I'm new to the Bourbon game and have just tried Old Forester 1910. OMG! I thought I was drinking candy at first. It's incredible.

I've always been a Maker's fan, but recently, Old Forester has been catching my attention. I like the 1910 the best of the Whiskey Row series.

Old Forester became a favorite of mine after seeing it for $12 at Target on sale. They were trying to get rid of it. So I picked up 2 bottles and was glad I did. Fast forward a year and a half forward to now, and I noticed some of the pricing went up for Old Forester here and it's harder to find because it has become rather popular in my area. Of course, at $35 for a 1.75 ltr a lot of people see it as that "Cheap" bourbon too.

Just got a bottle of this for Christmas '19. And it was great to try it with your review- found all of the candy cherry and brown sugar, and the wood ending. But one additional note- when I went back to the glass, I got a LOT of the burnt wood from the alcohol evaporating off the side. Smells like wood working with dull blades. also- it's fun to use different glasses. One Glencaren, one Norlan. The difference just changes the volume of some of the flavors. Well, except for the wood coming from the evaporated whiskey.

I really got addicted to watching your videos guys! Even as a more advanced whisky drinker, I am still learning tons of new things! I have a question however: Do you ever get bored by a type of whisky? - I recently did a bourbon tasting with friends. We sampled ten different ones, some were great, others not so much. Yet, after the last one, we really were happy to enjoy a sip of peated single malt for a change, because all the similar notes in the bourbons got really tiring...

Ouch Talisker... My first sip of that felt like licking an ashtray. But now that the bottle was allowed to breathe a bit, I get a little hint of caramel there and a lot of smoked bacon. Love it

Things have been busy, so I haven't been doing my daily watching for the last few weeks. Finally getting caught up, but just listening while I work instead of watching. Tuned in for some actual video and noticed the lovely bottles sitting on the window sill by the driftwood ;-) Had to go back and see how long they've actually been there. I know they aren't whisky, but I hope someone gets a chance to enjoy them a bit.

I really enjoy oak-y tannic notes in bourbon. Wanting to pick that up soon. But to be honest I've been buying way too much bourbon lately. Picked up eagle rare 10 and weller 12 recently not so much cause I wanted them but because they're hard to find and I found them. (No complaints, I've been enjoying the crap out of them and making good memories around those bottles)

Hey guys just got into watching your channel, because of another channel, either way don't have a question just a fellow whisk/e/y enjoyer, cheers!
@kevinw3964 Жыл бұрын
When I 1st opened this bottle I found it to be very tannic. It left my tongue feeling dry with a burnt/char taste that I didn't care for, but over time, it seems to have opened up and mellowed out. It actually makes a nice Manhattan as the dry finish cuts the sweetness of the vermouth.

@jskypercussion4 жыл бұрын
Can you honestly explain to me why you like the 1920. I went through a whole bottle and was not impressed. I am comparing it to four Rose's small batch and single barrel and woodford Reserve double Oaked. I want to hear your opinion. I get the ginger snap finish. But everything else does not floor me. Am I missing something? Should I try the 1910? Please help. I am willing to listen.
@IndyGuy654 жыл бұрын
@@jskypercussion I believe it comes down to palate. When I drink OF 1920 I taste chocolate, cherry and brown sugar. I too have tried 4 Roses small batch and thought meh! Its not bad I just did not get the flavors others who love 4 roses get. I say drink what you like and enjoy. Cheers
@jskypercussion4 жыл бұрын
@@IndyGuy65 Thanks for the response. Do you think it is possible I got a bad or off bottle?
@IndyGuy654 жыл бұрын
It is possible that you got a bad bottle. That happened to me with a store pick bottle of Buffalo Trace. It was just flat and blah. I do like the 1910 but as I said 1920 is my favorite. Maybe try a drink at a bar or restaurant before getting another bottle. Cheers.
@jskypercussion4 жыл бұрын
@@IndyGuy65 I will do that. Thanks. Because it does seem flat to me. I know everyone's pallet is different, but usually there are certain distinct things that the majority of the whiskey community can pick up on with notes and flavors. And that is why I was shocked I was not getting the standard notes that most people get from the 1920.

I've told this story before, but Talisker was my first Scotch, foisted upon me without warning by a friend who picked up the first round at a bar with a wide selection of whiskies (Trestle Inn in Philadelphia). It made my eyes spin around like a slot machine, but I couldn't stop thinking about it for days, and eventually it became a favorite. It might be jarring, but if someone is looking to transition into Scotch and you want to show them just what kind of variety the field is capable of, it's a fine pick
@BrandonColonel5 жыл бұрын
What would you recommend for someone to try if they want to taste the oak flavor and know that's what it is? For instance, when I wanted to know what peat tasted like, I tried Laphroaig. Now I can identify it in any whisky I buy. Is there any whisky like that for oak?
@jonstothfang38005 жыл бұрын
Also, my dad wasn't much of a drinker at all, but old relatives kept giving him bottles anyway. He graciously accepted them and left them in the liquor cabinet in case anyone else came over and wanted some. This included multiple bottles of Old Forester, which later became mine once I started drinking. So now I have a supply of dusty classic Old Forester bottles whenever I go back home for the holidays. Are any of these of interest to collectors?
@jamescaldwell96085 жыл бұрын

@GeordieSmithy5 жыл бұрын
My dad passed this year in May, I was a Bourbon drinker. We toasted him at his wake with Johnnie Walker Red, which was his preferred drink before his ill health stopped him drinking whisky. I went from JW Red straight to Lagavulin 16 and Laphroaig Quarter Cask. Love them. I’ve expanded my collection now but the majority are Wine Finished whisky. My favourite of those I have tried is Glenfarclas 105. I do like all of those I’ve tried except some of the budget, bells and Famous Grouse are quite so good.
@larrywagner14325 жыл бұрын
So I’ve seen you both do it recently, but what is the rationale behind placing the whiskey on your hands and smelling it that way? Something with the mix of your own scent and the whiskey? Thanks!
@williamcornelison4721 Жыл бұрын
Well, I won at the Horse Races in Hot Springs Ark. this last weekend. (not that I knew how to bet) I bet about forty dollars, but picked three horses to win for $10.00 each and beginners luck struck.... I WON.... I also won with my cousin's Woodford Double Oak (my first tasting) and my cousin really liked my Old Forester 1910. I didn't locate the Old forester Rye while I as there. Ran out of time to look.

Question for you scotch folks. Is there a way to have a smoky whisky without the iodine and bandaid flavor that I get from peat. I remember trying Lagavulin 16 for the first time and loved the initial ashy smoky flavor, but then the iodine and rubber kicked in and I couldn't scrub it out of my mouth fast enough. I wanted to shave my tongue, but I knew that it would require more iodine and bandaids from the first aid that would follow. I would love to find out if there were a truly smoky bourbon or other whisky without the punishment of the iodine. Thoughts?
@taylor3152 жыл бұрын
Personally I don’t know how much smokier it gets than the 1910 and Woodford reserve Double Oaked, but Talisker 10 is another scotch that is similar to the Lagavulin but that peat flavor is just turned down a notch

So I'm 21 and don't drink whiskey, but I find myself constantly watching the channel because I want to love whiskey. I've tried a small variety of bourbon s, but never really enjoy any of them from monkey shoulder to eagle's rare. I tend to like sweeter whiskey's, but the channel rarely addresses any of those types of whiskeys. Is there any suggestions you have for something to try? Please help!
Don't waste your time chasing fads and trying to be cool. If you don't like whiskey than don't drink it. There are plenty of other vices to spend your money on. With that out of the way, look for whiskey finished in port barrels, pedro ximenez barrels, or rum barrels. Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban is a scotch finished in port barrels; very dessert like. Teeling Small Batch is finished in rum barrels; a very good and not too expensive Irish blended whiskey. A number of scotches are released in pedro ximenez (or simply 'PX') casks, though they are usually more expensive. Angel's Envy bourbon is finished in port barrels; again rather expensive though. And don't forget that whiskey is but a fraction of the liquor world. Many good sweet rums, brandy, and liqueurs out there. Even a few sweet tequilas.
