I'm so excited to share the menus from this old cookbook made up of a compilation of recipes from a newspaper that printed them every week in 1955.

I’m in NC. Dinner was lunch and supper was our evening meal. I actually never heard the word lunch until I started public school

Fellow cookbook reading weirdo here! 😁There are cookbooks I use for feeding my family, and then there are cookbooks I use for pleasure reading. So few people understand! I love how much old cookbooks focused on nutrition first, economy second, and taste last. They were eating to live, not living to eat, and, while I enjoy good tasting food (no stewed prunes, please 😂), there's some wisdom to glean from that. As for lunch/dinner/supper, my husband comes from a long line of Southern farmers. It was always breakfast, dinner (biggest meal of the day), and supper. Lunch/ luncheon was a special social event, usually for the church ladies. My family lived in town and worked more industrial jobs, so it was breakfast, lunch, supper. A dinner was a more formal event, like Christmas dinner. We now use breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Yes! Cookbooks for pleasure reading is a thing! (Have you seen any of Susan Branch's cookbooks?!)

Fellow cookbook lover here! Our idea of supper verses dinner came from farming relatives. Dinner is the biggest meal of the day served around noon and supper is the evening, smaller meal. I call our noon meal lunch so I can serve sandwiches or leftovers 😆

That's pretty much what I've gathered. I came from a farming family, but it was lunch and supper - there was no dinner. Except Sunday Dinner!

I vaguely remember seeing a cookbook with meal ideas like that, but I can't remember if it belonged to my mom or grandmother. Both have passed on and I treasure the handwritten recipes and comments in some of their cookbooks that I have.

Hi I am a U.K viewer & where I live we call the evening meal "tea". Supper would be a snack later in the evening before bed.

Thank you for chiming in! I'd love to know more! Do you eat breakfast and lunch at typical times? And what would you normally have for "supper?" So curious!

My grandma on the farm made Perfection salad. Yuck! It was a flavored gelatin with all kinds of shredded veggies in it. They poured it into a bell shaped or decorative mold. It looked very pretty but I don't think veggies belong in jello!😝

Ha! I figured it was something gelatinous. So weird that that was a thing!

Yup. Shredded raw cabbage, carrots, and celery in lemon Jello. Sometimes raisins. Sometimes topped with mayonnaise or Miracle Whip. 🤢

@@AmyRaisingArrows it was supposed to be a good way to get kids to eat their vegetables. 😂 I see it as proof of the psychological damage caused by the Great Depression.
