I don't know if the formula is the same since new owners took over the brand, but SLICK 50 used to work like magic to improve an engine. My 1971 Ford F-100 302 V-8 lasted well over 150000 miles without any major work before I sold it away, and I blame it on Slick 50. One time at about 80000 miles I gave it a PERFECT tune-up and oil change, minus one quart. It was all warmed up and PURRRRRRRRRING sweetly. I poured in one quart of Slick 50 and within thirty seconds that Purrrr became a quiet HUMMMMMMMMMMMM! It was incredible, but that really happened! From then on I used Slick 50 once a year, and drove it without engine problems ever again, for twenty more years.............................elsullo

I'll probably get hammered for this, but on my Silverado 2500 with a 5.7L I'll dump a quart of ATF in the tank on a fill up before an extended road trip, I'll do this once at least every year or two. My last trip from Tucson to Phoenix, when I pulled into my driveway, my fuel pump was screaming like a banshee. Changed my fuel filter and she quieted back down because that filter was darn near clogged. Truck has 208,000 miles and passes emissions every year with flying colors and this is a tailpipe check and not an OBD plugin. I swear by ATF as a decent fuel system cleaner, but use it on a full tank and then drive it hard.

ATF is super detergent but has fire retardant ( used to be PBB) in it. Techron is a brand name, most any detergent additive works. But GM does not recommend any additives except Techron. P.S. I have a 1998 GM. Yukon w/ 328,000 miles on the 5.7 Vortec last of the cast iron 350's. All original except just last year 2023 the temp sender for computer quit. Mobil 1 every 10,000. Something will probably screw up now that I bragged about it. I do wonder about the timing chain & sprockets. ben/ michigan

I agree with you. Preventative maintenance is the key. The only bottle stuff I have used that did what it said was Slick 50. I used it because it left a coat of oil or whatever on the engine so on first startup in the morning, the engine didn't start dry. It worked great on my wife's Ford that always left a little puff of blue on first start. Once I used it, no more puff. Thanks for the tip.

Hey Ken, I'm pretty much a Shade Tree mechanic. Been using Techtron for years. What sold me was when I was diagnosing a 92 chevy 4.3 with a rough idle issue. I was using the Old Snap On "Brick" at the time. The Brick suggested using Techtron. A Tankfull later and problem solved! The ATF trick I discovered as a kid. Dad said check the oil on our 73 Impala (454). I deceided that it could use a quart so I grabbed the 1st can, put the sput in and as I was filling, I noticed that the can was striped (old Quaker State). I thought I goofed, but my friends Dad said no problem, it'll just clean it out! One more thing, ATF and Acetone, 50/50= homemade PB Blaster! Thanks for your posts, I'm still learning!!

Gasoline is a compound of multiple chemicals, each having a different volatility. New cars have closed fuel systems that catch the evaporated components, reliquefy them and return them to the tank. In older cars, that stuff is lost to the atmosphere.

I love Techron fuel system cleaner.. I use it a lot on my gas vehicles which consist of 4 cylinder cars from hyundai and mazda.. these have 12 gallon tanks usually so when one get down to like 1/4 tank I put one full bottle in and drive it like it stole it for 30 mins or so.. hard acceleration, keeping in lower gear to keep RPM up etc.. usually this was one of the kids cars so I told them what was going on and said when you need to drive the car a bit hard, when it gets down to E fill tank and put the other bottle of cleaner in an drive normal.. even the daughters noticed a better driving running car.. so yeah it the deal..

Yes,I found out that the lifter free additives were only a temporary fix for bad hydraulic lifters in my car although even a Ford mechanic unstuck the piston rings in a 1.5 litre Ecoboost engine in a Ford Escape with Rislone engine flush. Yes, in Australia you can't bolt a 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine into a Series 1 model VT Commodore which ran the 5 litre Holden V8 engine unless the parts from a series 2 VT onwards Commodore which ran that engine is fitted, like the front K frame, fuel pump, wiring loom,PCM, transmission,fuel pump sending unit, etc,etc. It's like the Holden VL Commodore was basically a homologated VK Commodore which ran the Nissan RB30E engine which was from the R31 Skyline in Australia, the Jatco E4N71B 4 speed automatic transmission won't fit into the transmission tunnel in the VK Commodore since it's a bigger unit, even the VK Commodore tunnel will need modifications done to it. So the Jatco E4N71B 4 speed automatic transmission won't fit where the Tri Matic (3L30) transmission or the M21 4 speed manual transmission lives although the Nissan MF5 5 speed manual might fit without modifying the transmission tunnel !

But this year I've changed out everything in the tank, fuel pump, pressure regulator, filter, sending unit, wiring harness, all hoses and the check valve at the bottom of the tank that releases fuel to the injectors. I also changed all the oils, changed the spark plug and it still isn't starting. Do you think this that techron product would be a good idea? I'm still troubleshooting but at this point, I'm not sure if it's time to pull the injectors. I'm going to check for a spark also but I think that's OK. Just fill up at a Chevron station. The additives are in the fuel.
@StringerNews1
@StringerNews1 24 күн бұрын
A not-well-kept secret of the gasoline retail industry is that the gas that every station in a given area gets comes from the same refinery. So no matter the brand of the station, the gas will have the very same basic package of additives as the most expensive brand. 50 years ago, some stations (Sunoco) added more things at the pump, but that's no longer economically feasible. Just buy the cheapest gas. If you need more than the base package, you could spend 20% extra for premium gas (which has more additives), or buy a bottle of gas treatment.
@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA 24 күн бұрын
@@StringerNews1 Yes true, the tanker that comes to fill up is owned by the refinery, or a contractor that does deliveries, so all the stations on the route get exactly the same fuel, as there is generally only 3 internal tanks in the trailer, with each having the possibility to hold a different fuel, but all have a gate valve at the bottom of the tank, that leads to a common manifold and a meter, so that when filling the customer (the fuel station) is billed for the volume of fuel. Might be filled all with one grade of fuel, or a different one in each tank, but the area filling stations all get the same fuel delivered to them. By me that would be either 95 unleaded fuel, or regular diesel, or low sulphur diesel. Some tankers have 5 tanks, so also will have a small tank that is used for illuminating paraffin, which is often illegally blended with diesel as it is cheaper, as a lot of filling stations also sell it as a heating and cooking fuel, alongside LPG.
@StringerNews1
@StringerNews1 24 күн бұрын
@@SeanBZA where I live, we have a similar issue with Diesel for farm use, that has no road tax charged, and Diesel for road vehicles. I didn't go into the differences between fuel grades, but with gasoline it's primarily the octane rating, the resistance to pinging. When we had leaded fuel, it was just a matter of adding more tetraethyl lead; the base fuel stock was otherwise the same. Nowadays TEL is banned, and MTBE, MMT etc. can't control octane by itself. So different fuel grades are blended differently as well. Of course each grade / type of fuel gets a separate container for trucking it. I can only imagine how difficult it is to send it in batches over a single pipeline! Since refineries are typically owned by the same oil companies that drill and sell the final products at retail, it would only follow that they could also sell their additive package as a retail product. I guess it doesn't hurt to add more additives, but IMO the best practice is to remember that gasoline is meant to be consumed while it's fresh.
@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA 24 күн бұрын
@@StringerNews1 Pipelines it is easy, you have an inline density meter, that is measuring the density of the fluid. You change at the sending end, and the receiver simply waits till the density starts to change, and switches tanks. A few thousand litres of different fuel in a 100kl tank is barely going to be noticed at all. Refineries are owned by a oil company, but sell to all in the area irrespective of brand, and the base fuel they supply is the same. No fuel station puts in additives any more, just sells the same base stock in different grades only. They will sell it retail, as that way is a lot more profit, for what is basically a blend of paint thinner, turps substitute and some extra solvent, with a dye to colour it, in a fancy bottle.

In the place where the oil goes, right? I love learning about cars. Im a slow learner. You advocate changing your oil often also. I get my oil changed with synthetic oil every 5,000 miles. I believe thats right. The last time they changed the cabin filter too. The car had 22,000 miles on it. The cabin filter was very dirty. It cost an extra $27 for that.

It's a Kia/Hudai, a new set of injectors is about a $100 bucks. That Tecron is good stuff and should be used every 20K miles as an SOP maintenance. What's that thing on the trunk of the Camaro with a coil cord, a CB radio?

I didn't see a benefit to adding fuel treatment. Change your fuel filter if you have an external filter that's a must. The only time I clean my fuel system is when I have a noticeable drivability issue like surging a lean condition a rough condition etc. I use an OTC fuel injection cleaning system with OTC fuel injection cleaner. Does the trick every time. A good top end cleaner for carbon build up and a throttle body cleaning and your good ass new.

GM has a TSB with Chevron with Techron listed as a fix for those older Chevy's with the spider injection.

@charleswhite5856 21 күн бұрын
I'm 75 years old and "back in the day" when this TSB existed the procedure was to start with a 1/2 tank of gas in the vehicle, add the Techron in the tank, and then let it run for 1/2 hour and it usually straightened out the problem.

I have found Techtron to be the only fuel system cleaner that isn't snake oil. It works. I always get 400,000 miles at least out of a vehicle and never had an engine failure, because I always put 1/4 cup of transmission fluid in my oil the day I am going to change it. I drive it hard at highway speeds, then as soon as I get home, drain the oil. All the parafin that is in pertoleum oil will drain out, I don't and will never use synthetic. The inside of my engines look like brand new. No sludge at all.
