fov if I need to. The A7RIV is the only body these days I recommend to people that want to be enthusiast or higher into wildlife because you can still use the zooms that are great and get the effective fov/reach of the much more expensive options while still having a ton of resolution to play with at the 25-26mp (or 30, 40, 16, whatever you crop to and still have a great image). Some of my favorite things to do is go to image sample sites and look at old bodies and what people do with them. It's a dangerous rabbit hole, though; I've ended up with a Sony A-mount system after doing that (I have a compatible Minolta collection of lenses, at least...).

This is extremely true. My 10-12+ year old 12-30 megapixel full frame nikons still look great today. the only reason I upgraded was to double print sizes up to 50"+. Anything up to 24" across or even 30" 99% of people wouldn't be able to perceive a resolution difference in a physical print. Those older cameras now sell for pennies on the dollar. I was recently licensing out some old D700 images and 12 megapixels was plenty for most applications. Now with 100+ megapixels you can make bigger prints (without losing detail up close) but most users rarely if ever do that.

It's substantially smaller than the second generation, and with the Rokinon/Samyang 35mm f2.8 it's only 50 grams heavier than the Fuji X100VI, just slightly taller and thicker because of the viewfinder bump/lens. The files this thing puts out are insane, and it also works great with the classic lab presets. I recently got a GFX 50s MKII to be able to play with the medium format look, but I still take the A7R with me when I want something light and small to fit in a jacket pocket and I don't feel like I sacrifice image quality in a huge way. My only complaint is that even with a new battery I bought a year ago from Sony, it goes down to 0% rapidly in cold weather.

People get obsessed with MP and having the most, you really don't need a lot of MP unless you doing like huge prints or cropping a lot. Phones are how most people view content these days and Instagram is 1080 x 1080 which is like 3mp. 16mb is grand for most people.

agreed. my last "new" camera was and still is a Fuji XT2 and Xpro2. and although I feel the urge to "upgrade" these cameras are still very capable and serve me well. Im old enough to remember when technological advances were made in film and film stock, TMax 3200 was a biggie in its day. Back then you bought a camera like a F3 or OM1 and it could be years before the Nikon or Olympus would introduce a new model. At Ryerson the Pentax K1000 was a bomb proof camera used and abused by legions of students year after year and I betcha that the Pentax's are still solid performers. But still regardless of performance and reliability of older digital platforms, we as photographers are driven to acquire the latest and greatest technologies but until your craft is mastered that will only give you high res ambiguity and mega mediocrity. Having said that, I do want a MF Fuji, I admit that (secretly) :) as always wishing you all the best from Western Canada.

I've a Nikon D700 and I don't feel any need to move to anything else. It has the biggest pixels ever on a sensor and this makes a difference, specially when enlarging images and printing them big. Also, I feel its images are very close to film, specially when enlarged. Kinda digital with an organic mood :) And it's not overprocessed as today's cameras. Like modern lenses, that killed micro contrast in the name of apparent sharpness. Don't like those. Take a look at one D700 someday, if you can.

Same here! 250 Canadian with a lot on the shutter. I just listed the 5D original for sale, but I'm quite tempted to pull it back down.. it's still a solid camera and it's harder to fully resolve even that sensor completely sharp in real world photography than you'd think. My first camera was a Pentax 10mp CCD k200d with manual focus lenses. Was going to pick up a second hand mirrorless, finally, but it's not too replace, moreso to complement and try it out.. I'd rather stick to each system's stock lenses and not adapt. Just stick with the kit 24-70 f4 lens on the z6 which is fantastic, and keep my nice EF lenses on the 5D's..

Old digital cameras are the new film cameras. personally, I get more pleasure shooting and processing photos from a 22 year old 4mp Canon 1D than my Panasonic S1r... what i lose in term of resolution, AF, low light capabilities etc... i gain in smaller files that need little post processing, a look and colors that no current modern camera can duplicate, the satisfaction of being much more involved in the picture making process and a body that was build to last decades... and more importantly, less frustration when operating the thing... oh and i forgot: 1/16,0000th mechanical shutter

That R-D1, man. That camera is just not fair! It shouldn’t be that awesome, but it _is_ 🥲 Saying something positive about an "older" Sony camera doesn’t count though because everyone knows their colors are supposed to be bad! All jokes aside, I didn’t realize some of the photos in An American Mile were actually digital. Maybe someone with a more trained eye could tell, but I certainly never noticed the difference.

Hey Kyle! Thank you for another interesting video. I have long wanted an Epson RD1, but I can't make myself pull the trigger. I love the idea of a much more manual feeling digital camera and a rangefinder which is pretty uncommon on modern digital cameras. You said you no longer have that camera, so what made you sell it/give it away? Is it worth spending $2000 for a 20 year old sensor for the unique shooting experience? Thanks for your thoughts!

By this point, it seems like there is a whole army of KZbinrs praising old cameras. If you think about it, it makes sense. It's very easy to create content around some old thing. But honestly, I don't like it. Over the past couple of years, the authors might have felt that this path had become worn out, but they continue to do it. Moreover, these KZbinrs create exclusively positive content. I haven't seen a video yet of someone saying "this is junk, don't buy this, you'll be constantly fighting against this camera" - but this is what the experience feels like with many cameras over 15 years old. Anyone who has worked with these cameras, who has tried to get the most out of them, knows that they now cost $50-100 for a reason. And I don’t understand why you are talking about the flexibility of old cameras and show a previews ? And besides, not even on full screen, so we see a resize of about 1-1.5 megapixels on our screens. Well yes, it will work that way, but what's the point ? Of course old cameras can make pictures for web and small prints, has anyone argued with this ? But if you try to upload these files to the stock after all the manipulations as is, without downsizing, they will be rejected. Because at 100% it's a mess. I remember back then we were trying to expose with a plus correction, balancing between giving more light to the shadows but not burning out the highlights. We studied these early noise reduction techniques, installed some poorly working plugins, we devoted so much effort to somehow maintaining the quality. And now you tell me “these cameras were flexible.”
