SATO's SEMI-DIESEL ENGINE (Hot bulb engine)
2hp
Around 1933
Manufacturer : SATO Company
Manufacturer's Location : Higashiizumocho, Matsue-shi, Shimane, Japan
This is a hot-bulb engine-type engine made at pre World War II. Because a magneto was unnecessary as for the semidiesel engine, it was made in some Japanese makers at the time. This engine burns a charcoal fire on the cylinder head, and heats hot bulb.
This Engine is not my thing. I observed this engine at 2012 SUISHO-no-YU Spa engine show.

Great for a change to see the Japanese people being proud of and preserving their engineering past, as well as continually raising the bar globally with some of the incredible machines they're designing and constructing nowadays!

In my guess, in 1930s, the above engine was very essential to Japan farmers. For example : operation rice threshing machine, pumping the water from lake or reservoir

Can't speak Japanese but can speak Anoraksia- understood every word they said! It really is globalthen- give a man steel toe caps, overalls and red hermetite and point him towards something ferrous lurking half buried under a clump of brambles. Your garden will get cleared in no time. But where is the woman with the teapot?? Ah, she must be holding the camera.

The Red Wing engine manufacturer in Red Wing Minnesota produced what the called a "Spark Diesel" in several H.P. models, the smallest was 45hp for harbor tuglets and small duties. Time period in late 30,s I think . I actually saw advertisements in the boating mags. gasoline was 12 to 15 cents a gal. Diesel at 6 cents.

+regaskin I was wondering how it was started before the use of an electric motor, thanks for answering my question. I can imagine that these engines were used for everything from pumping water to running a small generator, great to see it preserved and running, I would have no idea how to start it but I'm glad that these people do and that they made this video to show others how to.

@@dannz2603 I've got a Wisconsin TJD from 1990 that had a starting crank handle. It is insanely easy to start, thanks to the engineering prowess of Fairbanks-Morse and their spring loaded magnetos... Such a shame they don't make them anymore. I'd gladly take a hand crank to start car than one with a radio.

+Poly Bun I see what you mean. Ok yes I will check out other engines, fascinating how they work. Have a really good day.
@scheusselmensch5713
@scheusselmensch5713 8 жыл бұрын
+Poly Bun This is not quite right. A person could claim that an Otto cycle engine is a compression ignition engine, because they certainly won't run without compression. The hot bulb engine isn't diesel in the slightest, and it is not surface ignition either. Fuel is introduced far closer to bottom dead centre than any diesel could tolerate. That vapourized fuel is heated in the hot bulb as the piston rises pushing a charge of fresh air into the hot bulb chamber. when sufficient oxygen is available, combustion takes place. This happens at a point that requires the engine run at quite low speed, typically 400 rpm or so in larger examples.
