Im a Tequila guy, but last month I started to get this unshakeable curiosity with Whisk(e)y. Stumbled across your guys' channel recently and opened my eyes to the world of whiskey outside of taking shots. So I brought a bottle of bullet bourbon, which I have begun to enjoy, up to my family's cabin for opener of fishing and bs'd with some family friends and then passed one around for a friend who had passed away recently. We are unable to celebrate her life and mourn her passing properly with the covid-19 situation and felt this was a good way to share both of my recent experiences with some people who may be going through a similar ordeal. Let's all take a moment to pour one out for the loved ones no longer with us, and raise one to the ones still staying strong. Be safe everyone.

I want to offer a suggestion. Something I've always wanted to see done. You know how maker's 46 puts different staves in their barrels to bring out flavors? I want to see a bourbon with black walnut planks thrown in the barrel. When sanding black walnut for knife handles, the smell is beautiful. I am confident it would meld fantastically with the brown sugar/cherry notes in classic bourbon. Black walnut planks could be slightly charred to bring out the oils.

It seems that even when proof is close single barrel whiskey seems to be much more dramatic in flavour. Is there something that happens in the blending process that waters down flavour? Possible more barrels that have had less impact on the whiskey some how mixed on to a few "sweet spot " barrels?

Here's an interesting question. I know a lot of companies source whiskey and then have it finish in some barrels of their choice. But are their common/popular brands that source new-make and then age it in barrels of their choice to make it legal whiskey? Sounds like a interesting concept.

Virginia recently allowed online purchases of whisky due to COVID-19 and the state-wide shutdown. I took advantage of the opportunity to try some of the local Virginia distilleries offerings which I would not otherwise be able to visit. I picked up 2 bottles of Highland Whisky from Virginia Distillery, and a bottle of Bare Knuckle Rye from KO Distillery (Manassas). All were very good, and it was nice to be able to support local distillers during these rough economic times. Check out some of your local distillers and lend them some support!

I've had one bottle of the Old Forrester Single Barrel. It was picked by someone at the OLCC so it just said "Oregon" on the label where the store name usually goes. The guy who worked at the store told me it was a new program where OF sent barrels to each state for aging and that this one was aged in Oregon. I thought to myself that would be amazing if it were true, but suspected it wasn't. Whoever picked that barrel likes oakey flavors because I liked it less than the standard OF86. Glad the vault got a better pick.

I have an idea for dry week. Pick a cheap whiskey that you enjoy, something like EW BIB maybe, and pour a whiskey each day of dry week, but don't drink it. Cover it with plastic wrap or some sort of lid that isn't quite air tight, then at the end of dry week, taste each days pour in reverse order to see what each day of sitting out does to each pour. If that amount of time sitting out seems a bit extreme, try doing this each hour over the last hours of the last day of dry week. Just a thought.

To the person who asked about mail order spirits. I want to say something about Flaviar. They have a really cool club with a great selection. The bottles on their site that I see locally are somewhat over priced so I assume they all are a bit overpriced (probably because they are drop shipping). However, they have so many bottles I just can't get locally that it's okay if they are within 10-20%. The problem I had with them that caused me to quit was because of shipping. I live out in the country and work all over the state. It was incredibly difficult to be home to receive the packages. They recommend shipping to your job, but having alcohol delivered to my company home office is a great way to get fired. One of their shippers, GSO, only has one pick up location, which is a 5 hour round trip for me. Even FedEx pick up locations mean over an hour. I *am not* trying to shit on Flaviar, but if you are not in a major city with easy pick up or you can't be home all the time, just know that dealing with them could be a giant pain in the ass.

You can ship alcohol through places like UPS and Fedex. It's not that difficult. It's just required that the recipient sign for it. They won't leave it on the porch.

What I was more referring to is what are the logistics & legality of a distillery selling & shipping to a customer in a state like mine that has state run stores. Heh Don't need the "Dry Week" I do that on my own anyway. I drink by mood...I've swung from having a couple drinks every night, for a couple months, then not touch a drop for a couple months. Or have a drink once or twice a week, to not even looking at a bottle of whiskey, or beer, or whatever for almost a year. Or I could go play darts or pool or poker with my buddies and just get wrecked...It all depends on my mood (right now I have a 6pack I bought saturday before last, and still have two left. (btw...I love to drink, love the taste o, in order, tequila, then whiskey, then beer...just never became one of the daily routine kinda guys) I also smoke, and do the same with my cigarettes, I've had times where I'd smoke a pack a week...(more if drinking, of course, lol)...or put my pack on coffee table, and not touch it for one or two months(then have to throw it away because it's so stale) I'm normally a pack every couple weeks kinda guy(unless stressing about something)... I started smoking, regularly, when I was around 16yrs old (40 years ago)...could probably say the same about drinking :-D

@@joederue9900 I feel like it would be pretty hard vs pairing a cigar with whiskey. Pipe flavors are much more "delicate" I would say vs the big robust flavors of a cigar. Maybe something a little lighter and delicate like Belvenie 12yr could pair well with a VA. I'm not a scotch guy but maybe a lighter, smokey scotch with an english/balkan blend could work as well.
