Manufacturer's Location : Higashiizumocho, Matsue-shi, Shimane, Japan
This is a hot-bulb engine-type engine made at pre World War II. Because a magneto was unnecessary as for the semidiesel engine, it was made in some Japanese makers at the time. This engine burns a charcoal fire on the cylinder head, and heats hot bulb.
This Engine is not my thing. I observed this engine at 2012 Chikusei city Oguri Hogan Festival engine show.

Until seeing this I had no idea the Japanese ever used anything like this. Or that any of them survived the war, to be collected by enthusiasts (I thought Japan was the home of the 30,000-mile engine changeout and the original smog nazis.) This has been an eye-opening, enlightening experience. Thanks.

An engine can break within 30,000 or 3,000,000 miles depending on the price Even the Chinese makes pretty durable engines, but the durable ones ain't cheap. This is the same case with japanese manufacturers You have Sony making high quality Trinitron TVs that can last decades, and then there is Funai electric making garbage TVs that'll break within a couple of years.

@@tristan6509 I was referring to their extreme emissions regulations. So strict that they replace engines after 30,000 miles not due to wear failure, but failure to pass Japanese emissions testing. Japanese engines if properly maintained will last a quarter-million miles or more...

That Sato is pretty smokey. Probably pure vegetable oil with no elements chemically removed. So the fuel will gell up pretty quick.

That is not semi diesel,it is hot bulb engine. A semidiesel has injection pump and variable injection nozzle. At low rpm and load the fuel is injected into the hot bulb. On medium rpm and load the nozzel is adjusted so it spray down at piston and running like a low compression diesel engine .

Given what I'm seeing here I wonder if a horizontal hot bulb engine such as on a vintage Lanz Bulldog Tractor could be started with a charcoal chimney starter instead of a kerosene blowtorch which is usually used. Just wondering.

Most of old engines in Japan are traded in the Japanese internet auction and personal trading. I think that those trading are difficult if you can't use Japanese. And, those trading are not intended to export.
